Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gioia Eau de Parfum Review

Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gioia Eau de Parfum

Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gioia Eau de Parfum is a charming sense of jubilation from the very first vegetal notes which are carried along in a deliciously heady current of crushed Mint, with a zest of Italian Limone Primo Fiore Femminelle, harvested from the first spring blossoms in Calabria.

This emotion transforms into an aquatic renaissance with a delicate and crystalline nature derived from the scent of Water Jasmine, giving the perfume sophisticated and unexpected facets.

At its base, Acqua di Gioia bears the signature of water rooted in the Earth, revealed by luscious Cedar sprinkled with sensuous Brown Sugar and Labdanum, which is one the rare plants to possess animal notes.
It was created by three perfumers: Loc Dong, Anne Flipo, and Dominique Ropion, and released in March 2010. Available in 30, 50, and 100ml in Eau de Parfum, it costs $39.50 to $80.

Top notes- Mint, Limone Primo Fiore Femminelle.
Heart notes- Aquatic green accord, Pink pepper, Jasmine Sambac, Peony.
Base notes- Cedar, Labdanum, and Brown sugar accord.
Rough translation into English using Google Translate: water of joy. Acqua di Gioia was reportedly inspired by Armani’s travels to the islands of Pantelleria (an island in the Strait of Sicily) and Antigua (located in the Caribbean region).

This bottle is actually my mom’s! We gave it to her as a gift on her recent birthday, mainly because she wanted a new perfume and my dad’s signature scent for the longest time has been the male fragrance counterpart of this, Acqua di Gio. I’m free to use this when I want, and she can also borrow any perfume of mine anytime, so I decided to take it for a spin and write a review of it.

I like the bottle—the light, nearly transparent green liquid is cool to the eye, and the bottle feels like a big, smooth, cool rock in my hand. It comes in a simple blue box.

The scent, in a nutshell, I would say, is a subtle, casual fruity floral with sugary sweetness.

It starts off a citrus, but soft lemony scent. No sharp, cleaning-product like smell here, just a subtle and fresh, but soft lemon, very relaxed and comfortable to wear. Mint is listed as one of the notes, but my nose doesn’t detect any, which is okay—this smells just fine.

Jasmine Sambac is included in the heart or middle notes, and the smell of this flower is one that I’m very familiar with (it just happens to be my country’s national flower). It’s similar to jasmine, and has a sweet, but clean white floral scent. I think it gives that sweet, floral smell to Acqua di Gioia, and at the same time, there are also hints of aquatic notes, which make me think of the smell of water, or bodies of water. There are just hints of it though, it never dominates, and it seems to help make the fragrance fresh and keeps it from being way too sweet.

In the base notes, if you notice, there’s Brown Sugar accord, and it smells prominent to me. I already smell it earlier on as the fragrance develops, not just when the perfume dries down on my skin. My mom thinks it smells like coconut, and seems to dislike that, but I on the other hand really like gourmand scents—they’re comforting to me. I don’t smell coconut, but something like actual brown sugar, that’s not sticky sweet, but that’s sort of powdered down, lighter, and warm. I like it. The drydown on me is a snuggly type of scent, and is not cloying.

Initially I found Acqua di Gioia too sweet, but I’m starting to like it more and more. It’s a happy and simple, but good fragrance. Quite perfect for weekends or a little holiday. It’s uplifting and I would totally get it from my mom’s closet on a dreary, rainy day. If you generally dislike perfumes that tend to smell sweet, don’t steer clear of this, give it a chance using just a dab or one spray. I wouldn’t want you to miss out, like I almost did—it’s a happy little summer fragrance worth trying.

  3. I LOVE foody smelling perfumes too, Ida! I think they’re simply amazing, because it would look a tad weird if I went about in public with a piece of lemon and some chocolate taped to my nose. :((
