Today’s product is the current talk of the town. It’s so exciting when you are able to get your hands on a recently-launched product and get to play with it and report back on “is it worth it”!! Hourglass recently extended their “Hourglass Veil” line with the launch of their Veil Translucent Setting Powder.
Product Description:
An ultra-refined powder formulated with light-reflecting particles to blur imperfections, packaged in an innovative sifter designed dispense the perfect amount of product.
What it does:
This setting powder blurs the appearance of pores, fine lines, and wrinkles for an airbrushed finish. The innovative gold sifter and custom cap allow for the perfect amount of product to be dispensed. The formula is infused with diamond powder for the most refined light refraction without any flashback, and sets makeup for longer wear. This translucent powder, formulated without talc, leaves an invisible finish, and is perfect for all skin tones. It is formulated without parabens.
Suggested Usage: Using the Veil Powder Brush (sold separately), pick up a small amount of powder and tap off the excess. -Apply powder all over the face to set makeup.

My Experience with Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder:
Packaging: It is Hourglass – so there is bound to be emphasis on packaging and setting it apart from the rest. The powder comes packed in a “largish” tub with the iconic Hourglass brown cap; it looks similar to other setting powders. However, you find the Hourglass-twist once you open the package. Once you open the cap, it reveals a golden well with the sifter spelling out “H”. However, that’s not all, the lid is not a straight one, instead it is shaped like an inward cup to ensure that when placed on the well, it leaves only a small amount of space. The gimmick being – if you turn the tub upside down once – the sifter will dispense just the right amount of product to ensure one face setting application. This aspect works if you store it on its bottom on your vanity. If the tub gets knocked around, there will definitely be more powder around than what may be ideal for one application. Having said that, I have not had any leakage or incidents of powder blowing all over the place when I open the tub. The tub comes packaged in a Hourglass-brown cardboard box.
Shade: The shade “Translucent” described by the brand as “natural finish,” is a slightly yellow-tinted powder. I do not see an issue with the powder having universal appeal – for light to medium to tanned skin. However, I am not sure how one shade-fits-all will suit the extreme ends of the spectrum – the extremely fair or the ebony deep skin tones. It is available in only one shade at the moment. There is no news/update for the shade range ever changing for it.
Texture: Here is where Hourglass excels. The products has an extremely fine milled texture. The lack of Talc in the ingredients ensures that the product does not have thicker or creamier feel to it. Instead, of feeling creamy, the powder actually feels velvety smooth.
Application: The product comes without a powder puff. Instead, Hourglass launched a dual-ended Veil setting brush with this – sold separately for a whopping $64. I did not buy the brush. I use the Sonia G Face One Brush with this. You can use any fluffy powder/cheek brush. Dip into the well, tap off the excess and either stipple or pat or buff into the skin. It works beautifully as a setting powder – keeping your foundation in place, setting it, giving a “veil” of perfection! It actually does blur away the imperfections – not by giving coverage but by diffusing/reflecting light. Soft lines on your face do seem less obvious. I love using it for setting and also for buffing like a finishing powder. There is a certain amount of light diffusion it causes without it being in the least bit shimmery. And the best part – it never seems caked on. It is virtually undetectable. Sounds perfect? It actually is except for the following couple of points, One, there is no element of oil control. In all honesty, the brand does not claim that it will give oil control either. So, I am not putting down the product for that. However, if oil control is something you need from your setting powder – just stating it clearly that it will not. Two, for some very weird reason, the powder does not work on my under eye area. It does seem to set the concealer. However, in a very short span of time – maybe an hour or so – it seems to eat up my concealer and the darkness of the under-eyes seems obvious again. For reference, my under-eyes are fairly dark, have lines and tend to get sweat first. And my city is super humid right now. So, keep this in mind before purchasing that you will need alternative solution for your under-eye area. And this is a bummer coz its texture and the effect it creates on the face – if replicated on the under-eye area – would have been perfect.
Pigmentation: Even though the shade has a distinct flesh/yellow tinge to it, it smooths over the skin and melts into it. It has no pigmentation and will provide you zero coverage.
Staying Power: I get about 4-5 hours before the need to touch up because my face is shining!!
Pros of Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder:
- Beautiful velvety texture.
- Extremely lightweight.
- Indiscernible – does not cake up at all.
- Does not change the colour of my foundation. Cannot state how it would impact someone with very fair or very dark complexion.
- Blurs pores, imperfections, fine lines.
- Provides a difficult-to-explain light onto the face. Not shimmer, not glow. Just a diffused light.
- It does not emphasize texture of my skin.
- Decent wear time – 4-5 hours.
- Cruelty free.
- Vegan.
- Beautiful packaging.
Cons of Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder:
- No oil control – the brand did not make claims that it will control oil.
- Does not seem to work effectively on the under-eyes, seems to eat up my concealer in an hour or so.

The powder itself is beautiful. In normal scenarios, the fact that I cannot use it in my under-eye area would be a dealbreaker. I would generally not even think about suggesting one powder for use under the eyes and another for the face. The very thought of that seems too high maintenance! Having said that – this powder is lovely on the face that I am willing to live with the con and would repurchase when it got over.
