All about Facial Hair Removal

In the fashion-conscious world of today, everyone wants to look presentable in the society. Be it a man or a woman everyone pays a keen attention to personal grooming and does not shy away from making a change in there appearance.

Mentioned below are few methods to get rid of facial hair.

Temporary methods of facial hair removal:

Waxing: It is the oldest and the most popular semi-permanent method of removing underarm hair. In this method wax is applied over the skin and then it is ripped off in the opposite direction of the hair growth by a cloth or a paper strip. But like all the other beauty treatments this method too has few pros and cons.

Threading: Another highly sought after hair removal technique that can give you a clean face last for weeks. It is quick and generally inexpensive which makes it popular among people.

Permanent methods of facial hair removal includes:

Laser Treatment: Laser hair removal has become extremely popular in the recent times because of its speed and efficiency. It involves using the light energy to destroy the hair in a follicle. This method does not work as well on fine hair as on coarse hair. It is a FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved method for permanent hair reduction.

Electrolysis: In this method electric current is used to destroy the hair follicle and since one hair is focused at a time the results are precise and better compared to laser treatment. Electrolysis was invented in United States over hundred years ago. Just like laser treatment multiple sittings are needed to ‘permanently’ remove the underarm hair.

Electrolysis has been recognized as the only ‘permanent method’ of hair removal by the Food and Drug Administration and the American Medical Association. Unlike laser, electrolysis is effective on all hair colours. Electrolysis is of three types- Galvanic Electrolysis, Thermolysis Electrolysis and Blend Electrolysis.

In the galvanic electrolysis, as the name suggests, hair follicle is destroyed chemically whereas in the thermolysis electrolysis it is destroyed using heat. In blend electrolysis, both the above two methods are combined to produce electro chemical reaction.

Home remedies:

Apart from the above treatments facial hair can be removed at home too.

• Blend one egg white with 1 tablespoon of sugar and 1/2 tablespoon of corn flour until it becomes a sticky paste. Apply the mixture to your face. When it dries gently peel it off. Repeat this 3-4 times a week.

• Take 1/4 cup each of water and lemon juice, add 2 cups of sugar and heat this mixture in a pan until a smooth consistency is formed. Let it cool at room temperature. Apply this paste in the direction of hair growth and let it stay for 10-15 minutes. Gently peel off and rinse your face with water.

• Apply a mixture of 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice and 4 teaspoons honey in the direction of hair growth. Rinse after 10-15 minutes.

• Take chana flour and add water or milk in it to prepare a thick paste. Add ¼ spoon of turmeric powder and 1 tsp of fresh cream into the paste. Apply this mixture on your face and let it stay for 25-20 minutes. Once it dries off scrub off this paste in the opposite direction of hair growth.

  1. ohh.. such a nice article.. i dont like bleaching and all and am just scared of it.. the home remedies are awessommee.. 😀
    thanksss 😉 :*

  2. Nice review ERA. I would like to let the girls over here know that the so called laser hair removal is not permanent. I suffer from upper lip hair growth, and was waxing for 2 years, and in 2007 came to know about Kaya’s permanent hair removal methods. The doc suggested me 6 sittings, and my last sitting was in 2009. And now after few years, again I can see the same hair growth. Wondering what did they claim by saying permanent laser hair removal method for life time. This is purely my experience, and would like to know if any one benefited from tht trmt. I mean did the result stay even after few years :-).

      1. yeah, i reached them and got very mean reply. They said it might be hormonal changes in me, and suggested for other 4 sittings. Why the hell I would waste my money again. But yes, my hairs are not so thick as they used to be, at the same time its visible for naked eye too. Still, the assurance of permanent did not work from the so called very big brand.

    1. I second you sandhya.. even i have somewhat similiar experience before. Before marriage, I had a very normal hair growth on face, but i wanted to get rid of it and I went to one of the reputed laser clinic in banglore, Dr. Shetty’s, I did almost 8 sittings and i could see lesser growth and I was satisfied. Then after 4 years , after my son was born, i had hormonla imbalance and i got worst hair growth, hairs were so dark and think like beard. Then again I went to laser clinic, this time in kerala my cousin’s own clinic, I did atleast 6 sittings but there was no change in the hair growth. I guess it kind of increase. So he told me i dont think it will reduce otherwise u have to start using hormone tablets alos. For that I was not ready , and I decide to let it be like that only. Nowadays, atleast growth didnt increase, but it didnt decrease also. esp in the chin area,it feels so rough to touch . I always feels bad 🙁 but i either, shave or epilate. no other way, bleach dont work on that hairs:(

  3. very informative….but someone told me that lemon juice n honey facepack increases facial hair growth. I am very confused. otherwise it is the most easiest tip 🙂

  4. The home made ones seem so easy and am very tempted to try them out but i am a little skeptical about removing the hair from my face since I worry it will come back thicker like a beard or something. Am thinking that just for that reason i should stick to bleaching else woh tension mein hi mera jaan nikhal jaayega 🙂 hahah. . After some trial and error Jolen and Oxy bleach seem to work best.

  5. I was planning to go for Laser.. hmm I have PCOS / hormonal imbalance hence have decided to get that cured first and then I will go for laser..

Electrolysis sounds good but I am sure it would be far too expensive

Era thanks for the informative article… 🙂

  6. i had laser done on my chin area.it was great in first year but now its back to where it started.i plan on getting electrolysis done.can anyone suggest me any good place for it to be done in delhi ncr.desperately waiting for a reply.

  7. this is great!! i am so tempted to try the home remedies! 🙂
i wish tension se facial hai jharh jaate n not the ones on my head 🙁 😐

  8. Hi Era! Great post! I usually do threading or cut them by scissors.. and was thinking of getting a laser one done at Kaya..but Sandhya’s comment has initiated a new thought process “to go or not to go” ..Shall try your home remedies..

    1. Hi Nidhi. Thts true, all these laser trmts are just long temporary solution (just for few years) again you get back your hair. Way back in 2007 they charged me about 2000 inr per sitting. Heard a lot about electrolysis but hesitated due to pain.

  9. Does anybody know of a good dermatologist in Hyderabad? I’d like to get laser treatment done but I don’t trust Kaya or VLCC. Also, I’ve heard that laser works better on fair skin, since hair follicles are far more visible on lighter skin tones. Is this true?

  10. hello every one ………please help me ….i have a hair on my chin …..i’m decided to go for electrolysis ……but i’m getting confusion which is the best place for electrolysis in hyderabad…….please help me because i’m going to marry in few months…..i’m waiting for your replay………

  11. Hi all!! I too have facial hair.. But they aren’t on a heavier side. I get them waxed every 2 or 2.5 mths.. This has worked for me pretty well.. But yes waxing the face can be troublesome for some skin types.. My beautician suggests that I pop an anti allergic to keep any rashes at bay..also, I bleach my face 3-4 days after getting my face waxed.. This makes the skin look clear!!
