Today’s post is about a skincare ritual that each one of us follows and it is facial cleansing. I’m sure most of us already make sure to use a facial cleanser that is best suited to our skin type and skin concerns. However, facial cleansing is such an important part of our daily skincare routine that it’s easy to make some of these common mistakes. So, how do you get the most out of your facial cleansing routine? Let’s take a look at what these common facial cleansing mistakes are and how you can avoid them.
1. Not Cleansing Your Face Twice a Day:
Many of us end up being too lazy at the end of the day to cleanse our face. But, this is probably the worst skincare mistake you can make. Cleansing once in the morning and once at the end of the day is a must. Needless to say, make sure to remove every trace of makeup before you get into bed at night.
2. Using Extreme Temperatures to Cleanse:
Don’t make the mistake of using hot water on your face believing that it is going to help in opening up your pores and that cold water is going to help in closing them. Hot water can be too harsh on your skin and cold water can be ineffective. Lukewarm water is the best choice for washing your face.
3. Using Harsh Exfoliating Cleansers:
It’s good to get rid of the dead skin cells on your face every few days, but make sure that your exfoliators are not too harsh or abrasive. Go for the gentle but effective type of facial scrubs.
4. Not Using Chemical Exfoliators:
In addition to physical exfoliators and scrubs, it is essential to use chemical exfoliators that use acids and peels to deep cleanse the face. They go beneath the surface of the skin to deeply renew the cells.
5. Depending Too Much on Devices for Cleansing:
Facial cleansing brushes are all rage in the market, nowadays. But, it’s important to realise that the right cleanser and the right technique are more important than any facial cleansing device can be. If you choose a cleansing device, make sure that you use it appropriately and keep it clean.
6. Cleansing More than Once:
This technique is known as ‘double cleansing’ and I’m guilty of the same. It means that you first remove your makeup and then in the second round of cleansing you finally cleanse your skin. Doing this on a regular basis can strip your skin of the essential oils. The trick is to opt for a cleanser that can remove your makeup and deeply cleanse your face at once.
7. Using Cleansing Balms/Creams/Oils All the Time:
While cleansing balms, cleansing creams and cleansing oils are gentle and effective and leave your skin feeling incredibly soft and smooth, these products often interfere with the skincare essentials (such as toner, moisturizer, serum, etc.) that you apply on your face after your cleanse. These balms, creams and oils often leave a layer of moisture on your skin, not allowing the products that follow to be absorbed too well by the skin. While you should use cleansing balms, creams and oils every now and then, also make sure to include natural cleansers, scrubs and gel-based cleansers in your skincare routine.
8. Not Using Clean Hands:
Finally, but most importantly, you have to clean your hands before washing your face. It is absolutely essential for you to have clean and sanitised hands before you begin your skincare routine. Before you start washing your face, make sure your hands have been thoroughly washed. Once you make this a habit, you will see a huge difference in the texture and hygiene of your skin, thereafter.
