How to Prevent Static Hair after Straightening

Hello everyone,

Today’s post is about how you can prevent static hair after straightening. For those of you who heat treat or straighten your hair, you must be all too familiar with static hair as an aftermath. There are many reasons for static hair and the most common one is straightening it with a flat iron. Using a flat iron to straighten your hair stretches the strands and dries out the hair which causes static, dry and damaged hair.

Here are some easy and effective ways in which you can avoid static hair after straightening it, and still be able to reap all the goodness of straight and styled hair.

1. Let your hair dry completely before you begin straightening it:

This is one of the most crucial things to remember before you straighten your hair. Your hair needs to be completely dry (not even damp) before you start using any heat styling tool on it. This will help prevent static hair.

2. Always use a heat protection spray or serum:

Static hair is a common sign of excessively dry or damaged hair and heat styling further aggravates the condition. It is important for you to use a heat protection spray or serum before you begin straightening it. This will create a barrier between the hot tool and your hair, and it will help keep the natural moisture in the hair intact.

3. Choose a flat iron or straightening with protective coating:

You must do your research before investing in a heat styling tool or flat iron. Although there is no dearth of range of hair tools available out there, it’s important for you to make sure that you’re choosing only what’s best for your hair which won’t cause any damage to it. Look out for hair straighteners with protective coating on them. This is especially useful for controlling static hair.

4. Apply a serum or dry oil after straightening:

Once you have straightened your hair, it’s crucial for you to apply a moisturizing product right away. You could apply a serum, dry oil or mousse. This will help hydrate your hair after the heat treatment and restore the shine and reduce the static.
Recommendation: Matrix Biolage Deep Smoothing Serum

5. Wear only natural fabrics after styling your hair:

Another simple way to prevent static hair is to ensure that you wear clothes made from only natural fabrics, especially after you straighten your hair. If you wear synthetic fabrics, your hair will constantly rub against your clothes and cause more static. Natural fabrics, such as cotton and silk, will not have that effect.

6. Use a nourishing shampoo and conditioner:

If you’re dealing with the problem of static hair, you might want to switch your regular shampoo and conditioner to more nourishing alternatives. Harsh and stripping hair-cleansing products can make your hair dry and cause more static, especially after you heat treat it.

7. Use a comb or hairbrush made with natural materials:

Another useful tip to prevent static hair is to use a comb or hairbrush that is made from natural materials. Typically, you will find combs and hairbrushes in the market that are made with plastic or other synthetic materials. However, you should look out for wooden (or other types of natural materials) combs and brushes, as these will go a long way in reducing the friction and static in your hair.
