Fenty Beauty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter Trophy Wife Review

Hello everyone,

When Fenty Beauty by Rihanna was launched, it got the whole makeup world buzzing. I love Rihanna as much as everyone, but at first, the collection, although really pretty, wasn’t really calling to me much, that is until I saw the “Trophy Wife” highlighter. Omg !! If there was ever a prettier highlighter than this, then I have been living in the dark (pun intended) !! But the problem with this highlighter was that because of its super golden hue, it does not to suit all skin tones. Well, on the behalf of all us desi girls, I had to investigate and upon getting a chance, grabbed this with both hands. As always, read on to know a super detailed review on Fenty Beauty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter in the shade “Trophy Wife.”

My Experience with  Fenty Beauty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter Trophy Wife:

Packaging: Most, if not all of Fenty (notice the detail of the flipped N in the name) products, have an octagon shape in one way or the another. I especially love this design in her match six (review coming soon), which also have a cool magnetic aspect to them. The Killawatt (I love puns, so I was all over this killer name) has a sleek octagon design with smooth as marble-like feel on the outside. The compact feels lightweight but does not feel cheap. There is no slot or any applicator provided which I don’t mind as I rarely use those. Inside the compact is this glorious highlighter with FB engraved on it.

Shade/Pigmentation/Look on Skin:  I would definitely recommend using the slightest touch with this product as it is very, very pigmented. This is possibly the most sparkling highlighter in the market – meaning it is choke full of micro glitter. While it may not be for everyone, but I cannot deny that it looks most unique than any other highlighter in my stash. The glitter is very very fine but each of those catch the light and each and every one of those twinkle. I cannot emphasize enough that the pictures do not do it justice !!

Consistency/Texture: This is a true cream to powder highlight. It feels smooth as cream ( though not wet or emollient) and turns in powder upon blending. It sets to a complete, non-tacky feel on the skin, though you wouldn’t be able to tell as it looks so glowy and wet. It is glittery but not gritty. Even though it is creamy, I had no problem picking it up and blending it with a wispiest fan brush (my Wayne Goss fan brush) while you could use a denser brush (my other favorite highlighting brush is Real Techniques Setting Brush), it would apply too much. While it is the opposite if you were to just this as an eyeshadow, you get the most payoff if you use it with your fingertips like I have done in the EOTD.

Another unique aspect of this shade is its true gold hue. While some may argue a shade like this will only work with deeper skin tones (which I back up to some extent), there are some ways I have found that I can make this work for my light-medium skin. Since you do not want it to look like you just have a streak of gold on your face, it is very important with this highlighter to blend the edges (unless you have deeper skin tone and this easily blends and suits your skin tone) with a highlight similar or close to your skin tone. I take a subtle highlight (so I am not putting more glow over crazy glow) some thing like my Cle de Peau Luminizing Highlighter and do a light dusting over this highlighter to tone down the golden look a bit and blend the edges. It makes a world of a difference! While this may seem like a lot of work, but this is just something us makeup lovers don’t mind doing, right!?

Since this highlighter is very glittery, it does moderately emphasize textural issues on the skin and I would not really recommend this highlighter for those with bigger pores or breakouts unless you use a pore filling base first. You can refer to the attached photos – one appealing to the aesthetics of Instagram aka “with filters” and the other without it, so that you and me can keep it real, see how my breakouts are emphasized more in the other pic.

Staying Power:  This shade worked beautifully as an eyeshadow, there was minimal creasing or fading over 6 hours of wear. As highlighter, it lasted 5-6 hours before I noticed some fading.
Now, let’s get to the part that I do not like about this highlighter (because no product is perfect) – the glitters travel all over your face. Even though they are super micro and I usually use this highlighter when I’m going all out, I don’t really mind the look of sparking all over, but that is something to note. Also, this is really hard to get off completely. Even when I do double cleansing with oil and soap, I still find stray glitter on my face even the next day, which can get annoying.

Overall, I am absolutely in love with this highlighter. It is not an everyday product, it is something for special events, looks best with a full-glam makeup as opposed to a “no makeup makeup look.” Since this is not a universally-flattering color, do make sure to swatch it in store if you able to or if you already grabbed it and are trying to make it work for you, try some of my tips as see if that helps. I 100% recommend this for its uniqueness and the crazy “out of the world” glow.
