Sampada Asks:

Hi, I am Sampada. I am 30 years old and pregnant right now. I also have a son of 3 years old.

Would like to have some suggestion for my hair. I am facing a dandruff problem tremendously; my hair is too dry and frizzy. As i told you I’m pregnant I can’t use any harsh chemical. I have gray hair also but less than 25%. My hair problem started after my marriage when I shifted from Borivali (Mumbai – My mom’s place) to Virar (Thane – Husband’s place) where the main cause was water, at Virar there is hard water. we stayed at Virar for 5 years and have now shifted to Andheri (Mumbai) but during this period my hair has been damaged very badly. Previously I never had dandruff problem. Because of dandruff I am also facing a pimple problem on my neck and back and some on the face also. The hair fall has reduced a bit after shifting to Andheri compared to Virar.

I have been reading your blogs for many years and thought of using some of the products reviewed on the site but I am not confident and do not want to damage my hair more by experimenting something.

Can you suggest me any home hair pack or readymade hair pack which can treat my problem…..

  1. Heyyyy take some soap-nut soak in water overnight…. nxt day mrng remove d seeds in it, along with soapnut add some fresh aleo-vera and hibiscus leaves(preferably red hibiscus leavs) grind it into nice paste… apply to ur hairs n scalp nicely… n leave for 1hr or so… then wash it with any mild shampoo… if u don’t use shampoo also it would be fine… as soapnut has lathery consistence.. can do this daily… its very helpful will reduce hairfall, dandruff, also gives ur hair a very nice look.. :))

this is tried n tested… :)) i do it weekly once.. just to maintain my hairs well….
my dad had dandruff very badly… i made him use this weekly thrice his dandruff is 50%reduced… he has been using this from past 2 weeks dats all… :))

hope this helps u out.. :))

uffff such a long comment.. 😉

  2. hello sampada.dandruff is basically shedding of dead skin cells of scalf.it is a fungal infection.so u have to use anti dandruff shampoo twice a week.and on regular basis use a very mild shampoo to clean scalp .wash ur hair atleast thrice a week.hair packs wont b of much use.because u hve to treat first the cause which is fungal infection.if u hve excessive dandruff then do consult dermatologist.because during pregnancy our hair tend to fall more and on top of tht if u hve dandruff then this will worsen the condition.

    1. totally agreed wd Shraddha…consult a dermat n use a ketoconazole shampoo..nothing works better n this won’t affect ur pregnancy in any way..
if you really want to try natural remedies…lemon juice in coconut oil works on me

  3. An age-old recipe is the congee of boiled rice (the starchy water). Just boil rice on the stove with extra water, and when the rice is nearly cooked, start removing the sticky water and save it. Use this as a shampoo when you wash your hair. HTH 😉

    1.  Aruna, my friend swear by this.. she is a keralite, she use shampoos only on spl occasions, rest of the time she use shikkakai + Congee to wash

  4. oil your hair one night before washing your hair..and next day massage your hair with lemon juice..then wash with anti dandruff shampoo…simple ..!!

  5. Home packs are really worth trying.. but they catch cold soon.. As u r pregnant and u have a toddler son, it is better to avoid those..
Better consult a derma and seek help.. A mild cleanser like cetaphil and anti acne medicinal creams would recover u soon from pimples..
Regarding dandruff make sure you go for oil massage before every shampoo and make sure ur scalp is always clean.. TBS anti dandruff shampoo and Dhadri hair oil helped a lot to get rid of dandruff.. I used anti dandruff shampoos and conditioners when I was pregnant.. I dont think that would cause u any prb as long as u rinse properly and no residue left on ur scalp…
Go for good balanced diet; if u lack proteins, the body would take it from ur hair; this happens mostly during pregnancy.. That’s why we have more hairfall during and after pregnancy..
    Hope this helps.. :))

  6. u can use mixture of 1 cup fat free yoghurt + 1 lemon mix & apply for 1 hour at least.. do this weekly… it’ll nourish ur hair givin milk protein too… use extra virgin oils lik figaro for olive n dabur or roghan badam shirin for scalp massaging… there will be a considerable reductn in hairfall… use henna pack once in 15 days to thicken ur hair… n yeah hav sprouts like soyabean, groundnut, urad n moong dal, chana soaked in water… it’ll give protein n fibres also for good digestion which cleanses system well…add some salt lime tomatoes etc for added benefits n taste… have nuts like almonds n yeah dates…i follow this n its suiting me well… hope it helps..

  8. Hi Sampada, wish you a lovely pregnancy.

There are some things that you can definitely do, which are so completely herbal too.
Herbal pack 1- Mix tulsi leaves, hibiscus leaves, and methi paste (made by grinding methi that has been soaked for a few hours, overnight is best). Add some warm water to make a paste. Apply and wear a shower cap, so all the goodness of herbs is absorbed better due to body heat. Laxmi has a point about risk of catching a cold increasing, so make sure you use warm to hot water in making packs. In fact if the pack cools down, just warm it in microwave and apply. Wash the pack off with warm water. Do not shampoo after the pack, if you must , shampoo the next day. Hibiscus leaves and methi help control hair loss, and improve hair texture, tulsi leaves are anti bacterial , anti fungal and also helps fight cold.

Herbal pack 2- Boil dried reetha, amla and shikakai in water. Add 2 tablespoon henna, 1 tablespoon bottle gourd juice (lauki), and if your hair is dry, add 1 tablespoon coconut milk. Apply this , let dry for half an hour to an hour. Wash off.

Also ask your doc if you can eat some amla, you can have it in pickles, preserves (maharashtrians have something called moravla- which is amla in sugar syrup), or even dried powder in warm water. amla is the biggest detox herb ever. but for tht just take a go ahead from your gynaec. the packs u can use regardless.
