A Guide to Choose Between Hair Relaxing and Hair Rebonding

In today’s post, I will tell you about two most used chemical techniques to straighten the hair and control the frizz. Let’s do a comparison between Hair Relaxing and Hair Rebonding and you can decide for yourself which one do you want to go for according to your hair type and your budget. So, let’s get started.

Hair Relaxing

1. Chemical straightening, or hair relaxing, is the process of breaking protein bonds in the hair.
2. This procedure uses chemicals to straighten the hair by breaking down and reforming the hair’s components. The chemicals used in this process are usually lye-based like sodium hydroxide. Lye has a high pH level and is a strong alkaline. It may cause scalp irritation if it is left for too long but it can help straighten hair very quickly. Alternatively, one can also go for non-lye relaxers like guanidine hydroxide as well.

3. The treatment does not straighten the hair completely but rather tames the frizzy hair or soften very tight curls. The hair does not become straightened so if you are looking for that look then you do need to straighten your hair afterwards.
4. If you have really frizzy hair and want a cleaner look to the hair, then you may opt for this treatment. It will smoothen out the frizz and make the hair more manageable and straight but does not make it look too unnatural.
5. You need to go to a professional for this as bonds of the hair need to be broken and if too many bonds are broken, then the hair will go limp and if enough bond are not broken, then the hair doesn’t straighten out. The procedure, if done improperly, can cause scalp irritation and burning since it is applied at the scalp level.
6. Hair relaxation procedures are cost effective and do not take up a lot of time. It takes around 1-2 hour to the procedures.
7. The results may last up to 2-3 months. They won’t last too long unless you have very light waves but will save you from having bad hair days. Also you’ll need to touch up your hair every 6-8 weeks as new growth comes in.

Hair Rebonding

1. Hair rebonding is popularly known as thermal reconditioning and Japanese straightening. It is a chemical hair treatment that makes hair look straight, shiny and sleek.
2. Rebonding involves using a cream or relaxant softener to break the natural hair structure followed by a neutralizer to re-bond the structure again. A flat iron is also used to reset the hair bonds and make the hair straight. The chemicals used are usually a mixture of perming solution with strong chemicals such as ammonium thioglycolate, guanidine hydroxide or sodium hydroxide.
3. This treatment is ideal for very curly hair as it gives the look of poker straight hair.
4. It easily lasts for 6 months up to 1 year and depends on your hair type as well as how well you take care of your hair. If you use the right products and take good care of your hair then you can prolong the effects of rebonding.
5. In India price range of rebonding starts from around 5-6K which increases according to your hair type as well as the length of your hair. This process takes anywhere from 4-8 hours according to the length of your hair.
6. In the long run it is less damaging as you already have poker straight hair so you won’t need to style your hair using any hair tools but you do end up with weaker and limp hair. So use a shampoo and conditioner specially formulated for rebonded hair.
7. The above pro becomes a con as your hair is already chemically treated in the process so any other kind of heat will damage your hair. So, you will be stuck with straightened hair only and any other kind of heat styling will be really damaging for your hair follicles.
8. So go for this method only if you want poker straight hair and also if you can devote time and patience to care for them.
