Hourglass Girl Lip Stylo Innovator Review

Hey lovely ladies,

I know that I have been off the grid for a long time now. Sometimes when you think things are finally falling in place, everything just gets blown to smithereens and you are left wondering how to put the pieces back together. That is my current state of being. I won’t bother you with details. Let us just get on with why we are here. This is my first lipstick purchase – I mean in a bullet form – after a fairly long time. I’ve been so addicted to liquid lipsticks and have become extremely conscious of my existing lipstick collection, that I had not bought a bullet lipstick in ages. I had put myself on a lipstick ban. It was finally broken to pick this Lip Stylo from Hourglass. Let’s find out if it was worth breaking the ban for.

Packaging:
Yes, I am a sucker for packaging. Honestly, I am working on it!! The lipstick comes packaged in the usual Hourglass brown cardboard packaging – very elegant. The lipstick itself has a chubby pencil type of design while the dispense mechanism is still twist up and not something you need to sharpen. The lipstick tube is again the typical Hourglass brown with gold detailing. It looks quite stunning and classy. If you had more than one of these, you wouldn’t be able to differentiate colours except for the sticker at the bottom. For once, the font size is big enough for you to be able to read without squinting.

The lipstick is shaped like a pencil – not like a traditional bullet. While it is still new – it is easy to apply. Being creamy, it isn’t likely to retain the shape. Later, how easy it will be to apply – especially around the outer corners of the lips – we will see.

The one con – and, for me, a big one at that – is the fact that the lipstick doesn’t slide in fully once twisted down. Like the tip of a pencil, the tip of the lipstick stays exposed. And when I say “the tip” – it isn’t a bit – it’s a substantial amount. Yes, there is a cap to ensure hygiene, etc., but since the lipstick doesn’t twist fully down, you have to be extra cautious while removing the cap or re-capping it. One would thing that is no big deal, but in daily use, it is a pain to be constantly careful while handling it – what if you nick it while opening or closing the cap? What if the cap comes loose? (Though it’s not likely to because the cap fits quite snugly to the tube) However, this is still irritating.

My Experience with Hourglass Girl Lip Stylo Innovator:

Color:  I had no plans of buying any of these. Like I mentioned previously, I was on a lipstick ban. So, I had no shade shortlisted in mind. I had actually gone to the Hourglass counter to check out the new stick foundation – which by the way, seemed bit too creamy for my oily skin. I thought I would have a look at these and the new liquid lipsticks from them. I didn’t even check the liquid lipsticks because the packaging seemed so tiny – like these were deluxe samples rather than sale-able product. I actually verified it from the counter staff! Anyway! So, I saw these and thought to try a couple of shades. This one looked like a warm toned, slightly orange tinted, red. I kind of liked it on me and walked out with it. However, when I came back and checked this in my room, something seemed off. The shade definitely did not seem warm toned. I actually had to reconfirm the shade name on the tube to verify that I got the correct shade. If you look at swatch pics, it actually looks a tad bit cool toned and a very different kind of red. The fact is that the shade is one of the most neutral reds I’ve ever come across. The look is glossy and creamy which makes the light bounce off it, so in the yellow ambient mode lights of the store, it seemed warm toned. While, in the start white light at home, paired with cooler shades on the lid, it is pulling a cooler red. It is a gorgeous shade of red – absolutely beautiful with a creamy sheen to it which looks very very sophisticated.

Pigmentation: Pigmentation is very good – medium to fully opaque – just what the brand has claimed. It covers all lip pigmentation easily. If you want to go for sheer coverage – you may not want intense colour but do want hydration that the texture offers – you can just lightly dab it on your lips.

Texture: The texture is gorgeous, it’s smooth, buttery, creamy and yet, it doesn’t sink into the fine lines of the lips. It does not bunch up when you press your lips together. It’s absolutely stunning. The lipstick is hydrating and has this amazing polished lustrous finish. It is supposed to have a blend of shea moisture, jojoba, mimosa and sunflower seed. It actually make your lips look plumper and more attractive. Despite the creamy texture, I did not see it bleeding.

Lasting Power: Considering how creamy it is, it has decent wear time – about 4-5 hours – depending on what you eat/drink. This is because the lipstick will transfer onto cups and spoons and straws, etc easily. And as it does so, it will start disappearing from your lips. There isn’t really too much of a stain left with this one. So, anyone who knows me, knows that this can be my pet peeve. However, I have learnt to appreciate that all lipsticks do not need to stay with you forever – all of them aren’t your BFFs, some can be a colleague or a neighbour or a relative…and all can have a place in your life/vanity!

Fragrance: I actually sniffed to check this. There is a fragrance; however, it isn’t sickly sweet fragrance some products have but neither is this pleasant. I think it is the fragrance of the seed oils.

To sum this up for you:

Pros of Hourglass Girl Lip Stylo Innovator:

  • A stunning shade.
  • Lightweight texture.
  • Good pigmentation.
  • Easy to apply with the applicator – very easy to get clean lines.
  • It applies smoothly and evenly.
  • No bleeding.
  • Classy packaging..
  • Decent wear time – 4-5 hours.
  • Extremely hydrating.
  • Gives a lustrous polished appealing look to the lips.

Cons of Hourglass Girl Lip Stylo Innovator:

  • Packaging – lipsticks need to go into the tube! Period!
  • The fragrance of the seed oils may get off putting over time.

IMBB Rating:
A 4.5/5 product.

A lot of times you hear people say that it is a waste of money to buy high-end lipsticks and that drugstore brands have just about the same shade readily available. Drugstore brands have come a long way in the last decade or more. Some of the drugstore offering are at par with the high-end brands. And honestly, just because it is high end does not always guarantee the actual quality or performance of a product, but having said that, there are still a few high-end lipsticks for which you will not find a comparative colour or quality in drugstore – like the Guerlain Rouge Gs, YSL Volupte Shines. These Hourglass Lip Stylos definitely join those ranks! Worth a splurge.

Would I Repurchase/Recommend Hourglass Girl Lip Stylo Innovator?
I really want to pick more but my lipstick ban and the packaging issues are currently working as a good deterrent for me.

  1. such a beautiful color and looks absolutely stunning on you. 🙂 i totally agree about what you wrote in last paragraph. I am trying out so many budget lip colors these days and all i am thinking about is that there is a reason some lipsticks are priced at what they are. it’s not just about the color when it comes to dupes. there is so much more. 🙂

  2. Hey Kulpreet,
Nice review, agree with the facts that high end product cost a bit more, but then they have somethingmore to offer in the product which usually drugstore products or dupes do not have!! Nice makeup and the lip colour suits your skin tone. For a change it was not a liquid lipstick, but I guess you fancy liquid lippies more!!
