My take on Essence Kajal Pencil in Black:
I love kajal!! I love to try different brands but prefer to stick to the herbal ones. I have used Maybelline Colossal Kajal for a really long time and totally love it! But after I started using Lotus Herbals Kajal, I did not feel like going back to anything else for use on the waterline. Lotus kajal feels so cool when applied, does not sting, does not smudge a lot like other kajals, is herbal (so I don’t feel like I am putting unnecessary chemicals in my eyes) and totally inexpensive. But when I checked out this pencil at the Essence counter, it seemed quite nice and thought of giving it a try.
Packaging–The pencil is pretty sleek. The packaging is color-coded; the actual shade of the kajal is the same as the color of the pencil body. The silver colored cap fits snugly. It is a wooden pencil that needs to be sharpened. Nothing really awesome about the packaging, but simple and sturdy.
Color / Texture / Finish – The color is a deep, jet black. Possibly the blackest black I have used. This is the reason I actually bought this pencil. I have bought many eyeliners / kajals that claim to have the ‘blackest black’ shade, but most of them are not. The texture is buttery smooth. I would say it is too smooth for my liking. The tip of the pencil breaks off so easily, even when hardly any pressure is applied. It settles down to a complete matte finish.
Application – The good thing is that it is so easy to apply. No tugging and pulling required! Since it is so creamy and smooth, it glides on very easily. No kajal, or eyeliner that I have used has ever been this smooth. Seriously, one stroke application!!
Performance – Ok! The sad part begins! Does it smear or what!!! When I said that the application is smooth, I meant on the waterline. The SA has mentioned that I could use this on the lash line as an eyeliner as well (just like the colossal or Lakme eyeconic kajal). On the waterline, it glides on like butter. It smudges a bit like any other kajal (an actual, authentic kajal is anyway not supposed to be totally smudge free). It stays on the waterline for about 2-2.5 hours, and then vanishes completely after fading a bit! The good part – it does not sting / irritate the eyes even when applied on the waterline. When used on the upper lash line, it requires a bit of tugging (not much though). While applying, it clumps the lashes. It stays on for about 4-5 hours. But if you dab a tissue lightly, live in a humid place, or have oily lids, it will smear badly! In fact, when I ran a finger over my eyes, the kajal simply came off. It is not at all smudge proof orwaterproof. If applied on the lower lash line, it clumps the lashes at times and smears within a few minutes of application. I don’t know whether I should describe that look as that of a panda, racoon or some other animal!! I have never used any kajal / eyeliner that smears so much! It stays on for a 4-5 hours but keeps smearing. At one point, there was just a hint of color on my lash line and the rest had simply smeared on the under eye skin.
Pros of Essence Kajal Pencil in Black:
• Very pigmented, deep black shade
• Sturdy packaging
• Creamy texture
• Smooth application
• Does not sting / irritate eyes when applied on the waterline
• Easy to remove
Cons of Essence Kajal Pencil in Black:
• Way too creamy texture; crumbles and breaks off easily while applying
• Smears a LOT!!!
• Not smear proof, smudge proof or waterproof
• Staying power isn’t impressive
Love the pigmentation, but dislike this product as such! It is decent if used on just the waterline. But I had bought this thinking that I would use this as an eyeliner as well. That definitely did not turn out to be a good idea!!
