Homemade Hair Conditioner: Ask IMBB

Hi,

I have a query regarding hair conditioners.  The normal hair conditioners available in the market do not suit me, so I want something natural (specifically homemade).  My hair is dry and getting dull nowadays.  I have also had hair fall from some time.  I started using Kaya Gel and Shampoo more than a year ago and it worked for me. The hair fall reduced, but then, I was too bored of the same regimen every alternate day and wanted some change.

So, I bought two shampoos from Khadi (one includes lemon and the other amla) and the hair fall started again. :((   But the texture was already better because of Kaya and Khadi products.

Recently, a friend suggested Body Shop Rainforest Volume Shampoo and I am using it currently.  The hair fall has reduced comparatively though has not subsided completely.  For conditioning, I would use the below:

  • In a mug of water, add 2 drops of hair oil that you use and squeeze half a lemon juice.

This conditioner however is making my hair dry again and I could see one gray hair. This worried me a lot and I have stopped it.

Could you please suggest me some good homemade conditioners that can be used every alternate day (as I shampoo 3 times a week)?  Also, I am going to try vitamin E for my hair (mixed with mustard oil).

Please help me on this one.

  1. Mysha, before shampooing apply curd to ur hair and scalp n leave for like 30 minutes… wash it off n shampoo as usual 🙂
also, u can apply egg pack to ur hair, it conditiones and adds shine both…
Henna pack(henna+curd+egg or plain henna in water) conditiones hair too 🙂 but dont keep it for more than 30-40 mintues 🙂
    hope thz help

    1. i totally agree. Curd is a wonderful conditioner. i have used it with henna and by itself too. have never tried the egg pack becos of the smell mostly but i believe thats wonderful too. Dove and Livon have wonderful conditioners too (but thats not home remedies) :stars:

      1. Aruna, i hate the egg smell too but i love the shine it gives
i now add few lemon drops , lavender oil in the egg pack..it doesnt smell dat bad then O:) O:)

    2. Thanks Nupur
I am going to try the curd now & henna pack as well once a week :jiggy1:
The henna is to be done before shampoo or after shampoo n just rinse after 30-40 minutes?

Actually, I was looking for a quick solution like the lemon wala i mentioned above. it doesn’t take time for me to prepare/ keep it. I leave for office early morning & prefer shampoo in morning not evening. So if u have anything that can adjust with the timings, it would be great. :hugleft:

      Thanks for the tips though,
      Mysha

      1. i read in a magazine once that if u dillute half glass of milk wid some water n after shampoo just pour it on ur scalp/hair, leave it for like 1-2 minutes and wash off then that conditiones hair lightly too…. u can try this too…wont take much time :victory2:

        1. hey nupur , i tried this tip, and it does work very well.. btw do add a fragrant oil, such as lavender or rose in the mix as milk can start smelling funny on your scalp if you go out in the heat too much.. it gives off a sour milk kind of smell. but a drop of lavender remedies the smell problem so well.

        2. Yep..im goin o try this too…for the last week i was on vacation & used curd for the hair twice. It worked well & i am goin to continue using it 🙂

  2. Why dont you try hibiscus plant leaves. Collect 10-15 of the leaves, wash well and grind with some water. This will form a gooey paste. Use this paste on your hair after shampoo. Leave on for about 10 minutes and then wash off. It is a very good natural conditioner.

  3. Hi Mysha,

As for i know aleo-vera is a good conditioner for hairs.. remove d outer part and apply only d gel before shampooing and leave for 30 to 40mins n den wash it…
also i use modicare conditioner… it is very much suitable for my hairs..

@Rati/jomol : so far i have not noticed a single review from modicare products, they have a very good variety of products n most are herbal and also good…
u all can give a try.

      1. yeah u can get those products through der agent only…
i got to know from one of my relative… also mom has a membership…
can i do d review on products wat i use from them…. i have found it giving a very good result..

    1. Meenakhsi, Aroma Magic Products are easily available across counters in Delhi…. u can check Bigbazars too, but i dont think u ll find it in mall counters.. u ll have to check local shops and even some chemists stock it

  4. Few drops of jojoba oil/olive oil in water as last rinse.
Have you tried Biotique Watercress conditioner?
If conditioners dont suit you you should invest in a good leave-in conditioner or serum so that you can skip conditioning and still manage your hair.
    :pigtail:

    1. Yep..i have been using olive oil for a while now…& leave in conditioners i have just read a recipe on IMBB so will be trying that… 😉

  5. 1. curd + lemon juice

    2. thick coconut milk

    3. aloevera juice – but firstly roast aloevera on gas like papad and then remove aloevera juice and use.

    4. Hibiscus / Shoe-flower – Make a paste of these flowers with their leaves apply all over scalp and hairs.

5.Make hairs damp and apply any suitable conditioner on sections and wrap hair section with aluminium foil one by one keep for 1/2 hr and then wash off. this is not home remedy but then any conditioner works really well with this method.

i hope it will be useful to you. :pigtail:

    1. i do agree with prachi joshi… even hibiscus is good for hairs…. the white hibiscus flowers along with the leaves.. grind and apply the paste to hairs… u can also add the aleo-vera to it….. and wash it with soapnut powder and shikakai powder….. 🙂

  6. Hi Mysha…

Hairfall might be due to health issues also… So try to check if ur health is fine… Excess heat, iron defeciency ,lack of protein… the list could keep going on.. Try to consult a dermatologist, so she can suggest you better products based on your scalp and hair texture.

I’ve been using coconut milk once in a week.. I leave it on my hair for about 45 mins.. And wash it off regularly. Preferably dilute the shampoo… Or you can try a leave on conditioner. squeeze few capsules of vitamin e in the leave on conditioner/ serum whichever you use.. also try to check out which ingredient is drying out your hair. There is an article by samantha “ingredients in shampoo and conditioners”… its great.. you can try reading it also.. and experiment if you wish to..

Last but not the least tip… Don’t use lemon for your hair. My grandma, always tells.. No lemon on head.. It’ll grey your hair.. But i never listened to her. And now I’ve a bunch of grey hair.. 😥 😥
To get rid of those i’ve been using amla powder + coconut oil boiled and filtered. its hardly a month for me to see the results.. SHould be used regularly to see results. But i look like an oil can even if i apply 2-3 drops of oil, as my hair is very fine. So i use it on alternate days before hair wash..

    Hope this helped… 🙂

    1. :haanji: Yep Akshatha.. I had got a check up done at Kaya. They only told me to take more of protein diet, So i started with protein supplements (which the doctor recommended) & taking eggs regularly.
I am now using mustard/ coconut oil with 2 capsuled of vitamin E squeezed for gentle head massage & it will be too early for me to comment if its reducing the hair fall. So keeping my fingers crossed. :chewnails:
And ya, I already stopped using lemon after seeing the results.

      thankooos

  7. want to know if we can use honey on hair, some people say it leads to grey hair but some people say it’s a great conditioner…so confused.!

    1. Hi praseena..

even i’ve heard that honey will grey hair.. But as far as i know.. its not a bleaching agent.. its a very good moisturiser.. even am eager to know.. :woot:

  8. Hi Mysha, you can take the white of a egg…beat it with a fork with 1 tsp of water till little but frothy..then squeeze the juice of half a lemon..beat it a couple of times and then apply it on your hari.. leave it for 20 – 30 mins.. your hair will resemble that of a sadhu (ones who don’t comb their hair)…don’t get scared..wash it with water couple of times and then apply any regular shampoo (always dilute it with water) and wash as usual..no need for any extra conditionar for normal hair..if yours are very dry then apply any regular conditioner… once you towel dry you will have soft, shiny and fabulous hair… this is what I do and the hair is so soft and shiny..
One of my friend swears by coconut milk..she takes milk from 1 half of a coconut and applies it to her hair.. leaves it for 30 mins before washing it out.. she says that it helps in hair growth too..am yet to try it…

  10. Hi Mysha,

mix banana pulp and honey and apply it….it hydrates the hair and keep them soft and shiny….besides adding protein to the diet really helps…when avocado is in season, u can mix avocado, egg and olive oil for a nourishing hair pack…and also try turban therapy once in a week after massaging hair with olive oil 🙂
