How to Get Started with the “No-Poo” Hair Care Method

A couple of months back, I was having a lot of hair fall. My hair had actually become weak. They were breaking from the roots. It really really scared me. I started researching. I tried oiling my hair; it wasn’t helping. I was desperate for results. Then, I came across this method called ‘no-poo’, meaning no shampoo. I read and read. I read, I think around 10-15 articles before starting it officially. I was actually convinced from the 1st article itself. I needed something to clear my scalp from all the gunk.

I decided to follow the conventional baking soda and apple cider vinegar method. I did it for 15 days with the vinegar and a month with baking soda and my normal conditioner. I had to discontinue because I got highlights (umm, yay!). I have read that baking soda removes the color and I don’t want that after the huge amount I invested (if anyone can confirm this, it’ll be great). I’ll try posting a picture as soon as I can. So if you’re a person struggling with hair care, this is your way to follow.

Step 1: Cleanse Your Scalp

baking soda
The first thing you’ll need is to cleanse your scalp. You can use baking soda and water itself. Use one tablespoon of baking soda per cup of water. Do not make a baking soda paste as it dries your hair intensely. I did it one day and it felt so horrible. This step is to remove all the buildup of product from your scalp.

Step 2: Your Replaced Cleanser

Make a solution of baking soda and water. Again, in the same ratio. The thing with this is that every hair quality is different. The ratio is different for everyone. The best way is to mix and match and to figure out a perfect ratio for yourself. I have thick wavy hair. I read a lot of articles before finalizing. You can also have trial sessions before you go big with different ratios. Mix a little amount and keep it in your shower so you don’t have to mix every time. Also, since baking soda does not dissolve in water, shake well before every use.

There is something called the ‘transition period’. During this, your hair is basically adapting to the change. It is different for different hair types. During this time, your hair will be oilier. Tie your hair in a sleek ponytail or a bun during this time. Braids can work well. It was working really well on my hair as the transition period lasted only for a week or so for me. Shampoo strips the natural oil produced by the scalp and gives it a drier feeling. To avoid the dry feeling of our hair, we use a conditioner.

What baking soda does is, it removes the dirt and cleanses your hair without removing the natural oil. This increases the oil production initially and your scalp may take some time to adapt to this change, therefore, the transition period. The presence of natural oil provides natural shine to your hair and increases your hair growth. It is truly a miracle. I was struggling with my hair and just two weeks of this must have increased my hair length by an inch.

The frequency of using the mixture will decrease with time. Initially, you may want to use it every alternate day. But as time progresses, there will be days when you will only use water. Also, refrain from using hot tools on your hair.

Step 3: ACV with Water

Mix 1-2 tablespoons of ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar) with one cup of water and store it in another container. Now, it’ll smell horrible so for the added fragrance of your shampoo and conditioner, you can add essential oils. I personally love lavender oil and swear by it. This is an important step. Do not skip it ever. Baking soda is very basic in nature, i.e. it has a high pH. To neutralize your scalp, you need this acidic solution. Keep it on for a few minutes and rinse well with water.

Step 4: Hair Serum

Since you’re giving up all chemicals, why not make your own serum with oils. I’ll add another post explaining the serum in detail.

Step 5: Deep Conditioning

This is another important step. It nourishes your hair and conditions it further. You can use your own favorite DIY mask. I use an egg, both the white and yolk. If you use an egg, be careful to use only cold water.

Step 6: Scritching and Preening

Scritching is massaging your scalp in circular motions to produce more oil. Preening is distributing the excess oil to the entire hair length. You can either use your hands or a boar bristle brush to preen.

I seriously love this method. I’ll give the color a couple of months to settle in my hair and then I’ll go back to this. I seriously loved how my hair felt while using this method. Plus, no investment in expensive shampoo and conditioners. So go ahead, guys! Take a leap of faith in this. XOXO

  1. Hey….
Its really gud to know that your problem is resolved…
But when i tried thia method, acv gave me very bad reaults.
Plus everyone told me to avoid acv as it is acidic and harms a lot.

    1. I also use acv from time to time and it actually makes my hair better by removing build up. Don’t know why it didn’t work for you, Neha.

      1. A lot of times it does not work well because of the ratio of acv and water. try reducing the quantity of acv and increasing the quantity of water.
Also, i wanted to know if I have highlighted my hair after how long can i start using this procedure again without it effecting my hair color.
