Today, I bring to you a hyped up and one of a kind makeup product in the beauty market. It’s the Hourglass Ambient Lighting powder in the shade “Mood Light.”

Unlike traditional powders, which merely cloak imperfections, Ambient Lighting Powder utilizes photoluminescent technology to filter out harsh light and refine the appearance of the complexion. The powders deliver a multidimensional luminescence to every skintone, making it appear softer, younger, and lit-from-within. The finishing powders enhance skin in any type of light, including flash photography. With six universal shades available, you can create your desired effect—not unlike having a personal lighting technician. Ambient is free of talc, gluten, fragrance, and nanoparticles. It is available in six universally flattering shades from least pearl to most pearl.

My Take on Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder Mood Light:

I must admit I was highly intrigued by this product as soon as it hit the market and couldn’t wait to give it a go. We all know how different out face tends to look under different lights, which is also one of the basic principles to consider which helps to attain a beautiful photograph. These Hourglass ambient lighting powder were designed with that exact concept in mind. They come in 6 different shades, all mimicking the effect that a certain type of flattering light.

Packaging:  Isn’t the packaging of this product luxe looking!! The compact looks solid metal with its mirror finish which does attract a lot of fingerprints, but the case is actually plastic and very lightweight. It has a decent-sized mirror which is always useful. I do miss having some kind of applicator brush/brush compartment which means that I cannot carry this around in my purse for travel touchups as travelling with a huge powder brush to use with is not practical.

Shade:  The shade I have is called “Mood Light,” which is described as a soft, sheer lavender pink that mimics the softest, most forgiving light and brightens the complexion. I was first scared while purchasing this product as I thought this powder looked more like a blush rather than an all over powder.  Even though I embrace the pink undertones of my skin and don’t prefer camouflaging them with yellow-based foundations, I was worried that adding a pink powder over my already pink-based skin may not be a good idea, but since this powder applies very sheer, I had no reason to be concerned.  The effect that this powder provides is very very subtle, very natural looking and you cannot go overboard with this product at all. When swatched heavily, the powder looks a very cool-toned baby pink on my NW23 skin tone.

Application:  My preferred method of using this powder is that I apply this heavily over my cream blush and do a light dusting all over the face, the result of which you will see in the FOTD below. The application of this over my blush helps increase the staying power of the existing blush as well as provides a very subtle glow. The glow is not like that of a highlighter as this powder does not contain any visible specks of shimmer, but it does have a satin finish. Doing a light dusting of this on my face makes my face look radiant and imparts a healthy pink flush, lit-from-within glow.

Staying Power:  The effects of this are not long lasting. When freshly applied, my face does look fresh and radiant, but the glow fades within 2-3 hours.  I have normal to dry skin, and once I decided to skip my setting powder and use only this instead, which was a mistake as the staying power of my makeup overall decreased considerably.  Keep in mind that this is a finishing powder and can no way replace your setting powder. It does not oil control whatsoever.

Overall, I do like the concept of this product. It is one very innovative, one-of-a-kind product in the market. It does give a good effect, but the effect is so subtle, almost bordering on unnoticeable, and with the poor staying power and lack of oil control and makeup setting abilities make me question whether this $45 investment is worth it. It is no way a multi-tasking product, rather its more of a nice complementary addition to your makeup regime which does not make this product a “must have.” This is a product I can make do without hence I am unsure if I will repurchase this.

• Imparts a healthy, radiant glow to the skin.
• Contains no visible flecks of shimmer or glitter.
• Satiny finish.
• Luxe packaging.
• Light floral scent.
• Does not accentuate pores.
• Does not make my face look too pink, effect is very subtle.

Cons of Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder Mood Light:

• Lack of applicator makes it not the most travel friendly/use on the go product.
• No oil control abilities.
• Poor staying power.
• Very expensive.
• Not a multi-tasking product.
• Case attracts a lots of fingerprints.
• Cannot replace your setting powder.
