My Top Favorite Breakfast Ideas

Breakfast is my most exciting meal of the day. Breakfast is a habit that my mom has got all of us in the family . And now we are stuck with it. 😛 I wake up soooo hungry every morning. I have to have my good gourmet breakfast or else I feel low through out the day.

So here are some of the many quick breakfasts that I make. I would love to know your breakfast options as well. Please do share. :))

Poha : Probably my most cooked and my favourite breakfast. When I make poha in morning, I have it for lunch and dinner as well. Oh Dear! 😛 I just toss in whatever veggies I have handy at a given point of time. And a good squeeze of lemon never hurts. 🙂

poha

Oats with warm milk : Eight out of ten times I like my breakfast to be warm. You can make this with curd or cold milk or almond milk as well. I throw in a few dry fruits and a cinnamon to make the meal more nutritious.

oats milk

Mango / Fruit Parafait : It’s basically nothing. Take a tall glass – add fruit yogurt->museli / crushed granola->fruit cubes->fruit yogurt->museli / crushed granola->fruit cubes . In that order. It would look something like THIS . It takes 5 minutes to make. It’s yum and it’s healthy. 🙂

museli fruit curd

Fruit Smoothies : Basically it is fresh cut fruit + milk+ fruit curd (substitute for sugar) + ice. Blend it in a blender and top it with dry fruits or muesli. It’s super filling and good for you. 🙂

I love making sandwiches so I keep my fridge full with condiments that I would need to make a sandwich. Some of them are fresh veggies, various kinds of cheese, olives, capers, Dijon mustard etc.

healthy vegetable sandwich

And sometimes it’s just the good old crunchy peanut butter sandwich. 🙂

Eggs : I loooovee eggs. I make eggs so many ways – omelettes, sunny side up, egg in the basket, boiled, scrambled, french toast, egg rolls. They are so filling and you get your proteins first thing in the morning. 🙂

I am a vegetarian / eggetarian so these are my some of the options. But if you are a non vegetarian, you can add ham or bacon in your sandwiches as well.

When I have a lot of time I also make paranthas and  have them with curd. I am trying to figure out a few healthy baking options as well. Let’s see what I discover. 🙂

  1. I looove eggs for b’fast. I love any style but the sunny side up version most of all and ‘eggs in a basket’ is pretty fun too. Picked up some onion/cheese bagels over the weekend so had a toasted bagel with an omlette this morning with orange juice . We like the other usual stuff too so its usually either dosa (cucumber, atta)/idlis/puris/jowar roti/parathas etc.

      1. I just toast them on the tava with some slight butter and on both sides so that there will a nice crunch overall. Alternatively, you can also toast them in the toaster and make sure they dont get burnt becos its pretty thick and might not come up easily. An Egg and cheese bagel is fairly common but you can eat it according to your preference. if you have an onion bagel for e.g, you can eat it plain with just butter since the flavour from the onion is enough but again its personal choice ofcourse

  2. Hi Rati,
I am so surprised, even I love eggs and take atleast one daily! Hey I thought you must be making some idli and dosa for breakfast since you love south indian food. Every time when I think of it, it surprises me that a pure Delhite loving south indian food! Hot idly and spicy tangy hot sambar are my favourite items for breakfast accompanied with hot filter coffee. You put some of your recipes also in the blog please…

    1. actually nisha, I eat idlis for lunch. It’s too much of a work and in morning i need super quick breakfasts. But i looooveee all south indian food. if i could I’d have it everyday. 😀

  3. Oh Wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww……..Jai Ho Rati………..amazing clicks…..I wanted breakfast ideas so badly….I was seriously in need of such a post…..PLEASE DO MORE….ISSPECIAL REQUEST 🙂

  4. that fruit parafait looks so yum! definitely gonna try it tomrw morning! 🙂
I always include egg whites in my breakfast. In addition, I usually go for options like savoury pancakes and oatcakes, vegetable upma, fruit palette, stuffed idlis.
On cheat days i totally go for mum’s good old paneer or aloo paranthas 😀

      1. Thats simple Rati.. its almost similar to how you make poha just replace poha with oats and you can also add a few drops of water to it if you dont want it to be like dry poha.

        1. Heat oil, add mustard seeds, curry leaves, green chillies and fry. Add chopped onions, tomato and other veggies. Add salt n turmeric if u wish to

        2. Add oats to it and fry till they are brown in color. You can sprinkle a little water n some lime juice.

Its READY! and hey if you like south indian food.. try out sooji/oats idli! I am very fond of SI food and thats what I often make when I am running short of time.. no need to grind the dal n all..

        1. Hi surabhi!
I make oatcakes in old Scottish style. Baked or pan fried.
Would love to try this poha-style recipe too! Thanks for sharing! 🙂

            1. Surabhi, i left a link to the oatcake recipe but the comment is still in moderation 🙁
You can find a simple recipe for baked ones at bbc good food. Baked oatcakes have a cracking biscuity texture while pan-fried ones have a pancakey texture.
When running out of time, I simply follow the original recipe but instead of baking i pan-fry them fr 3 mins each side.
It is traditionally eaten with cheese!
Do try it out once 🙂

  5. Eggs are my number one breakfast option too!!! Then any kind of sandwiches – egg, tuna, chicken, grilled cheese with veggies, anything at all!! Also Malayali favs like appam/idiyappam-stew, puttu-kadala along with regular south Indie stuff – dosa/idli – sambar/chutney, upma etc. Aah, hardly anything can beat soft, lacy appams with some delicious creamy stew in the mornings!!!

  6. its morning tym by seeing all this yummy yummy breakfast….
    um feeling hungry ….
BTW i love poha more than nethng…………!!!

    1. jomo, we’d talk. 😀 :-*

sounds awesome fab but havent heard of most of the thing you listed. guess it’s the traditional southie food. would love to try. 🙂

  7. Nice breakfast ideas Rati!!!! 🙂 The pics are so mouth watering 🙂
My breakfasts are usually: Idlis/dosas with chutney/sambar, Poha, oats in numerous styles (my favourite being oats khichdi), Poha cooked in Khichdi style, veggie upma, vermicelli upma. Plus that special ingredient, maa ka pyaar! 🙂

  8. hello!i came across this really nice idea on pinterest… u break eggs into a muffin pan add salt condiments veggies etc n bake for 15 to 20 mins … yum breakfast eggs to be put on bagels.!for breakfast i usually make parathas for hubby and for me muesli or sometimes idli made previous day whoch is tossed in the masala u use for poha.. that also tastes very good.n best is leftover dry sabzi stuffed in paratha….

  9. Hey Rati, great to see poha taking the number 1 spot i love it too…it is a very good option. i totally agree with your bfast ideas. 🙂

  10. Poha seems to be everyone’s favi.. 🙂
Idlis and dosa varieties are my favi..masala dosa especially 🙂
I have my brkfast always in the office cafe, i love the masala dosa and the wheat dosa they serve..

  11. Awww ditto for most of the things Rati….esp Poha (I know what u mean by having it in lunch and dinner too hahaha….that applies to all our favourite thingies no ;)), museli, veggie sandwich and peanut butter!! Since I love bread pakora I make healthier version of it on tawa. Also besan chilla with onion tomato is my fav. Some other quick and healthy options that I make for bfast are – Instant dosa, uttapam, bread pizza, corn bruschetta 🙂 For brunches we love to indulge on – Paav bhaaji, Chole Bhaturey, Kathi rolls, Paneer frankie and paranthas. It going to be hard to get back to work without munching something now 😛 😛

    1. oh yeah tara, i totally make my besan bread on tava. it’s the best thing my mom has taught me seriously. 😀 i know poha toh is my first love in foods. 😀 awww i havent had chole bhature since ages now. now i want to have. :((

      1. Go for it in Haldiram or Sitaram ke Chole Bhaturey in Pahaadganj…it’s delicious and was our fav in college days!! Or better still, come to my place next time I make them 😎

  12. rati di,
such mouth watering posts in the morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and I didnt have breakfast today 🙁 But great options mostly mine too! But you forgot two laziest options bread butter jam, and toast with chai! Tehse two are my staples. Plus try bread upma if you like it! You can take your poha recepie and substitute it with bread! add soem green chilis and use ghee instead of oil for seasoning! You bread upma is ready!

  13. Hi! Love your breakfast options. My current favorite breakfast nowadays is oats tikki (recipe taken from Tarla Dalal’s website)..very very healthy and tasty..a must try !!

    1. i’d check it out shikha. thanks. :))

sandhya, i mostly avoid break jam and bread butter in morning no matter how much i like them. they are just empty carbs . i like to have something nutritious in morning. 🙂 i’d try the bread upma. thank you. 🙂

  14. yummmihhhh! the clicks are sooo gud.. my tummy is growling now.. ;/
hehe!! at my moms plc.. poha, upma, grilled sandwiches, besan ka pura, bread pakoras, parathas etc etc…

but at sasural.. on working days its limited to muesli/cornflakes n milk.. n usually on holidays its aloo puri or parathas and egg bhurji or eggs and toast :p

    1. hihihyeah i also make besan ke pure. they are so yum and healthy too. :)) you can scramble your eggs at sasural also na … hihih it takes 2 minutes. 😛

  15. Hi…got some wonderful ideas from the post..breakfast is the most important meal health wise too but have least time to prepare. Do try oats chilla. As u make the normal one, mix besan, salt, green chilli, coriader leaves, onion and handful of oats. Not only it tastes gud, its healthy option for all. I liked bread upma idea.., going to try tmrw. :}

    1. thanks sushma. I’d definitely try the oats chilla. I make besan bread on tava because i like besan bread but dont have the heart to eat the fried version. 😛 Thank you. 🙂

  16. I looove poha, esp with peanuts! On lazy days, I don’t mind even poha washed (with drinking water) and soaked in milk with sugar/jaggery! On equally lazy days poha washed and soaked with curd, chillies and ginger!

And then variety of dosas, non fermented best, barely any preparation required!

Steamed sprouted moong with chopped tomatoes, onions (if you don’t mind them in morning!) steamed corn and little chaat masala and raw veggies of your choice…filling and good for those watching their weight! During the sedentary exam days, the sprouts breakfast helped me not gain weight!

    1. geee.. hope you enjoyed your poha ila. 🙂

oh ! i have not tried poha with curd and sugar. i guess i’d give it a shot. thanks. Great tips varsha. 🙂

      1. oye…curd salt OR milk sugar……for lazy people it is. Curd poha chilli salt ginger is the thing we have for janmashtami actually, but I can have it all year!

  17. Loved the compilation!!! I just love poha and fruits in the morning… My other favorites are sprouts and porridge.. 🙂 I can have these things anytime… 🙂

  18. Oooooh love the list! My daily staple is oats with milk and fruits and weekends pe eggs 🙂
Reallly enjoyed reading this post and salivating at the pics 🙂

    1. try more option aarbee. 😀 thanks 🙂

thank you pallavi. I dont enjoy eating sprouts. have tried so many times but i have never been able to develop a taste for them. 🙁 they are soo healthy no.

      1. Yeah I agree with you on that point Rati… Earlier sprouts never tempted me but now I started experimenting by mixing various fruits & veggies and many seasonings… 🙂 I can have it for all the three meals now!!!!

  19. Hi rati, there are many more breakfast ideas… like Upma, Moongdal dosa, lauki thepla, cornmill upma, methi thepla.. green moong and spinach dosa, rava idli.. all these are very easy recipes and take no time to prepare…

  20. loved all pics Rati… somehow I’m feeling very hungry today, even after lunch in the office, and now I wanna grab something out of the pics and eat, right now! pass on the last one to me, please!

I love cheese toast, poached egg, brown bread sandwiches for breakfast, along with a glass of juice or a mug full of coffee…

  21. I am glad that I read this post just 20 minutes after I was fed and watered. If I’d read it an hour ago, I’d have ravaged the whole place shrieking for food and flattening anyone who came my way. 😛

I love Poha and sandwiches in the morning. Otherwise, I am pretty picky when it comes to breakfast recipes. Can’t digest eggs (least of all in the morning) and hate sugary cereals. My usual staple is paranthas. 😀

    1. lolllll!!! i also take a good look at the contents before buying meuseli. I go for sugar free options otherwise it defines the whole purpose. 🙂

  22. I need to be more careful to eat breakfast!! At office we usually get really nice poha and sometimes idlis, vadas etc. I love eggs too, and fruits, this article is a useful way to remember what all options I can go for! 😀

  23. As I’m single and working, my breakfast mostly is something which can be quick…..so definitely poha with whatever veggies i can grab, egg scramble again with veggies but i include handful of some sorta leafy vegetable in them (mostly spinach, methi or whatever but only one kind)
Then pancakes…i usually have a pancake flour mix made for me by Mom and I just prepare a batter with milk and lil water and pancakes in 5 mins are ready….then just spread some honey+nutella on it and roll it and eat it while getting ready for work
On a really lazy day, its Muesli (Good Earth) or Banana Cornflakes (Kelloggs)…
Also, about oatmeal…my mom had tried many variations of it…I had tried many variation…but I do not like oatmeal….its just tooo healthy for me i guess 😀

  24. Loved the post, I usually make oatmeal with fruits and coffee every day, weekends egg omlet with cheese and a toast or pancakes. Some times cereal with milk.

  25. hiihih, i knew ur poha wud b at #1 slot 😛 😛 😛
even i prefer to take a heavy bfast and most of times i skip lunch 😛
My breakfast options are Porridge(salted) wid veges, sandwitches, muesli wid milk, Idlis, n once in a while i make aaallloooo/stuffed paratha ^_^ 🙂 🙂
