Today, I will be writing about a face pack that I have been using for a while now and feel has improved the condition of my skin and even helped me lighten the dark spots and prevent the ones developing under the skin from surfacing.
The face-pack uses something that Malyalis swear by for their skin, Kasturi Mannyal (Turmeric, this is different from the one that is used for cooking and you could either ask a Keralite to get it for you or scan your local kirana for it. I got my supply from the yearly trade fair that takes place in Delhi and that is how I got to know about its healing properties.) And red sandalwood (again brought from a Keralite’s stall in trade fair, if you happen to live in Andhra you could easily find it and could always try your local kirana stores).
Red Sandalwood or errachandanam, as it is locally referred to in Telugu has been used in beauty regimes of women since times immemorial. Traditionally, it was used as an astringent, a cooling agent, disinfectant, or diuretic. A decoction of wood is helpful for external skin problems, especially those of bacterial origin. It also helps get rid of bruises and lightens them, as it improves local circulation.
When it comes to more common skin-related problems, it is helpful in reducing the occurrence of pimples, acne, rashes, blemishes black spots and is a good exfoliator for getting rid of sun-tan.
Face-packs made using red-sandalwood prevent pre-mature aging of skin and occurrence of wrinkles.
Red-sandalwood can also be used as a hair-cleanser.
Ingredients for the face-mask:
2.) Turmeric; Make sure you use the kind used for beauty purposes not the one used in cooking. The turmeric will increase the benefits you reap out of this pack. It has long been known to delay maturing and aging of skin. It helps get rid of sun-tan and reduces occurrence of pimples as it reduces oil-secretion by sebaceous glands.
3.) Raw-Milk; Not only will it act as a moisturizer but also add to the benefits of the main ingredients. Raw milk has cleansing properties and rejuvenates and cleanses the skin without being too harsh on the skin.
4.) Honey; It moisturizes and revives the skin, along with clarifying it. The enzymes in it keep pores clean and the anti-bacterial properties prevent bacterial build-up, in turn preventing skin imbalances and break-outs. It lightens skin and hep get rid of scars due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties that are known to help in the tissue-regeneration and the healing process of the skin.
5.) Multani Mitti or Fuller’s earth; It helps to remove dead skin, improving the texture of skin by letting it breathe. It helps to make skin more radiant by removing acne and blemishes and has been the saviour of ladies with oily skin for ages. It unclogs pores preparing it for after-care, and helps in better absorption of creams and serums.
- Take a bowl and put in a table-spoon of fullers earth and red sandalwood.
- Add two table-spoons of Turmeric and mix well.
- Next, add raw milk to a consistency of your liking, preferably it should not be too runny or too thick. Mix well, this might take a while; ensure you don’t leave any lumps.
- Next, add a table-spoon of honey and the concoction is ready for use.
I use the face-mask once every week and leave it on for half-an -hour. It is suggested that one does not laugh or speak while the face pack is on. Relax with some cucumbers over your eyes.
