Here is a comprehensive dressing guide for girls who have the rectangular body shape. Read on to know more.
Characteristics of rectangular body shape
Rectangle body shape is also known as “banana” or “ruler”. You belong to this group if you have:
⦁ a hip line with the same size as the shoulder line
⦁ average or small bust
⦁ not a very curvaceous body
⦁ no well-defined waist
Famous Rectangles: Cameron Diaz, Nicole Kidman and Hilary Duff
You can wear drapey, flowy fabrics with ease and as well as stiff and textured fabrics. Drapey fabrics will cling to your curves effortlessly while stiffer fabrics will help to create volume.
If you have a small bust area then go for turtlenecks, mandarin, funnel and halter necklines. If you have fuller bust area then go for boat necks, scoop necks, sweetheart necklines, V-necks and wrap necklines.
Not every body shape can carry off ruffled collars with ease but if you are a rectangle with the smaller bust area then flaunt those romantic ruffled collars with ease.
First of all, avoid large shoulder pads as they will make you look broader. You can opt for numerous style of sleeves from sleeveless, full sleeves, flared to cuffed up sleeves.
Tops and shirts
If you like to create the illusion of bigger breasts, choose tops with pockets, rushes, pleating and other front details. You can tie a belt around loose flowy tops to add definition to the waist area. Wrap tops, button down shirts, halter necks, turtle necks, basic tees and tank tops look great on rectangular body shapes.
Jackets and coats
Wear coats and jackets that emphasise the waist area. Look for bomber jackets, jean jackets and blouson jackets. Straight lines on jackets with double breasting add volume on the top. Avoid very short jackets that end above your waist, as they will emphasise your straight waist even more. When it comes to coats, look for pea coats, safari coats, trench coats and dusters.
Go for textured and big prints in your dresses. Do not forget to add a wide belt if your waist needs more definition. You can go for shift dresses, empire line dresses, shirt dresses, knit tube dresses, tank dresses, flapper dresses and dropped waist dresses.
To add volume to your bottom half, you can go for skirts that flare out below the waist. Skirt styles like the bubble, voluminous A-line, panelled, layered, full circle and trumpet skirts will look great on rectangular body shapes. You can also choose to show off your legs in short skirts.
Trousers and jeans
You can go for flowy linen pants, even high-waisted harem pants, slightly tapered pants or pants with pleats. Avoid pants with a low rise if you have a long torso. If you are looking for volume on top, slim bottom look then go for skinny jeans with a voluminous top. You can also go for baggy, flared or cargo jeans with tank tops and camis.
Swimwear and beachwear
For a bikini, choose top and bottom styles that add volume with ruffles, padding, pleating and embellishments. Halter bikinis will also look great. For your bottoms, make sure waistbands are cut straight across from hip to hip. You can go for swimsuits that draw attention to the waist and add some curves to your hips.
