How to Grow Long Bright Nails

Don’t all women love to have nice healthy long nails? Who doesn’t. Long bright nails are the “IN” thing since they are so attractive. A beautiful set of healthy white long nails are classy and sexy. They speak a lot on your confidence and style. Strange but true fact is that tidy bright nails are mirror to one’s personality. Seeking more information on that I found out that ladies with pink nails- pinkish and slightly projected- are fortunate ones. They are materially prosperous. Contrary to this, if the nails are rough, spotted and without lustre, tending to yellowish or whitish colour, the subjects are poor and addicted to corruption. Their lives are always full of scarcities, worries, mental agonies and they have their lives with uncertainly, according to “Bhavishya Puran.”

Anyway, I am not there to talk about nails and personality, I am here to write about tips and methods to achieve long bright nails.

My nails are very sensitive, they are prone to chipping and breaking easily because of constant use of detergents in the lab. Thus I have so far managed to maintain my nails on my left hand and the ones in the right hand… errr, no comments! you already saw their state when I posted the pic of my right hand nails on the blog when I was reviewing oriflame nail butter.

My nails tend to become transparent on the tips which looks weird and I also have hang nail problem due to lack of moisturization of the cuticles. These problems have been tackled bit by bit and at present my nails are fine but a bit negligence and I end up back to square one!!

Before we get onto the tips and methods, a bit of biology lesson about the nails:

Your nails grow from the area under your cuticle called the matrix. The matrix is the living part of the nail. Your cuticle is the layer of skin that protects the matrix so the cuticle is very important for nail health and growth. As new nail cells grow in the matrix, older nail cells are pushed out toward your fingertips and become hard and compacted. Heredity and health determine how fast nails grow but nails typically grow about 0.1 millimeter a day.

Tips for growing healthy and long nails

• Nutritional tips:
Drink plenty of water and other liquids.

sources of vitamin A for nails

Lack of vitamin A and calcium causes dryness and brittleness, take foods and drink rich in vitamin A and calcium. Drink fresh carrot juice daily (good source of vitamin A), this is high in calcium and phosphorus and is excellent for strengthening nails. They are also good for eye-sight (have you ever seen bugs bunny wearing glasses? hahahahaha… Bad Joke.. Sorry 🙂 ).

fruits vegetables

Eat a diet composed of 50% fruits and raw vegetables in order to consume necessary vitamins, minerals and enzymes. Eat food rich in sulfur and silicon such as broccoli and onions. A lack of insufficient zinc can cause development of white spots on nails.

• General tips and tricks for healthy nails:
BIG No to all those who use nails as tools! Don’t pick, poke or scrape with your nails, and especially avoid opening soft drink cans with your nails. Rather than using your nails use other parts of your hand, or a pen, to perform tasks such as dialing the phone.

gloves

This one is for me – YES TO GLOVES! YES TO GLOVES! Wear gloves while washing dishes or cleaning. Detergents are particularly harsh on your nails and can cause splitting and peeling. [ mentor ji !! please provide gloves in the lab for pretty dames like me 🙂 🙂 ]

emami malao kesar cold cream

Moisturise your Nails- nails need moisture just like your hands do. Rub lotion into your nails when moisturising your hands. Be sure to apply moisturiser each time you wash your hands. I am flaunting my Malai Kesar dibbi pic. Rati made many people jealous by putting up that new Estee Lauder cream. My Malai Kesar is just as good OKI! Hahahahahahahahahaha.

Look after your cuticles- The cuticle is a barrier that keeps bacteria from the nail matrix, where new cells are generated, so it should not be cut or trimmed. On the other hand you do want to keep cuticles from becoming overgrown, which suffocates nail growth. If your cuticle has grown out on to the nail plate, after sufficiently softening your cuticles in warm water, very gently use a cuticle pusher to push your cuticles back. As well as pushing your cuticles back this will help to remove dead skin and debris that may have accumulated. Hold the cuticle pusher at an angle, and use tiny circular movements, so that you are as gentle and careful as possible and do not damage the cuticle. When you have finished doesn’t forget to moisturize your hands.

garlic for nails

Apply garlic juice daily on your nails to give them a shine and strength.

olive oil for nails

Apply olive oil mixed with 3 drops of lemon to give your nails shine and to whiten your nails.

nail polish

This one is also for me- try not to remove or reapply polish more than once or twice a week, as it will dry out your nails. Choosing a remover with built in moisturizers will help limit the damage.

Remember it is better to apply lots of thin coats rather than one thick one; it will dry quicker and last longer. I abide this rule religiously. 🙂

If you have very brittle nails, trim brittle nails after a bath, or a 15 minute hand soak in bath oil, and then apply a moisturiser. Don’t use nail polish remover more than twice a month. Instead, touch up the nail polish. When you do need to use a nail polish remover avoid those that use acetone, which dries out nails. Also consider using a nail strengthener and growth formula.
