Grey Hair at an Young Age: Ask IMBB

Nandini Asks:

Hi,

I have a rather embarrassing problem :/ I just turned 24 and for the past year I have been getting a lot of grey/white hairs. I feel like going ‘nahiiiiiiiiiiiii’ dramatic Bollywood style – I’m too young to look old πŸ™ if that makes sense :P). So, I don’t know if it’s stress or the water at my place, but it’s really annoying to see so many whites and greys and they are ALL towards the front and very noticeable! I have tried Wella Kolestint but not only did it do nothing to the greys, but there was NO difference to my hair colour :/ I do not want to try henna, I don’t like the orange-ish tint it imparts. Any other suggestions? I really hate this πŸ™ also, my hair is wavy, slightly frizzy and brittle, so I need to keep that in mind too.

  1. curry leaves is wat treated my problem
took time in showing results but it did worked
i used curry leaves in hair oil n also increased intake of it.
i must say wen i tried eating it whole in food it wasnt tht easy but i found a solution to it. like in dals i added it while boiling n grinding dal so tht it gets grinded n just looks like coriander n no prob in gulping it down..
treat ur problem from within too..thanks to imbb for teaching me this πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  2. Please dont worry u have to keep taking natural things and applying henna … My daughter at the age of 7yrs she started having grey hair…she got long and very thick black hair… I worried a lot … Sometimes bcoz of genetics…. So u hv to keep not to spread and avoid chemicals…. Hv curry leaves and amla will help you….sometimes it is bcoz of absence of the melanin pigment in that particular area… You will be fine

  3. Hi Nandini, I have seen many girls with only a few strands of grey hair applying heena and getting good results out of it. Have you checked this post..https://makeupandbeauty.com/henna-for-hair-tips-and-usage/….the heena has not turned her hair orangish…..it colours it a deep burgundy color and conceals it. Many girls go to parlours to hide their few grey hairs, my friends used to do that while in college. The orange in the hair becomes apparent only when the henna tint starts wearing off.

Of course in the long run, consuming curry leaves along with dal and amla will definitely help. Hey, and you know, Pabatab BZ, Biotin, and other supplements will help your hair from greying further πŸ™‚

    1. Jomoooo :headbang: I hatehatehaaaate curry leaves gah!! I guess it’s taking revenge on me and I will have to take it πŸ˜› πŸ˜› I should also look at these supplements! Thank youu πŸ™‚

  4. Hi nandini. Some of my friends use henna.to.conceal grey hair. It gives a good coverage and looks natural. You can go to a dermatologist. He might be able to help you. They prescribe medicated shampoos and oils and supplements. definitely helps to some extent.

  5. hey nandini, i am 24 and ive had the same problem as well. i have about 20 grey hair all over my head, and hairfall and dryness as well. all that i have learnt is that melanin inhibition can be due to genetics, environmental factors like chemical poisoning(arsenic in water), bodily factors like thyroid problems or protein deficiency as well as stress. I have noticed that when I was especially stressed at one point of time i did get grey hairs almost instantly. remember that premature greying is rarely reversible. Plucking the hair out or cutting it won’t help because it will grow back again. i also hate that orange tint that natural henna gives. for now i am just trying to be okay with my grays, but they increase then i will definitely go for coloring. i think you should get a general medical check up as some underlying problem might cause your hair to gray or it can be a reaction to some long term medication. applying stuff to your scalp won’t really help in premature greying.

  6. Hi,

I too have this problem. I am taking curry leaves internally like in sambar, dal etc. Also I have started using dabur amla hair oil every day and it definitely helps. Start taking cod liver oil internally.

  7. Hey Nandini. A friend of mine has this problem and she uses Amla oil. Just make sure that if you decid to use Amla oil, do a test with the brands. Dabur Amla infects my forehead with acne to holy hell but the Bajaj one suits me. You should just check if you’re sensitive. And my friend also been using some homemade concoction with shikakai and stuff which has been useful but I am sorry, I don’t have the recipe. Maybe you could try googling it. And start eating amla every day. I’ve heard you get it in dried and powdered form too. It will prevent further greying.

    1. Amla eh..I like them πŸ˜€ I should start eating them everyday, I don’t want further greying :S Bajaj as in Almond drops?? I need to put oil properly again I guess. I’m also majorly stressed, I lost my Nani to cancer last year and it was around that time that I discovered this, plus now work stress etc. thanks Jabberwocky!

      1. Haha, good thing that you like Amla. I hate it. Guess I’d need to get my Vitamin C and black-hair-dose from elsewhere. πŸ˜› By Bajaj, I meant ‘Bajaj Brahmi Amla’ hair oil. I found it better than the Dabur Amla one. It’s got Brahmi and some other herbs in it. Also, you could infuse your oil with fenugreek seeds. This is something that my grandma used to do and it’s supposedly good for stronger, darker hair.

And I asked that friend for her shikakai potion recipe. You need to buy dried amla, reetha (soapnut) and shikakai from some grocery store. Soak about a handful of them (more shikakai, less reetha) in 500ml water overnight and boil it all the next morning. If you want, you can add some prepared black tea into the mixture before boiling too. Then cool and strain it. Do not wet your hair before applying it on. Also, you shouldn’t rub it into your hair like you do with the shampoo as it won’t lather. Let it soak into the scalp and hair for 5-10 minutes and wash it off. Then, you can follow with a non-silicon conditioner. You can also do a tea/coffee rinse as the last step for added shine. And yeah, wear some kind of protective gloves when you wash your hair and apply petroleum jelly on the hairline. This solution tends to stain the skin. And if you have oiled your hair, then increase the quantity of reetha. It removes the oil well then.

I’m sorry to hear about your Nani. I am not surprised that the stress is showing its effects externally like this. Do try to manage your work related stress a little, and your body will thank you in the long run.

  8. Thanks so much for your replies guys! Had the chance to see this only now. I haven’t ever chemically straightened my hair – other than that one box of Wella I haven’t gotten any treatments done πŸ˜› I am extremely stressed, so that could also be it, plus the water in my area is hard too. Would any of you girls recommend getting global colouring, like from Schwarzkopf or something? I used henna before, with coffee powder in it and it did nothing :/ they stayed grey and just made my hair dry.

    1. hey nandini, along with intake of curry leaves and amla… you can apply hair oil before shampooing … use a bit of sesame oil in your normal hair oil. This will show results in the long run… you have to follow the eating and oiling your hair very religiously.

    2. Nandini……in that case, go for coloring….the schkwaporf one because I have heard a lot about it….but to prevent further greying, you should take steps πŸ™‚

      1. Oh Schwarzkopf is good then? πŸ˜€ will go for it Jomooo :puchhi: yeah first I need to chill the…. out haha. Stress and hard water are major factors πŸ™

        1. Okay, this is a weird tip but my Dad applies this herbal henna from Khadi and he’s a real woman when it comes to taking care of his appearance. πŸ˜› So, to make sure that his hair stays soft, he adds a lot of silicon free conditioner to the henna mixture. Apparently, it prevents the brittle and drying effects that henna is notorious for. Maybe you could try that for your henna too, Nandini.
