I like multipurpose products because they are cost effective and save space too. When you have one product, which can do the work of two products, then why would you buy two? You could just go for a multipurpose product, right? But, one thing that I have noticed with multipurpose products is that all parts of the product may not be equally good. So, you might as well go in for individual pieces that work well.
But, why am I talking so much about multipurpose products today? You guessed it right. Today’s review is on a multipurpose or to be more specific, a dual purpose kajal pencil by Essence. This eyeliner pencil has two shades, one on either end. So, are both the ends great? Read on to find out.
Two-tone look, the 2-in-1 kajal offers plenty of room for creative eye make-up styles thanks to the two perfectly aligned colors. Available in 7-8 combination pencils.

My Experience with Essence Free and Style 2 In 1 Kajal Pencil:
Starting with the packaging, Essence Free and Style 2 In 1 Kajal Pencil comes in the form of a sleek, double sided wooden pencil with a colour coded body, which allows you to easily identify the colours of the two kajal pencils. The caps are also colour coded and fits the pencil well, thus making this product travel friendly. The brand name and product name is written across the pencil. The main USP of this product is that it offers you the benefit of two kajals in one pencil.
The two colours, “Style” is of color brown with fine glitter particles and “Free” is of color grey with fine glitter particles. They are perfect for everyday use. Luckily, the fine glitter particles are hardly visible and are not over the top, which makes it suitable for everyday wear. Of the two colours, I liked “Style” better, as it has a brownish tinge to it and shows up on my lids. “Free” is not totally bad, but it is greyish in colour and it does not show up well on my eyelids.
Coming to the formula of this kajal pencil, it is quite creamy and tends to crumble when applied. Hence, you need to refrigerate the product well before use. The staying power of both these colours differs. “Style” stays for about 7 to 8 hours on my eyelids without smudging, fading or feathering. However, “Free” hardly stays on my eyelids for about 3 to 4 hours. Further, it begins to fade after about an hour of application.
Both the colours are easy to apply and there is only a slight tugging, due to the creamy nature of these pencils. I tried using this pencil on my waterline too and there was no irritation. Hence, both the colours are suitable for waterline application too.
This eyeliner can be easily removed with water. But for it to completely go away, you need to use an eye makeup remover. Hence, this 2 in 1 kajal pencil is water resistant, but not water proof.
Pros of Essence Free and Style 2 In 1 Kajal Pencil:
- Affordable and travel-friendly product.
- Suitable for daily wear.
- “Style” has a good staying power.
- Cruelty-free product.
Cons of Essence Free and Style 2 In 1 Kajal Pencil:
- Sharpening leads to wastage of product.
- Cannot be used during the monsoons as it is not water proof.
- Creamy formula makes it difficult to apply precise lines.
- “Free” has poor staying power and is poorly pigmented.
3/5 (2 for Style and 1 for Free)
