Homemade Ubtan for Fair and Glowing Skin

Hi IMBBians,

Ubtan is an age old traditional face pack used by Indian women for addressing various skin problems. Indian brides especially use it before weddings to add a vibrant and translucent glow to their faces for the big day. But what is ubtan? Ubtan is a mixture of dry powders and one or two binding liquids. The powders and liquids are sourced from natural ingredients to ensure that the pack suits and works for all skin types. The powders used generally are sandalwood powder, gram flour, and turmeric. These powders may be turned into a paste using milk, rosewater or plain water. The best part is that the powder mixture can be stored in a container in bulk and used anytime by adding the liquids.

Achieving bright and glowing skin is the priority these days as the sun is shining high and environmental pollutants tend to make our faces very dull and dark. An ubtan facial will rescue your skin and here’s how you can make your own concoction at home.

1. Dry Ingredients

Take some basic ingredients of ubtan like sandalwood powder and turmeric powder. Sandalwood powder is known for its exfoliating and sun tan removing properties. It helps to lighten the skin while soothing it. It also brightens dull skin and has antibacterial activity. Turmeric powder is a medicinal herb used for treating various illnesses and its benefits in imparting a natural glow to the face have been realized too. Take a tablespoon of sandalwood powder in a bowl and add a pinch of turmeric powder to it. Avoid adding too much turmeric as it may burn or irritate the skin. Mix the dry ingredients well.

2. Wet Ingredients

To bind the turmeric and sandalwood, add milk cream into the bowl and stir well. Milk is beneficial for dry and damaged skin. Alternatively, rose water may be added for those who have oily skin. The rose water will also help to soothe and unclog dirty pores in the skin. For those with normal skin, mineral water may be added to combine the dry ingredients. Mix well until a thick paste forms. For added brightening property, add a few drops of lemon juice. Again, add the juice in moderation as it may clash with the turmeric. Apply this pack at night or avoid going out in the sun right after application as lemon juice contains acids that make the skin more susceptible to sun tan.

3. Exfoliating Ingredient

There are some natural exfoliators that can be added to the paste to make it even more effective at pulling out the dirt and grime from the skin. For this ubtan, take some dried rose petals and crush them roughly using a mortar and pestle. Add this to the ubtan right before application. Use your fingers or a face pack brush to apply a thin and even layer all over the face and neck. Allow it to dry completely. Moisten the face with a little bit of water before removal of the pack. Then start massaging the face slowly, allowing the rose petals to exfoliate the face gently. Keep adding water and wash off the ubtan pack from the face completely. Pat dry to reveal bright and glowing skin.
