Hats For Indian Men

A few days I covered an ignored accessory for women- the scarf. Today I am going to cover one more ignored accessory, this time on the men’s section- the hat. The inspiration for this post came from the onerous movie “Anjaana Anjaani.” For all his pathetic acting, Ranbeer Kapoor dresses well (And I am sure he was the reason my wife dragged me to the horrendous movie, apart from Priyanka Chopra’s horribly applied foundation that is) and he invoked a long last desire in me- that of owning a hat. I have always wanted to wear a hat, along with point shoes, blue jeans, short, waist coat, and a scarf. Unfortunately, I have not seen many men wear hats in India so I am a little shy, but after watching the movie I came back to research about hats I can wear. And I found two types of hat I can wear and look cool without drawing too much attention. So here are two types of hats which I think Indian men can wear-

Newsboy Cap

The newsboy cap is a casual-wear cap similar in style to the flat cap. This one is my favorite. I am going to buy one or two for me in winters. Although this is traditionally a mens cap, it looks cool on women too! (see the images)

(A Little space filler historical nonsense) The style, very similar to a beret, was popular in Europe and the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries among both boys and adult men. As the name suggests, it is now associated with newspaper boys, and it is sometimes associated with wealthy golfers as well.

(Some no-nonsense space filler) If you are going to wear a newsboy cap you can also complement it with sacrves, sunglasses, distressed jeans, woolen sweaters etc. Of course you can even wear it with your jacket and look uber cool (That’s what I am planning to do).

Ok all you ladies (you cannot forget them on IMBB) some cool newsboy caps for you too. πŸ™‚

Fedora and/ or Trilby Hat

Remember Indiana Jones?

I read on the internet that the Fedora is the ‘King of Hats,’ the unspoken accessory of a three-piece suit. Well I agree. But it can also be worn as a casual hat. While researching on the internet I saw pictures of Trilby hats which looked similar to Fedora hats. So I started wondering. You might also be wondering what is the difference between a Fedora and a Trilby. Well, here goes- A trilby has a shorter brim which is angled down at the front and slightly turned up at the back. The fedora has a much wider brim which is more level. But for general purpose both the hats are the same; it’s Fedora in the US and Trilby in the UK. Remember that fedora is a part of formal attire, that is suit, jacket, collared shirts etc. Also, your hat should match with rest of the attire so do pay attention to the color of your formal dresses while buying a fedora.

So folks, here are some of the pictures that I have collected. If you have a husband or a boyfriend, do buy him the full attire this winter- boots, jeans, scarf, jacket waist coat and a hat. Teehee.

        1. Oh? But you have to send me your cap so that I find out the size of your head. What if I send you a fedora and you wear it and only your toes are visible? :rotfl: :rotfl:

  2. The newsboy hat for women in the first picture looks sooo good :-))
    Me want it…. :-((
yeah even i’d like to know where to get good hats in delhi ?:-)

    1. Deepika, you keep the hat in the picture, I’ll keep the rest… πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Read Jahnavi’s reply below… Let’s check out Zara. I also vaguely remember that there were some hats at Benetton or USI…will check out soon and update. πŸ™‚

      1. LOL.. i want that cap for real πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ yeah but exactly the same as in the picture….
even i saw some hats at Benetton i think..m not sure abt it though..

  3. I cant pull off a fedora but newsboy hats and berets are a staple (didnt know the exact name was newsboy hat, just knew they were a variation of berets )

Nice post again Sanjeev, n plz dont forget to post more quizzes, they are so much fun……

    1. Yep..quiz coming soon… to pander to everyone’s masochistic tendencies.

Hmm… I am going hunt for a scarf and a newsboy hat. I think it’s high time I change my wardrobe this winter. πŸ™‚

  4. I have this awesome newsboy hat, gorgeous leather in cherry red …. everyone I know thought it was funny when I wore it πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™ so I dont wear hats anymore..

Sanjeev – Zara for men has great hats, or they in June/July. I saw them in Mumbai but Im pretty sure Delhi has a Zara too ….. ?:-) ?:-) ?:-)

  5. I think a great part of wearing a hat, especially in India, is carrying it off. And if you pay attention to your friend’s laugh, you cannot carry it off. Be a little cocky πŸ™‚ A cherry red newsboy hat sounds good. Don’t know what the ladies here would say but open hair, red matching lipstick, your hat, and a purse might do the trick. πŸ™‚

    1. lol So true Devie – Newsboy hats remind me of …. you guessed it !!! Newsboys !!!!!! – or Italian Peasants from the Bicycle thief or even the Il Divo guys when they did the music vid for Regresa Mi

      1. Hihihihihihihi, actually I saw lots of newsboys caps in Italy, and none of them looked peasants. But hey, it’s your choice. As for me, I am going to be the newsboy. πŸ˜€

      2. Omg J :rotfl:
Somewhere in my head I can hear “Extra, Extra, hear all about it…fedoras make a man look fit” (yeah totally pardon that rhyme πŸ˜› )
Never thought I’d hear an Il Divo reference here πŸ˜›
And you’ll kill me when I tell you this – I’ve never watched Bicycle Thief…not even once :wilt:

        1. Rati and I did, with subtitles. Thought the end was too abrupt. I am all for good movies (have nearly watched all of AFI top 100) but I think bicycle thief is overhyped.

              1. Sanjeev do you LIKE watching all these depressing films ?!

Im more than happy to sit at home and watch Meet me in St Louis πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

              2. Yes, seen both. Both elicited different reactions form me though.
Dances With Wolves was a beautiful story but honestly Kevin Costner always seems to put me off for some reason. I actually liked The Last Samurai (a similar but more inferior script imho) better than DWW because of my actor bias.
One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest was a weird movie for me. Weird in the sense that I never experienced a piece of cinema that made me so happy and sad at the same time. Too bad Priyadarshan failed so miserably with his version of it :((

        2.     Love that Rhyme !!!!!!!!! Its stuck in my head now !!! πŸ˜•

Lol Il Divo were hot and then suddenly they were not – coz they refuse to move beyond covers πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™

Watch the film – just to avoid the 😯 ……. but its one of those super depressing films, makes you want to kill yourself over the sadness of life types …. they call it great cinema but its not my cuppa :coffee:

          1. I think its the other way around D –
JT makes the Newsboys look Hot πŸ˜› πŸ˜› πŸ˜›

Just like he did with skinny ties …. on most other men those are kind of really lame

            1. Man I’ve never found JT hot…
I tend to like men with darker hair and bigger brains.
Not to say he’s not smart (he’s a very astute businessman), but eh I’ll pass…he’s all yours πŸ˜›

              1. Darker hair and bigger brains – are we talking Robert Downey Jr/ Johnny Depp ? or just Tony Stark – Sexy Scientist turned Superhero 😯

JT just makes stuff look hot – you know like when he did Sexy Back – although his taste is questionable – he dated britney 😯 😯 😯 😯

                1. Think: Christian Bale, yes, RDJ, James McAvoy, Shashi Tharoor (ok, that was thrown in there was diversity :P), did I say Christian Bale?

                  1. Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom but only as :pirate:

 Britney…in JT’s defense she was everybody’s dream girl back then!

                  2. OMG You like Shashi Tharoor tooo – I was soooo droooooling when I heard his Ted talk on India and Globalisation – His voice *sigh* *sigh* *sigh*
   to Christian Bale and RDJ

                    James McAvoy – He’s all yours !!!!! πŸ˜‰

                    1. Haha so I’m not the only Ted nerd on here too :))
Yes his voice is :inlove: and he has great hair too *swoon*
And staying on the topic of :cowboy: ‘s I think he’d rock them!

  6. love newspaper boy caps!!!!but somehow they never look good on me!!round face you see πŸ™ but it looks smashing on my bf though!!there was this phase right after the sherlock holmes movie he would try every newspaper boy caps he could!!
