Eyetex Supreme and Starlet Kajal Review, Comparison and Swatches

Hey you guys! 🙂

This is my first post on anything even remotely related to kohl/kajal, because till about a year ago, I didn’t ever use kohl. But now,

I am a regular kohl user, after becoming part of IMBB! 😀 I love the look kohl gives my eyes, and I find my daily makeup incomplete without kohl. I wonder how I used to manage without kohl before! 😛

There are numerous tiny beauty stores around, and they all carry the standard Lakme, Eyetex, (fake) VOV, Streetwear, Miss Claire, Revlon etc. I don’t like my basic Lakme kohl, as I feel it runs too much. That’s why I decided to try the local brands this time.

It was during this hunt of mine that I chanced upon these two kohls .

Starlet Kajal – Dry Eye Liner:
This kohl is my favourite so far! I totally love this one! Till today, I’ve tried Lakme (basic variant), Maybelline’s Colossal (stays well), and now this one and the Eyetex Supreme. I like the Starlet even better than the Maybelline Colossal, because it stays on better on my eyes, and is cuter (yes, I have weird reasons for liking stuff) than the Colossal.

When I bought it, the stick (without the cap on and not twisted up) was as tall as my little finger. It has a life of 2 years, and the quantity is 1.5 gms. I paid Rs. 12 for this beauty.
It doesn’t require sharpening, as it is a twist-up stick.

This is what’s left after half a month of daily (and twice a day) usage.

Eyetex Kajal Supreme:

It is not a very intense black, and is a pretty ordinary kohl. I’m no kohl expert, but I can compare the black-ness of kohls and pass verdicts! 😛 It stays on my eyes a bit better than the basic Lakme kohl, but still requires reapplication throughout the day. The stick does mention it is non smudge (I’m guessing that’s why it’s ‘supreme’) 😛 but I find it can be smudged, even hours after application, with minimal pressure. As I said before, it isn’t very intensely black, and can look dark brown in flash.

There is no mention of the quantity on the stick itself. Without the cap on, the stick measures a little taller than my ring finger. Sorry, but I don’t remember how much I paid for this. Definitely within Rs. 60, though.

It requires sharpening, and is one of those fat pencils, kind of like the basic Lakme kohl. It is manufactured by Aravind Laboratories, Chennai. This brand is apparently very big in the South (I have not heard of it so far, nor have I seen advertisements for it around).

Staying Power Comparison:
Starlet stays the best on my eyes, so far! I equal it to Maybelline’s Colossal Kajal, or maybe even a bit better! The Eyetex one is similar to the basic Lakme one in terms of staying power – nothing impressive. I always use powder under my eyes, so that my kohl doesn’t run, whatever kohl I’m using. Starlet stays on my eyes as stark as when I first applied it till noon, and then it fades a bit. By the end of the day (without any touchups in the day), it does collect onto the lower lash line, but then all the kohls I’ve used so far do that. It doesn’t give me racoon eyes; that could be because I don’t kohl my eyes heavily, but only draw a sharp thin line on the lower waterline. The Eyetex Supreme fades off within 2 hours.

Color Comparison:
The Starlet is a very dark black, and gives intense color in just one swipe. There are surely blacker kohls out there, but this one is pretty much up there with the rest of them! The Eyetex Supreme is an okayish black, and it can look dark brown in intensely bright light. Not a good thing, since when you buy it, you expect to buy a BLACK kohl, and not one that looks brown I certain light!

Texture:
The Starlet kohl is more ‘oily’ and slick when compared to the Eyetex Supreme. I know, I found it weird too. I always assumed that an oilier liner would not stay as long as one that isn’t as oily, but for me, the Starlet stays better than the Eyetex Supreme! Go figure! 🙂

Cooling effect:
I have always heard about the cooling effect of certain kohls, but I have never experienced it. I’m guessing homemade kohls have such effect on the eyes. I’m not really sure, as I have never made kohl at home, and neither have my parents or their parents. I doubt anyone in my family even knows that kohl can be made at home (except for me, after reading posts on IMBB)! 😛 The Starlet has this interesting cooling factor when applied on the eyes, and I took quite some time to get used to it (watering eyes alert!); but now, I’m quite used to it, and have no problem putting it on. If you find cooling kohls nice to use, then you’ll love this one. The Eyetex Supreme has no cooling effect at all, just like the others I’ve used so far (Maybelline Colossal Kajal, Lakme basic variant).

Smell:
I HATE the smell of the Starlet (I guess it’s the camphor in it). It smells awful! However, because of all the other nice things it does, I’m ready to forgive it for its smell! 😛 The Eyetex Supreme has no discernable smell to it.

Swatches!
Note that these swatches are applied with a very VERY light hand. Also, each swatch is ONLY one swipe each.

See what I mean (below piccy) that the Eyetex sometimes looks brownish in intense light? And these pictures haven’t been retouched or anything – I think I shook when I clicked the picture, and that gives the swatches their muted effect.

Verdict:
Starlet is my new HG kohl, and I will buy another stick once this one gets over. The Eyetex Supreme I don’t think I’ll be buying again. I doubt I’ll even want to finish the stick I currently possess off! What worked for me may not work for you, but if you are on the lookout for a new kohl, this just might be it!

  8. Hi. I am in the Philippines and I found a store here that sells the Starlet Kohl. But are they safe? Don’t they contain lead or any other harmful elements? I also want to make sure it is FDA approved for the eyes. The price is tempting, but we have to be sure about its safety. Great blog, by the way! Thanks!
