Premature Grey Hair– Cause and Prevention
When you are still under 30 yrs of age and there are salt among the pepper in your hair then you are a victim of premature greying.
Unlike previous generations this generation suffers premature grey hair on a large scale. Also researchers say that the condition might become more severe and common in future if proper precautions are not taken. This IT boom has reflected on the younger generation with more stress, more working hours and less resting time. Thus the most common reason for this greying is stress, improper diet and improper sleep. This leads to lack of essential vitamins and minerals in human body. Also heredity seems to be a common reason for this premature greying. Let me list few common causes and preventive measures here.
Causes
- Improper Diet
- Mental Stress
- Heredity
- Unclean Habits
- Fake Hair Products
Improper Diet – Vitamins and minerals are very essential for a healthy hair. When you go with hair problem your doctor’s first prescription would be iron supplements. Hence it is necessary to include a diet that is rich in Vitamin B, iron and iodine.
Mental Stress – Too much and unnecessary tension caused early greying as well. It is always important to keep oneself calm and handle issues with a tension free mind. Meditation has proven to reduce stress in people effectively.
Heredity – Sometimes the reason for premature greying can be as simple as heredity. If your parents, cousins or anybody in the family have faced this then there are chances for you to face the problem, but this alerts one well in advance.
Unclean habits – Using others comb, not washing hair properly and letting dust accumulate in the scalp are all major reasons associated with problems related to hair. So it is highly necessary to keep your scalp and hair clean always.
Fake Hair Products – Using some random or fake hair products like shampoos might damage the scalp very badly which has this skin that supplies all nutrients to the hair root. Damaging this would directly affect colour-producing cells that gives the pigment to the hair. Melanin is the pigment that gives the hair colour. More melanin, the darker the hair will be.
It is important to note that there is no safe permanent solution for greying and the only temporary solution available, after greying occurs, is using hair dye which in turn causes more greying. So prevention is always better than cure and thus I am listing few preventive measures.
Preventive Measures for Premature Greying
1. Iron intake is very important to have a healthy problem free hair. It is good to consult your dermatologist once in a while and discuss the problems with your hair and also have a regular hair check up. My friend had a patch of grey hair at the back of her head and she didn’t find that until she met her dermatologist.
2. Amla is a good source of iron and applying amla based hair packs in hair and also intake of amla helps prevent greying. Curry leaves also helps in preventing this.
3. Daily diet rich in iron and vitamins also results in healthy problem free hair.
4. One has to be regular in cleansing hair and also while choosing hair products. If they are allergic to any particular chemical you should always check for the ingredients in the shampoo.
5. Avoid smoking which also leads to greying and hair fall.
Popular Myth – You pluck one grey hair and you get two. This is completely a false statement.
Interesting Factor – Grey hair is actually not white or grey but colourless or transparent. Lack of the pigment Melanin makes the hair transparent.
No one would expect a grey hair before 30 yrs but one fine morning when you wake-up you might find one and that will be totally depressing. I am not scaring you but this is how my friend described it when she saw her grey hair. So we don’t know whether we will face this problem or not. It is always better to prevent premature greying and start to take proper care of your hair.

One of the best home remedies for premature graying of hair comprises of curry leaves. Include them in your daily diet. Alternatively, you can put some curry leaves in coconut oil and boil it. Strain the oil and let it cool down. Apply it over the scalp.

nice article aarthi…. 🙂 this is how my mom made me eat curry leaves when i was young…. 😛 now it has just become a habit…. but yeah stress and life style have a huge impact….
My mother had her first grey hair at 15. My hair turned grey when I was 7 🙁 And, I was worried my children would be born with grey hair (just doing the maths 15, 7, 0). 😛 So, in my case, it was partly hereditary also. I used to apply kajal on my hair in school days, because I didn’t know the concept of hair color and didn’t want to dye my hair then. But the surprising thing is that it is jut one streak (right in the middle) along my head vertically. It has neither increased nor reduced till now.
