“Eye shadow palettes, with their flat surfaces and defined borders, can be so confining. I wanted to curate a collection of eye shadows with a versatile, continuous spectrum. Much like an artist’s palette, Modernist is designed to inspire an endless number of looks with its sculptural depth and definition.”—CarisaJanes, Hourglass CEO.

My Experience with Hourglass Color Field Modernist Eyeshadow Palette:

Packaging:

This Eyeshadow Palette comes in a lightweight case with a decent-sized mirror. The outer case is very prone to attracting fingerprints and also it scratches easily. The size of the whole palette is not very big. The whole case is the length from your wrist upto your fingers. Also, I do not like that there is no applicator provided.
The eye shadow palette contains only 5 shades. I do find that every palette is color coordinated beautifully ranging from the lightest to darkest in a sand dune like transition. You can create a beautiful eye look with only  these shades as you can see in the EOTD but there are only so many combinations you can do with just 5 shades before bringing out you other shadows to help. Hence, I wouldn’t call it the most versatile . This is a very innovative way of packaging shadows which traditionally come in individual pans.

The placement of shadows right besides each other can also be a disadvantage. Though the size and width of each shadow is decent to help me dip most of my eye brushes into it to pick up the precise color I want, I do feel some difficulty if I using my large shader brush or my fluffy blending brush especially with the corner-most smaller shades.

Texture:

These shadows are incredibly powdery. With one dip on my brush, it kicks up immense amount of powder. Since the surface of the shadows is not flat, the shadow powder falls on the adjoining shades hence slowly creating a muddled mess of colors. Even though the shadows are powdery, I do find them soft and easy to work with. The Color field palette has 4 out of 5 shades which are dark and have good pigmentation.

Shade 1- A matte cream shade. Very poor pigmentation. Hardly shows up on my skin as you can see in the swatch. Tried using this as a brow bone and inner corner highlight but it failed to perform.

Shade 2– A nice metallic deep brassy golden shade. Pigmentation is good. It works great as a transition shade or all over eye shadow. The shimmer in this shadow is not gritty but gives a beautiful sheen.

Shade 3– A deep metallic bronze. Works great to deepen up the crease.

Shade 4- An absolutely beautiful forest green. Pigmentation is very good. It goes on with full color. It has a beautiful sheen which catches the light and looks different from every direction.

Shade 5- A deeper more darker green than shade 4 with visible specks of gold glitter. I use it to darken my outer V. The gold glitter specks in it do generate some fall out. Pigmentation is good.

I did find the shadows to apply and blend easily and did not cause a lot of fall out on me. But since these eye shadows are so powdery, you do need to take care not to over blend as all the colors do tend to get mixed into each other and can get muddy very quickly.

Staying Power:

The staying power of these shadows is okay, not that great. They stay for 4-5 hours after which all the colors start to melt into each other and become muddy. I do have oily lids which might be causing this and I usually use a primer; but for the purpose of testing these shadows, I did not use one.

Overall, not the best product put forth by Hourglass and for the hefty price tag of $58, you are better off buying a Urban Decay Naked palette or my favorite Lorac Pro which offer many more shadows and much better quality shadows that just 5 shades. This palette is neither outstanding nor   value for money.

In The EOTD
Used the gold shade as a transition and used the Bronze shade to deepen up crease.

Used the forest green shade as all over lid color with the darker green shade in the outer corner.

Used the light cream shade as inner corner and brow bone highlight.
