Last week, while browsing, I got to know about the Essence gel pencils and how they have got this Best of Beauty 2014 award. I knew I had to try these when I saw them online! Essence has come out with 6 shades and I’ll be reviewing 4 of them.
About Essence Gel Eye Pencil:
The latest trend from Asia: gel eyeliner in a pen-shape. Instead of in a tub, the soft, waterproof and long-lasting texture of the gel eye pencil waterproof comes in a retractable pen. Velvety and highly-pigmented, these pens offer intensive eyeliner styles.
Shades: Black Blaze, Around Midnight, Urban Jungle, Blue Lagoon, Gunmetal, and Cocoa Bean
Quantity: 0.57 g
My take on Essence Gel Eye Pencil Waterproof in Cocoa Bean:
I am not an eye pencil person. Although I love everything about an eye pencil, my usually oily eyelids don’t give me the freedom to use one. So apart from Zoeva (in Blue lotus), I don’t use any other when it comes to eye pencils. When I saw the gel pencils by Essence, I thought it would be an interesting buy because, first, I had never used Essence before, and second, we don’t have many options available for gel pencils.
Cocoa bean is a stunning dark chocolate shade. It is the perfect brown, which is very much visible even on my dark eyelids; I know many brown eyeliners end up looking black and this is certainly not one of them. The texture is very creamy; while I was swatching it, the tip broke off when I swiped it twice. There is no tugging or pulling while applying, but I have to be extra careful considering how soft it is. Also, I couldn’t manage to have that sharp, precise line as the tip flattened out with every stroke.
Once applied, it sets to a powdery matte finish in next few seconds. I swiped my finger on my eyelid just to check whether it had actually set, and nothing came out. Regarding the wear time, I would say it is good. I applied this in the evening, went out and came back after 5 hours. I’ll just jot down everything that I noticed. The eyeliner was very much there but in bits and pieces. It had not smudged and there was nothing on the crease line too, which I liked. But it was all over my upper cheek just below the eye. I could see tiny black flecks over my under eye area too. I just didn’t like the sight. I mean the fall-out looked really bad. I think this eye pencil is good for 2-3 hours max; you know like you go out for a couple of hours, and come back, not when you have to do grocery, meet friends, have dinner with family, and come back (which I did)!!
the other shades I got:
Another thing about it is that it is waterproof, specially once it dries out. A splash of water does not budge or smudge it, so you do need a good makeup remover.
Overall, I think this a good budget eye pencil. It has some issues, but at this price you can’t really complain.

- Beautiful brown color.
- Creamy texture; no tugging/pulling required.
- Sets to a matte finish; once set, doesn’t budge.

What I didn’t love much about Essence Gel Eye Pencil Waterproof in 06 Cocoa Bean:
- Wear time not very impressive.
- Fall-out after 2-3 hours.
IMBB Rating: 3.8/5
