Home Remedies For Common Ailments

Do you pop on Aspirin the moment you feel the onset of a headache? Are you the one who reaches for an allopathic ointment when you have a backache? Don’t. There are several simple and easy natural remedies available right on your kitchen shelf, which you can safely use to combat common ailments. Right from grandmother’s remedies, here are a few for you to try out.

Itchy Skin

Apply grated potato juice on the itchy area of the skin.

Burns

Apply a cut potato or break an egg over it.

Infected Wound

Apply turmeric paste on it, it works as an antiseptic.

Bee Sting

Onion for common ailments

Apply onion juice for immediate relief.

Diarrhea

Banana for common ailments

Take a banana. It’s high potassium content is beneficial for the patient.

Toothache

Clove for common ailments

Put a chewed clove in the cavity or apply clove oil near the tooth for instant relief.

Cold

Tulsi for common ailments

This is the common problem, which most of us have, especially during monsoon. Take honey along with a couple of tulsi leaves.

Lice

Apply a paste of tulsi leaves on the scalp, the lice will flee.

Cut

Dab a bit of honey on a new cut to disinfect it.

Blister

If you have a blister, soak a washcloth in milk and hold it on for 15 minutes.

Tea

If you have athlete’s foot, soak your feet in tea. Fill a bowl with a litre of boiling waterand add 6 tea bags ( or 6 teaspoons of tea) . Let the water cool down, and then soak for half and hour or so. Its tannic acids sooth the itch.

Tea also soothes a blister. Chill a steeped tea bag and apply to the area.

Headache

Rub a diluted mixture of peppermint and eucalyptus oil to the forehead.

Sunburn

Tomato for common ailments

To treat sunburns, add 2 teaspoonfuls of tomato puree to 2 tablespoonfuls of buttermilk. Mix well before applying on sunburnt areas. Wipe off after half an hour with water.

Damaged Hair

Massage warm olive oil regularly.

Dandruff

Lemon for common ailments

Apply lemon juice on the scalp, leave on for half an hour then shampoo.

Falling Hair

Apply Almond oil every night and shampoo next morning. Strained tea leaves are very effevtive in preventing hair from falling. Take about 6 cups of strained tea and wash hair with it.

Banana

Ripe mashed bananas can be used to nourish hair.

Dirty Hair

To clean hair thoroughly, make a thick solution of gram flour (besan) and water in the ratio of 3:4 and strain it through a piece of muslin. Let your fingers rub this well into the hair and wash after 8-10 mins.

Brittle Nails

Soak them in warm olive oil or almond oil.

Tired Feet

To refresh tired feet, soak them in hot water to which some lemon juice has been added or rub a wedge of lemon over them. If you have foot odour, add lemon to hot water and soak your feet in it.

Coffee

Recent studies reveal that coffee can protect your teeth against decay.

Hive Attack

For soothing relief of all over the body hive attacks, try a cool bath in which 1 cup oatmeal has been mixed. For spot therapy, mix cornstarch with white vinegar and pat it on.

Tired Eyes

Put a slice of cucumber on closed eyelids and lie down in a dark room for 15 minutes. The eyes get an instant sparkle and quick relief.

Sandalwood

Pure sandalwood paste or powder brings relief from itchy skin and allergies. A powerful antiseptic , it soothes and cures inflammation and rashes.

Ayurvedic Herbal Oils

They relieve stress and strain and also improve blood circulation and aid in digestion.

Losing Weight

The juice of a lemon mixed with 2 tsp of honey in lukewarm water taken first thing in the morning helps in slimming down.

Prickly Heat

Apply crushed neem leaves for relief. Neem also reduces acne.

Skin Ailments

Crush and keep mint leaves in hot water, cool and use for soothing skin ailments.

Cracked Heels

Massage ‘malai’ (milk cream). It helps soften and heal.

Rose

It tones the cappillaries, improve blood circulation and has a calming effect.

Scars

Aloe vera speeds up the cell renewal process and has a healing effect on scar tissue.

Neem

It is nature’s own antibiotic and has particular benefits for the skin. It soothes eruptive conditions while its organic sulphur compounds have a powerful healing action on irritable skin.

Thus our kitchen shelf is loaded with ingredients, which can help us to lead a more healthy life. Pure, natural and free from chemicals, these age-old remedies can be effectively tried for common ailments.
