Product purchased by IMBB
When the Hourglass Ambient Lighting powders got released early last year, the whole beauty world was “awing and oohing” about them. I was eyeing this product from that time. Thanks to IMBB for giving me an opportunity to try this product and check out whether this product lived up to all the hype?
What it is:
A wardrobe of six universal finishing powders that recreate the most exquisitely flattering light—from ethereal moonlight to luminous candlelight. Each powder captures, diffuses and softens surrounding light with groundbreaking photoluminescent technology. Choose one or more and step into your perfect light.
What it does:
- Powders capture, diffuse and soften the way light is reflected on skin, brighten the appearance, and conceal skin imperfections, pores and wrinkles.
- Infused with technologically advanced soft-focus particles that help make skin appear younger, even-toned and radiant.
- Unlike traditional powders that use opaque pigments, Ambient utilizes “photoluminescent technology” – micron-size spherical particles that refract light and create transparent coverage.
- Universal powders make them suitable for every skin tone, while each can be worn for day and night.
- Free of parabens, talc, fragrance, nano-particles and gluten.
They come in 6 variants and each has been described as below.
Ethereal Light is an opalescent sheer, cool white powder that mimics a moonlit glow – even in broad daylight
Diffused Light is a soft, warm, pale yellow powder that conceals redness and gives skin clarity – like a soft ray of morning light
Dim Light is a neutral peach beige powder that blurs imperfections and highlights a radiant complexion with the perfect balance of warm and cool tones
Mood Light is a soft, sheer lavender pink powder that mimics the softest most forgiving light and reveals your brightest complexion
Luminous Light is a champagne pearl powder that creates a soft, incandescent candlelit glow – day or night
Radiant Light is a sun-kissed golden beige powder that enhances the overall complexion with believable, subtle warmth, and also extends a summer glow.
My Experience with Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder – Dim Light:
Out of all 6 shades, I read very good reviews about Dim Light. People with a wide range of skin tones have raved about how it transforms the way their skin looks. I am NC40-45 and decided to go for Dim Light.
The product comes in a glossy brown compact, which houses 10 gm of the powder and a mirror. No brush included. They sell the brush separately for $35. The glossy packaging gets dirty pretty soon with fingerprints.
Dim Light is a soft beige shade, which is almost matte with satin finish while other 5 shades have noticeable sheen or shimmer in them. This was almost like the shade of compact I would use, but on the cooler side. The product is very finely milled and does not have any fallout. The powder looks very flat in the pan, but once swatched, it has a satiny finish to it.
I actually took more time than usual to test this product because I wanted to understand what is actually so great about it and why this impresses people.
I have used it in following different ways:
- Just over moisturized face.
- To set the concealer.
- As a setting powder over foundation and tinted moisturizer.
I couldn’t use it as a highlighter as it neither has much sheen nor lighter in shade. Darker skinned beauties could use this as a subtle highlight.
Just on top of moisturizer, it did provide very little coverage but didn’t do much to even out the skin, as it is not a very pigmented product.
It works as a nice setting powder on top of a tinted moisturizer or a foundation. That way it kind of blurs the appearance of pores, thanks to the fine texture of the product. I do not have much wrinkles to comment about it’s effect on wrinkles. On a normal daylight, I couldn’t see a big difference in my face, but under bright light and flash photograph, it does provide a soft glow to the face. You can see that in the sheered out swatch picture below. That was taken with flash.
This does not control oil very well. If you have very oily skin, you may have to use a separate powder to control oil and then this as a finishing powder. I also use it under my eyes to set the concealer. It works well that way as well, but it wouldn’t provide any coverage though.
Pros of Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder – Dim Light:
- Gives a subtle glow to the face.
- Reduces the appearance of pores and fine lines to an extent.
- Does not look cakey.
- Beautiful packaging.
- Good amount of product, would last for a long time.
- Works as a setting powder.
- Works for almost all skin tones.
Cons of Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder – Dim Light:
- No brush included.
- The shiny package is prone to become dirty from fingerprints.
This is a multi purpose product and it’s up to each individual to find out which way it works best for her. The effect they provide on skin is noticeable though they are subtle. I would like to try other shades to see if they work wonders on my skin. I would suggest one to try different shades before buying, as these are pricey.
