Health and Beauty Benefits of Flaxseed Oil

Exactly a month after I got married, we shifted to our new flat and while adjusting things at our new home, I got a treasure which was a waste for me at first sight. It was a big container filled with flaxseed. It is widely used internally and externally for N number of health and beauty applications. The seeds come in two varieties, one is golden yellow and another is dark brown colored. The dark yellow is a little lower in omega-3 fatty acids which is the main content of flaxseeds. The one I have is dark brown.

After I googled out its benefits, I immediately called up my mom to get a big bottle of flaxseed oil from our native. Although my husband advised to try out a smaller quantity first, I knew I was not going to regret my decision. Still somehow, my husband managed to send a telepathic message to my mom and she just got a small bottle of home-made flaxseed oil.

So, here are some of my experiments with the oil, which although a bit slow but gave awesome results:

Flaxseed For Hair

I have oily hair and since I have started with my job, my hair has got me several awards for frizziness and fly aways, and it has become wavy and totally unmanageable. I feel the need to wash them every alternate day. Although my mother-in-law scolds me like hell for this saying that I will not have a single strand left on my head when I grow old, I can’t spend my day with that all greasy feel on my head, but since the time I have started oiling my hair with this miracle potion, I go without washing my hair even for three days . This is because the oil locks moisture in the hair strands and controls the oil secretion from the scalp. Not just this but I miss my small fly aways that are now gone. My hair is now much more manageable, soft and shiny even after three days of shampooing.

Flaxseed For Body:

It’s my brother’s marriage next month and I guess more than his bride, I am the one who is preparing for the marriage. Before my marriage, I was using my mom’s home-made ubtan of besan, milk powder, haldi and multani mitti from my native (they say they add all the herbs like chandan etc., to it).  I started using this pack a month back, but just to experiment, I added flaxseed oil to it, and the results have been to die for. I don’t need to use moisturizer even while sitting in the cool and drying environment of AC in the office all day. My body is much more smoother and glows in the sun.  It also acts an anti-tan pack, so I get to save a lot on my sunscreen.

Flaxseed For Face:

After trying it in my body pack, I was hellbent sure that it would help with the occasional zits on my face and keep me away from my strawberry nose, but I was a bit skeptical about using it on my face as I have an oily skin. I used the oil in my face pack of besan and curd. Although it didn’t create any miracles, it prevented from further damage. My acne marks are now gone, I don’t get the oily feeling on my face all day and the skin looks attractive. I use the face pack at night, wash it and sleep without putting on a moisturizer as I feel the skin needs to be left fresh at night. I still get up all clean, without feeling the oil on my T-zone.  All in all, I am loving what it has done to my face and because now I can tell my mom that I don’t necessarily need a facial before my bro’s marriage.

Miscellaneous Health Benefits of Flaxseed Oil:

Some miscellaneous findings from Google:

• Although my mother-in-law told me that it increases weight, Google uncle told me that in US, it’s majorly used in weight loss programs. Flaxseed oil plays a significant role in fat burning and thus, helps to maintain a healthy body weight.
• You can add the seeds to milk after powdering them and give it to your grandparents. Trust me their knees will always thank you for this as the omega-3 acids in the oil reduces the risk of blood clot formation and inflammatory disorders like rheumatoid arthritis.
• One major reason for making this your best dietary friend is it helps to regulate the menstrual cycle, balance the progesterone levels and reduce menopause problems such as sleep difficulties, headache, anxiety, mood swings, breast cysts, etc.
• Flaxseed oil can be used to treat various women’s health problems such as premenstrual syndrome, menstrual cramps, pre-menopausal symptoms, endometriosis and female infertility. It can also improve uterine function and health.

In a nutshell, the daily intake of flaxseed oil definitely has many positive effects on women’s health.

I hope the information proves to be helpful to you, and also sorry if you found it a bit lengthy as this being my first article on IMBB, I was super excited to blurt out everything and give away all the information I had.

  3. Oh, I take flaxeed supplements almost every day… And my skin has never been better :)) Also, even Cod liver oil capsules can be used if flaxeeds r unavailable.. They have a high content of omega-3 as well n can quite substitue flaxeed supplements.. :))

      1. Yes. Since Cod liver oil is easier to find, u could take those too (Beware: the smell is just too HORRIBLE). I strongly suggest capsules if u wanna take them as supplements.

  12. Information-packed article @ Nutrient-packed wonder called Flaxseeds..Archana  We do use flaxseeds powder on regular basis in salads..as for us vegetarians its biggest source of Omega-3 fatty acids.
