Homemade Sunscreen Recipes

Hello beautiful ladies!
Our stash of skin-care products is never complete without bottles of sunscreen. Sunscreens protect the skin from the harmful UVA and UVB rays and prevent sun tan and damage. But are all the sunscreen products actually safe? According to a report published by FDA in 2007, sunscreens which are supposed to reduce your risk of skin cancer actually increase the skin-cancer risk! Well, actually it is because of the harmful chemicals that are often added to the product, to increase the efficiency.

But not using sunscreens is not a solution either. So, in this post I will tell you about a few sunscreen recipes that you can prepare at home, according to your skin type and need.

Basic ingredients required:
• Non-nano zinc oxide- Currently most sunscreen manufacturing companies use nano-particles of zinc oxide as it does not leave a white cast. But due to its extremely small size, it may enter our body, penetrating the skin, leading to various health hazards. So non-nano zinc oxide is preferred which sits on the skin, absorbing the UV rays and converting them to less harmful infrared rays, thus protecting the skin.
• Coconut oil- Has natural SPF properties.
• Shea butter- It has natural sun-protecting properties.
• Beeswax- It has anti inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties that prevent skin-irritation.
• Essential oils- These oils help to absorb oil, and soothe and protect the skin. But citrus oils should be avoided as they make the skin sensitive to light.

Sunscreen for oily skin:

This sunscreen cream is loaded with the goodness of aloevera gel and is great for oily skinned beauties.

Ingredients:
Zinc Oxide- 5 teaspoon
Fresh aloe vera gel- 1 table spoon
Beeswax- 1 table spoon
Olive oil- 1/4th cup
Distilled water- ½ cup

Essential oil- a few drops for the fragrance

Process- Melt the beeswax and mix oil to it in a double boiler. Remove it from heat and add the extract from Vitamin E capsule. Add the zinc oxide powder in it. Now boil the distilled water and add the aloe vera gel to it. Then, whisk the oil, beeswax mixture well and add the distilled water with aloe gel to it. Mix everything evenly and allow the mixture to cool. Pour it in a container and store in fridge.

Sunscreen for dry skin:

This recipe will help you to make a sunscreen product that moisturizes dry skin perfectly.

Ingredients:
Coconut oil- 1/4th cup
Beeswax- 1/4th cup
Almond oil- ½ cup
Zinc oxide- 2 tablespoon
Shea butter- 1 teaspoon

Process- Add all the ingredients except the zinc oxide in a glass bowl and heat the mixture over a double boiler. As all the ingredients melt, stir very well to mix everything. Remove the bowl from the double boiler and add the zinc oxide. Mix it very well, so that it is incorporated properly in the mixture. Allow the product to cool and store in dry place/ fridge.

Sunscreen for sensitive skin:

The use of baby cream makes it an ideal product for sensitive skin. Also, no zinc oxide is used. The sunscreen properties of the natural ingredients are considered here.

Ingredients:
Any moisturizing cream for babies- 1/4th cup
Beeswax- 1 teaspoon
Sesame seed oil- 1 teaspoon
Aloevera gel- 1 tablespoon
Cocoa butter- 1 tablespoon
Coconut oil- 1 tablespoon
Lavender oil- 10 drops (optional, for the scent)

Process – Add all the products together and mixed thoroughly (except the lavender oil). Allow the mixture to cool. Add the lavender oil to it. Pour it in a bottle and store in fridge.

Sunscreen lotion:

If you want a sunscreen lotion for your body, you can use the similar recipes as mentioned above and just have to avoid the beeswax and the zinc oxide.
sunscreen lotion
Ingredients:

Shea butter- 60 ml
Coconut oil- 60 ml
Aloe vera gel- 2 table spoon
Essential oils- a few drops

Process– Heat everything together and mix them up. Allow to cool and pour it in a bottle. Store the product in fridge.

Things to remember:
• While dealing with zinc oxide, it is better to use a mask as inhaling it is not a good idea.
• The product should be stored in fridge.
• As there is no preservative, it has to be used up within 3-6 months.
• If you feel that the sun is too harsh outside, you may prefer using chemical sunscreen. Use the homemade versions when you are at home during the day-time.
• If you want to avoid the long tiring process, go for the fastest method. Take any lotion (that does not contain any citrus oil) and add zinc oxide to it. Shake it well and use it as sunscreen lotion.
