Habits From My Teenage Years Which Makes Me Skip The Foundation

Hey lovelies!

This post is going to be a bit different than my usual posts. The idea for doing this post came to me yesterday when I threw away my bottle of foundation as it had expired. At first, I was sad because I had used the bottle only twice! But then I realized that I should rather be happy that I don’t need to use foundation. So, here I will be discussing whatever I have been doing since my teenage years (and even now) for skin care and make up.  A lot of you have been telling me how good my skin is and some of you might even have thought that it must be due to good genes only. I completely agree on the good skin gene part, but this post will tell you why only that is not the reason why I have problem-free skin now. I will be discussing the things which I did for skin care and make up back in my teens, and tell you how you can inculcate them in your routine too and enjoy the benefits.  Some of them may be already known to you and some might seem novel. Nevertheless, if you do follow the routine daily for a month, I can assure you can see the difference. Before I start, have a look at my picture.

This is my face just after I have cleansed and moisturized it. There is NO makeup at all. You can see that apart from slight uneven skin tone around the mouth and the side of the nose, the skin texture is otherwise even. So, I really can step out every time with just a dab of compact powder all over my face. But my skin was NOT like this from the beginning.

Believe it or not, I had oily skin in my teens which used to get tanned in seconds and worst part of all was that it used to tan unevenly. My forehead and the area around my mouth used to be two shades darker than my usual skin tone and the oozing oiliness made me look like a baboon (with all due respect to a baboon).  The woes didn’t end here, I had two or three pimples perennially on my left cheek. I didn’t believe my mother when she said that it will all pass away with time. Looking at my mum’s and sister’s flawless skin, I made it a point to do something to achieve the same skin. Since then (I was 14 then), I have been following certain tips which has helped me get the skin I want. For your convenience, I have listed out everything in a chart. Do take out time and have a look!

Now, for the makeup part! This part will be only for teens. Although, I am very much into makeup now, I had made it a point not to use too much make up in my teenage years. I used to yearn for it when I saw my other friends do so, but since good skin (and that’s too long term) was my first concern, I decided to wait for a few years. Nonetheless, what I did use and would suggest my teenage friends too are the following:

1. Nail polishes:  This is the time you can experiment a lot with nail colors. Go crazy with neon colors and everything bright and happy. But do remember to help your nail “breathe” for two days every week by using a buffer for exfoliating the upper dead cell layer.

Nail Polishes

2. Eye makeup:  The only eye makeup you would need at this age is one kajal pencil and maybe some colored eye pencils. I had only one brown eye pencil from Oriflame.  Anything more than that would add years to your face. Use the colored eye pencils for the eye shadow effect.

Eyeliner

3. Lip color: The only thing I used then were clear glosses. Bright or dark lip colors look good only after a certain age (I might be hated after this). You might try out pink lip creams or tinted lip balms. But keep it young!

4. Hair accessories:  Experiment with different kinds of cute hair clips like shown. It will help you retain the cool young factor.

Hair Clips

Avoid using foundations and compacts at any cost and spend on good sunscreens instead. You can buy your favorite foundation once you reach twenties. But if you skip it now, you can confidently step out without one when your friends will be worrying about the right shade of foundations in a few years.

So girls! All secrets spilled! Now, you know that it did require a lot of my efforts to get the skin I have and remind me if I have forgotten to add something. DIYs coming up next 🙂

  3. actually i can relate so much u know. before 16 i never even knew what toner was… and my mausi bought me my first toner from aroma magic which i never used, because back then i did not know what it did.. and the truth is i did not have single skin problem :/ no acne… no pimples nothing 🙂 clear smooth skin 🙂

from last 2 months i am suffering from small zits which came because of eye brow :/ :/ and is in love with me. >:(

    1. same pinch! 🙂 i toh used to think that toners are for older women 😛 but then skincare craze got better of me and ended up using rosewater and cucumber 🙂

  4. Very good post aparajita 🙂 agree with you completely!! i never used foundation until i was 23 🙂 my skin was sooo good till 23.. IMO teenage girls doesnt need foundation/concealer on daily basis as it will spoil the skin only 🙂

  5. As i always tell you Appy..Ur skin glows..man Ur one lucky girl..not all are blessed with such even skin…envy y you Appy….grt post…so nice of you to share this.

  6. Such a lovely post aparajita… I was so much able to relate to it 😀
I also had super oily skin which used to get tanned and from 15-17 age I got so many pimples and some how all on my nose (hated it) I used to apply sandalwood paste every night on them and sleep… it was like a ritual. I also used curd besan packs and cucumber juice for removing tan…. and like you even I didn’t knew much about makeup and cosmetics back then. I used to apply lipstick only for stage performances….. Ans I owned not even a single cosmetic till I was 21. Lactocalamine and Nivea lip balm were the only two things I used till then 🙂

I saw my younger sister using eyeliners, compacets & stuffs like that, sometime even mom asked me to try them out and I was like no I don’t like it…… And somewhere I feel because of those things only many times people misunderstand me for being the youger sister 😀 I am 27 now, still don’t need to wear foundation everyday, and I do not own any concealer yet (touch wood)

Wow.. it was a time traveling post for me…. love it !!

  7. What a lovely post????? reminded me about my moms words, my teenage then. thankfully I followed most but still could get strayed wid friend’s I mean tempted using cosmetics once in a while, But now I am 34 still I dont need a foundation, a compact with a BB cream does work during nights or evenings and a sunscreen is a must during the day.
But I swear when I was a teenager I used multani mitti with Orange juice or sandalwood pwd which helped remove extra oiliness and kept pimples away. touchwood I have or never had major pimples and no scars. still today I have clear complexion.
Must say DIY’s helped me a lot and I am following them since I was 18 or less.
..I have no major wrinkles but dark circles as was working night shifts for long, quit my job though..
Thanks for this article wud help most of them….
    Take care…. 🙂

  8. Great article Aprajita!! :woot:

  9. Appy thats a very nice post . I am waiting for your DIYs , I so love them .
Additionally , gimme your gtalk id . Talk to you some day 🙂

  10. very well written. and yes you have very beautiful & flawless skin (Dream of every Girl).

Mine teenage was full of Pimples, scars & pigmented skin. right skin routine does help in long way (CTM). after 20’s my skin is in control still it is oily but not like frying pan. and about Pimples it come & go but nothing stubborn. but yes i do have some old pimples marks.

    1. thanks gayatri 🙂 u know one of my closest friends was struggling with pimple marks since years! she had used many expensive products too but in vain. since last week she is applying Boroline on the marks before going to bed, and trust me, we see the marks reducing! 😀 try it!

  11. you know aparajita, i have followed most of these tips during my teenage years. I mean I might have fought with my mom during those years for being after me for everything and I cannot thank my mom enough for all her little tips and advices. these are just awesome tips. thanks for sharing. you do have lovely skin. :))

  12. REally wonderful article appu.. i also used to tell my cousins who are in teen to use more colors. this is the time to experiment.

  13. I always think while looking at your eye make up articles ‘This girl has beeeautiful skin’ . now i know why 😉 So basically – you used natural treatments , right ? i do that too – but still have no reached that place of ‘perfect skin’, hope fully soon.
Really nice tips – i am going to use the sandalwood and raw potato , starting today !

  14. Awesome post.. Nd also i can absolutely relate to this. My skin used to be dry and flaky in my childhood and early teens. Since den I’d started using glycerine wid dabur gulabari nd nothing else till 20 and now i have a flawless comlexion wid absolutely no skin problems.. 🙂

  15. Very nice post………..
but can anyone tell me , how to avoid sunburn i have tried most of brands like lotus , some medicated, ayur , lakme , now days i am usinf neutrogena
    but nothing works
i have very fair skin but 1 hr in sun makes be 3 4 shade darker and i get lots of sunburn marks
my skinn is very very sensitive it turns red even when wash with water only.
Pls any one help me….. pls pls pls
I use biotique pineapple facewash, biotique bio chlorophyll gel as moisturiser and khadi mint toner and sometimes i put khadi almond oil on my face
    Note:-my skin is superoily also.

  16. i can totally relate to this though i am older than you… i never used anything in my teenage years except a compact… i believe in minimalism and never fall for things like use sunscreen and lipbalm indoors and all that… like u whatever fruits i eat (except banana and grapes) i put on skin.. 🙂 There is no miracle in a bottle… then celebrities n millionaires wont have to do botox and facelifts..
Your hair and skin genes might be good.. but u need to take care.. thats a big fact..

also i do get breakouts like twice a year… but they are always on left side of face like you said…. why why..*headbang*. hi hi…
    You have glowing skin….

  17. Aparajita u are awesome. Ur skin is superb. I could relate to you for sandalwood thing as i use to do it on alternate days regularly till I reached 21. These tips are all very good.. Reminded me of my teenage 😀 :D.

  18. Awesome post and your skin
but pls can any one help to reduce after sun effects
i get lots of tan and sunburn , black spots
i have used all products lotus spf 20, 40 , 50 and neutrogena ,some medicated , ayur , biotique ,aroma magic .
but nothing works,i have very sensitive skin i turn red even after spashing water on it
    Please help.

    1. hey buds! if your skin is so sensitive that it turns red even on splashing water, i wd suggest u get professional help dear 🙁 raw potato juice might further irritate the skin as sensitive as urs

  19. Heyiee Appy ! you really do have a fabulously flawless skin & your eyes mashallah are too beguiling. The post is super valuable for teeny girls, i was wondering what a disaster i have been in my childhood, forget about skincare routine, i never knew if something other than the cold creams existed on the planet, I was a total tomboy and a careless freak, my mom constantly scolded for getting tanned in the sun and often said – tumse shadi koi nahi karega…:) 🙂 luckily i am blessed with an even skin tone and I souly thank my mom for this as I have inherited my skin type and features from her.

  20. great post n u have lovely skin 🙂
thankfully i dnt have the problem of acne or pimples didnt have it even in my teens, but as u wrote i get very oily skin n tanned on the foreheads 🙁 n ive hardly ever used face washes n my mom always makes me use home made cleansers like besan na lll
tell me, using milk is okay for oily skin? wont it make itmore oily?

    1. no poorva, raw milk can be used on oily skin too 🙂 its acts as a cleanser and mild bleach too 🙂 its the malai in boiled milk which creates prob for oily skin

  21. thanks anu 🙂 what i meant was, serums are used for intensive treatment right? so fruit pulp gives better results if used regualrly. u can use any fruit u want to- bananas, mangoes, chickoos, grapes, oranges, apples etc.. the list goes on 🙂

  22. thank you so much for the post…i am a teenager and i haven’t ever been into make up.To be honest ,i have felt inferior since puberty due reason of this, but yes i do love taking care of my skin and hair.i exercise and eat a lot of fruits. In school, whenever i eat fruits or salads….everyone’s like,OMG u are dieting to become slim…and i’m like no dear its just healthy. This has continued for years…but now, when we have become young adults , i can see the difference in my skin and body!
BTW you have LOVELY skin!!:) :*

  23. This is a great article, Aparajita! 🙂
I will try the potato juice for my tanned face, not that I’m against a tan, but I prefer my own color to the one I have right now 😀
And oh, about Boroline, my mom SWEARS by the stuff! She puts it all over her face, even on her lips, when she goes to bed at night, and has been doing so for the past 25 years or so, and her skin is pretty good for her age – people always think she’s my older sister or something 😛 However, my skin doesn’t take too kindly to it. I have generally problem-free skin, with the occasional zit maybe twice or thrice in a year. And when I was a teenager, my mom would actually force me to put Boroline on a zit everytime, since it works for her. And note that she hardly EVER gets zits. I only remember seeing one zit on her face during the past 3-4 years. Yes, one. She puts Boroline on her zit, and BAM! it’s gone.
Everytime I used it, mind you, every SINGLE time, I would breakout horribly. And a zit that would have gone away with minimal scarring always turned out to be pus-filled, and lasted for about a week, if I put Boroline on it, and yup, you guessed it, left a big, ugly scar.
So yeah, I will never touch that stuff to my face again. I tried it many times, over the years, but it never did anything for my face, and I have dry skin. It works quite well on body dry skin, though.
As Aparajita rightly said, oily-skinned people, stay away from it!
Btw, what is raw milk, Aparajita?

  24. you have a very beautiful skin Aparajita…. thanks for the tips… I am just lazy to follow but reading such articles does boost me for few days…. thanks again for the lovely tips

  25. I was such a careless teenager and had a lot of pimples but never touched them as i knew it would just make things worse …. the only face pack i used was multani mitti with rose water… i never used make up, no kajal nothing until i started working…. only lipstick and compact.. thanks to imbb and everyone i met here i knw something abt make up now… 🙂 just like u i also like to keep things natural.. i eat salads everyday and go for walks everyday for 45 minutes,…. i avoid oily food as i have to watch my weight… Well written article Aps… clap clap clap <3 😀

  26. Hey hi aparajita. Very nice post and helpful to for those who can’t spend much on cosmetics and wants to try every thing at home. Loved u r post. While reading this post was remembering my teenage how i used addicted to aloevera but i never knew that it works as serum :-):-) and one more thing u can add in u r chat is having luck warm water early in the morning which helps getting oil free skin which i do every day.

  27. ur posts reminds me of my teenage when i religiously follow my skin care routine like applying besan, doing ubtan, oil massage, ctm etc etc and now when these things are most needed, i become a lazy a**. i am trying hard to follow my skin care routine back. ur post is a reminder for me.

    hru nw….

  28. I wish i had someone like you to advise me in my teenage years. Never mind, will make it a point to follow whatever you’ve said. Thanks a lot Aparajita! And you skin looks FAB!! Simply staring at it! 😉

  29. AWw it`s so awfully honest. In teen years , such remedies indeed help. Never tried potato for detanning though. I prefer tomatoes but then i always end up eating them before i can do anything with those. 😛 hehe.

  30. first things first.u have uh-mazing skin.period.i never used to get so many pimples in my earlier teens but now in my 20’s my face looks like a battle field 🙁 i can very well attribute my tanning to the long hours playing in the sun or travelling in hot sun.that too in chennai without a sunscreen.only a few months got to know imbb and only from then started taking care of my skin.. and my skin is sorta okay now but uneven skin tone and dark spots still remain.as i have oily skin,u advised not to use boroline as well.any other suggestions? thanks for the great write up.that table sure reminded me of my chemistry tables 🙂

    1. clear up the pimples with sandalwood paste first 🙂 then follow up with boroline for the marks. i meant don’t use boroline all over face like i do if you have oily skin 🙂 u can use it just over the marks. make sure ur skin is clean before u do that 🙂

  31. Aww aparajita this is such sweet, honest and helpful post.. Thankfully my mum used to serve me lots of vegges and fruits in my teens still i was enjoying full on pimples and pimple marks till 20s… 😀 I never knew abt potato mask yaar i only used besan, clay masks and my mum healthy diet plan saved me from getting addicted to make up in my teens.. 😛 M to still novice in make up.. jo b thoda bahut h courtesy IMBB.. 🙂 I never applied foundation or concealer even till my marriage. I totally swear by all ur tips and ideas to stay away from all make up items. I feel even we may skip foundation today also.. 😛 if we follow all above things regularly.. 🙂 its a reminder for me too.. 🙂 great post dear!!

    1. thanks a lot neetu 🙂 true we may skip the foundation today also, coz sometimes a smiling face is all that matters 🙂 imperfections look good too if we have a genuine smile on our faces 🙂

  32. Hey Appy it is a lovely post 🙂 thanks for sharing and encouraging … u have amazzing skin 🙂 .. howz ur eye infection .. hope it’s fine now 🙂 ..tc

  33. Thank you so much for the post. Teenagers do need to understand the importance of skin. I am a 12 – year – old girl and take care of it daily. I apply suncreen everytime I step out the house. And the CTM routine is religion. 😉
