I bought a few lip liners from Essence recently. I will be reviewing them in the coming days. Essence is one brand which is very affordable and so you can get crazy and shop lot of items and get creative with trying new things. Today’s review is about Essence Soft Contouring Lipliner in the shade “04 So Lovesick”.

My Experience with Essence Soft Contouring Lipliner 04 So Lovesick:
The lip liner comes in a pencil form with wooden casing. It has a matching plastic cap to go with it. The color of the lip liner is mentioned on the pencil. The cap does not fit tightly to the liner. It gets loosen up and falls off. I thought it might be a fault with this pencil alone, but later, I realized that it was the case with all of them. This makes it totally not travel-friendly.
The color is pinkish red with blue undertone. It suits a wide range of skin tones, especially lighter skin tones. I have a dusky skin tone and it looks dark pink when applied. I use it to line plum or dark pink lipsticks. The color is beautiful and hence, the liner itself works well as a lipstick too. But when used as a lipstick, it should be layered with lip balm to avoid dry lips. I really like the colour and enjoy using it.
Since it is wooden pencil based and not retractable, there is wastage of the product every time when you sharpen it.
The texture of the lip pencil is not at all great. It has a dry texture and is difficult to work with. One needs to rub the product for the color to be seen, which involves a lot of tugging. Since it is so dry, it does not allow the lipstick to bleed.
To make it work as a lip liner, you just need to line the lips and it works well. But, to make it work as a lipstick, I apply lip balm first and then fill in the lips with the pencil. I also had to reapply the balm after every 2 hours or so, to prevent the lips from looking dry.
The lip liner does not get transferred easily. It stays on for around 5 hours or so. If applied as lipstick, it starts getting patchy at the end of the day and since the color is pinkish red, it is noticeable.
Overall, I feel that it can be a good pink based lip liner, which can also be used for shades of plum and dark pink with a little bit of effort.

- Not travel-friendly.
- Wastage due to sharpening.
- Feels dry on lips.
