Holi Skin and Hair Care Tips

We all know that the colours that are commonly used in Holi have a lot of toxins and damage-inducing chemicals in them, but the knowledge is not enough to dampen our festive spirit. Here are some things to do before leaving your room in the morning of the colourful day.

Here are some pointers:

    • Regardless of what you might see in bollywood movies and television celeb’s holi parties, the best thing you can do for your skin on Holi is to wear full clothes. A full-sleeved t-shirt with full-length pajamas or full-sleeves salwar kammez are the best bets.

    • Apply a great amount of moisturiser in the exposed parts of your skin. This will form a thin layer on your skin and prevent the colours from reaching the deeper layers. It will also help in easily washing off of the colours afterwards. Alternatively, you can also use almond, tea tree or olive oil for the same. My friend who has a very sensitive skin, especially on her face, was advised by a dermatologist to wear a layer of foundation on face and neck before playing holi and it worked for her. The colours came out easily and no damage was done. I am not suggesting that this will work for everyone with sensitive skin, but you can always consult your doctor on the same.

    • It also important to protect yourself from the sunlight. Some chemicals found in synthetic colours together with the ultraviolet sunlight can cause a “photo-toxic” reaction on your skin. Therefore, apply a good coat of waterproof sunscreen with at least SPF30. Also, put a generous coat of lip balm or Vaseline on your lips.
    • Post-holi, take a bath with cold water to remove all the colour stains. Never wash off skin with soap after playing holi as the chemicals in the soap can react with chemicals in the colours. Therefore, use natural and homemade products to take a bath as far as possibleWaqt
    • A paste made from besan, turmeric powder and milk or sandalwood powder with milk and lime juice can be applied before taking a cold water shower.
    • Your hair tend to get damaged the most after Holi. It is very important to take proper care of your hair before and after playing holi. The time-tested idea of oiling your hair before playing holi definitely works. Head massage with warm olive oil or coconut oil works well. After holi, turn your head down and massage it thoroughly, but gently to remove all dry colours. Then shampoo using a mild shampoo. Conditioner afterwards is a must, although a deep conditioning hair pack is advisable. You can mix olive oil and honey to deep condition at home. This works well for all kinds of hair.

Olive Oil

    • Another post-holi problem are the dry and brittle nails. To avoid stubborn colour stains on nails, apply multiple coats of nail booster or nail polish before playing holi.

Hope you duck all the water balloons thrown at you. Smear your loved ones with natural colours and have a wonderful Holi!!

  1. Nice tips:

Here are tips what not to do : :nonono: :nababana:

Last year I played holi for the first time in my life. After I went home, I wanted to get rid of every color to be ready for a meeting for next day. Guess what I did – I bathe with RIN. Ragad-Ragad ke. Result – I had blisters all over my face. :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

No Meeting (anyone) for next 20 days ! :headbang:

      1. Yeah, It worked in my bachpan too! πŸ˜‰

Lekin ab main badi ho gayee hoon, aur iss RIN ke episode ko as a “will work” lene lagi – Lekin RIN bada hua hi nahin – Aur meri Band baj gayeee! :headbang:

        1. i nnow.. now toh i cant even dare to. 😐 😐 😐 i remember exams used to fall during holi days .. now between holi and exams there is actually not a choice. πŸ˜› So rin ki safedi :victory2: I’ll never tell this to my kids. :hihi: :hihi: :hihi:

  2. Great tips !!
Won’t work for me though…my husband and his friends are super intelligent..they keep shampoo sachets in their pockets and give everyone a nice wash to get rid of all the oils and moisturizers..and then play holi :headbang:

  3. Thanks everyone.. I’m glad you guys liked it!!
I would also add one more thing here..using sunglasses also help. Your eyes also need protection from the chemicals in the colours.

  4. Apt article    … Another tip that can be used is to get organic colours safe for kids. certain babyshops and specialized baby products online shops carry the same. Wishing one and all a happy and safe holi

  5. I toh soak myself in oil from head to toe. πŸ˜› and i paint my nails in all wacko colors. has always worked. :woot: :woot: :woot: :woot: :woot: :woot: :woot:

  6. Perfectly timed & detailed article.. We have a Big Holi Bash coming up on 10th March.. πŸ™‚ We (have to 😐 ) dress up in a decent way for our yearly Holi Events..as we celebrate it with around 100 ppl.. :haanji: But once back home…1st thing I do is..rub my skin with gallons (Ok Ok..thoda zyada ho gaya :silly: ) of Nivea/Dove Body lotion & wait for a while before taking a shower & rinse hair with plain water & bit of conditioner to take out the powder thingy. Then oil hair profusely (I oil on shaft only…in general) & shampoo next day.. πŸ™‚
