How To Do Permanent Hair Straightening At Home

Hello, girls,

I am back with another post! Today, we would be talking about how to do permanent hair straightening at home. Most women shell out a lot of money to straighten their hair at parlors or salons. However, the good news is that you can actually straighten your hair sitting at home. Being able to straighten your hair at home is a dream come true and it is actually cheap and very effective as well. So, here is how to do permanent hair straightening at home.

How To Do Permanent Hair Straightening At Home

1. Use A Hair Relaxer:

There is a huge variety of hair relaxers in the market from which you can choose as per your needs. When it comes to choosing hair relaxers, there are two different types– hair relaxers with lye and hair relaxers without lye. Relaxers are typically a type of lotion or cream which makes it easier to straighten the hair by “relaxing” the natural curls in it. The active agent in it is usually an alkali, which straightens your hair easily.

2. Use Protective Gear:

You should always wear protective gear before you start the process. Hair relaxers and other hair straightening creams contain a lot of chemical in it which may affect your bare hands to a large extent. In some cases, it may also lead to burns and irritation. So, you can use disposable gloves or an old T-shirt to handle the products.

3. Mix The Hair Relaxer:

If you have used hair relaxers before, you would be aware of the fact that they come with different creams and lotions. Now mix all this into a paste, the creams, and lotions which are provided in the pack and mix it with a wooden spatula. Avoid using bare hands to mix all the ingredients. Let the product sit for some time.

Patch Test with Protective Gear

4. Now Use Some Petroleum Jelly:

Before you start applying hair relaxers to your hair, you should be using petroleum jelly. Take some Vaseline and gently rub on the neck, ears and also on the hairline. Make sure you apply a thick layer of Vaseline on the hair. A thick layer of petroleum jelly will prevent hair relaxers from entering into your ears or come in contact with your skin. Hair relaxers contain a high amount of chemicals which is extremely bad for your skin.

5. Patch Test:

Before you start applying the hair relaxer to your hair, test a strand first. Take a small section of hair (the bottom part of the hair) and apply the relaxer. Wait for some time to check if there is any chemical reaction taking place. After some time, wash off the cream and allow it to dry. If you see hair fall outs, changes texture or there is any hair breakage; avoid using the relaxer on your whole hair.

6. Follow The Instructions:

You should always follow the instructions which are mentioned at the back of the box. Not only the instructions, carefully set a timer so that you don’t keep the hair relaxer for an extended period of time. Keeping the hair relaxer for more time than what it is said on the box can lead to serious damage.

7. Start From The Roots:

Once you have patch tested a smaller section of hair, you should start applying the cream from the roots to the tips. Work in small sections so that you can apply the hair relaxer properly. Make sure you don’t apply too much on the scalp as there are chances of scalp irritation.

8. Comb Your Hair:

Once you have completely covered your hair with hair relaxer, you should comb your hair. This will make sure you spread the hair relaxer to the tresses evenly and also separate the strands. Make sure you keep checking the time while following the process.

Wash and Condition your hair

9. Shampoo And Condition:

Once the time is up, you should rinse and shampoo your hair well. If needed, you should rinse your hair again and make sure you get rid of the hair relaxer well. Also, apply conditioner so that it prevents your hair from getting dry and frizzy. Air dry your hair and you’re done!

  1. Are hair relaxers have alot of chemicals as you mentioned, also in the beginning you said its a chemical free process? I am confused.

  2. Hi Subhanshi,
Relaxers also come in three strengths, Super, Regular and Mild. The strength to use depends on your hair texture, so be sure you select the correct strength to avoid under- or over-processing. So, the amount of chemical used in the relaxer depends.

Sodium Hydroxide is the strongest type of principal chemical used in some chemical relaxers because it provides the most long lasting and dramatic effects.

Hope this clears your query 🙂
