How to Lose Weight in 4 Weeks- Diet Chart for Weight Loss

Rati’s darling hubby wrote a very thorough article here about fitness. Making us  girls acquainted with the point of view of the opposite sex. We all were totally impressed and agreed to every word he said. So let’s take the same thought a little further.

To stay fit and maintain your shape a regular workout helps a lot. But when it comes to losing weight and getting back in shape, a regular workout or exercise routine won’t suffice. You will have to take it a step further and take care of your diet in order to lose weight. Even the gym instructors would tell you so. Exercise and diet are the two sides of a coin. You can’t achieve weight loss with just one of them. A regular exercise routine and a healthy diet is your route to salvation.

I’m following a Indian diet myself by a leading dietician. Me, my cousin, some of her friends and a lot of people I know have taken diet from this dietician. And we all have lost a considerable amount of weight to say the least.

You must be thinking that the diets given by the dieticians are personalized then how can we all follow the same diet routine with our different weights and blood groups. For starters, he doesn’t gives the diet according to the blood group. Though, generally the diets given by dieticians are personalized. I have noticed a similarity In the diets given to me and others. And since now, that I know his diets are universal. I’d want YOU, Rati’s lovely readers to reap its fruit as well.

When I first went to this dietician, he told me to get some blood tests done. Like thyroid checkup, blood sugar, serum insulin in my case since I have PCOD. So it’s just not about losing weight but getting to know the underlying reason of piling on the kilos. In my case it was increased serum insulin levels. But in my cousins case all her tests were ok, she was gaining weight because of her erratic routine and the junk food she so loved. So if you think that you are doing everything right but still gaining weight, the first thing you should be doing is finding the underlying reason for it.

First things first, If everything with you is fine your weight gain is due to lethargy, wrong dietary habits and erratic routine. So When u go on a diet make sure that whatever plan u follow it must be timed right as well. You must wake up latest by 8:00 ( that’s for the late risers, even I used to wake up by 10 or 11). This is the most important thing in your routine because the body has its own clock and you shouldn’t mess with it.

This diet is split in 4 weeks period with the diet changing every week.
Before starting the diet weigh yourself and write it down somewhere. This way you know where you started and you feel good to see the scales going down.

Some things you need to follow this diet:

  1. No salt after 7:30
  2. No aerated drinks. Yes that includes even the diet version.
  3. Restrict mango and banana
  4. Restrict potato and rice.
  5. No artificial juices as well.
  6. Half an hour of aerobic exercise daily. If u want to join a gym good enough. But if due to any reason maybe time or money constraint u can’t join a gym. All you need is a comfortable pair of shoes to do some aerobics, a skipping rope to do at least 500 skips (5 sets of 100 skips and increasing it as you go). 1.5 -2 kgs dumbbells for toning your upper body. Just these basic things and you are set.
  7. 20 mins of breathing exercise. ( I’m talking about Baba Ramdevs pranayam)

Without further ado I present you with the Indian diet.

Week 1
8:00 am (as soon as you wake up) – 2 glasses of methi seeds water ( soak 1tsp of methi seeds in 2 glasses of water. Strain out the methi seeds and drink the water. Helps a lot in water retention and bloating) 5 soaked almonds with the skin. 1 kali mirch u don’t have to chew it just swallow it down.
9:00 am – 1 toast (brown bread) with amul lite butter / hung curd dressing/ salad and chutney
11:30 am – one fruit of your wish

1:30 pm – A small plate of salad before starting the meal. The fibers in the salad fills u up which in turn prevents false hunger that makes u overeat.1 bran chappati (mix wheat flour and wheat bran in equal proportions.) with 1 bowl ( normal sized katori ) of dal. Generally at my place dal is cooked at night so I used to store the dal made at night for the other days lunch, u can do the same.
5:00 pm – 1cup of milk or tea with 2 biscuits(just marie, no other biscuits)/ 1 small bowl bhuna channa/ 1bowl popcorn ( not the buttery act 2 ones but air popped popcorns without the butter)

7:30 pm –A small plate of salad before starting the meal. 1 bran chappati with 1 k vegetable ( any vegetable not rajmah, channa or kadhi)
8:30 pm – one fruit of your wish

When this week ends, weigh yourself again. I’m sure u must have lost weight. I lost 1.8kgs in the first week itself. U lose the max in this week because you lose all the water weight and the bloating is gone. The further weeks you are surely going to lose weight but it won’t be this much.

Now to the next week.
Week 2

8:00 am (as soon as you wake up) – 2 glasses of tulsi leave water ( soak 5 tulsi leaves in 2 glasses of water. Strain out the leaves and drink the water.) 5 soaked almonds with the skin. 1 kali mirch.
9:00 am – 1 toast (brown bread) with amul lite butter / hung curd dressing/ salad and chutney
11:30 am – one fruit of your wish

1:30 pm – A small plate of salad before starting the meal. 1 sandwich (2 brown breads with paneer filling, if you are a vegetarian and egg whites, if you are a non vegetarian.)
5:00 pm – 1cup of milk or tea with 2 biscuits

7:30 pm –A small plate of salad before starting the meal. 1 bran chappati with 1 k vegetable (this week you can take rajmah, channa or kadhi )
8:30 pm – one fruit of your wish
This week I lost just .9kgs

Week 3

8:00 am – 2 glasses of methi seeds water. 5 soaked almonds with the skin. 1 kali mirch.
9:00 am – 1 glass of milk and a fruit
11:30 am – one fruit of your wish

1:30 pm – 1 bran chappati and any vegetable
5:00 pm – 1cup of milk or tea with 2 biscuits/ 1 small bowl bhuna channa/ 1bowl popcorn (not the buttery act 2 ones but air popped popcorns without the butter)
7:30 pm – 3 pcs steamed or roasted chicken or fish + salad (non vegetarians)

Any one of the following for vegetarians:
1. 1 bowl dal .+ 1 bowl curd + salad
2. 1 bowl veg + 1 bowl curd + salad
8:30 pm – one fruit of your wish

Week 4

8:00 am – 2 glasses of methi seeds water. 5 soaked almonds with the skin. 1 kali mirch.
9:00 am – 1 glass of cold coffee and a bb toast
11:30 am – one fruit of your wish
1:30 pm – This week you have a lot of options which you can take alternatively.

  1. 1 bowl sprouts + fruits
  2. 2 bowl vegetables + salads
  3. 1 bowl dalia + 1 bb toast
  4. 1 bowl vegetables + 1 bb toast
  5. 1 bowl kadhi + 1 quarter plate rice

5:00 pm – 1cup of milk or tea with 2 biscuits/ 1 small bowl bhuna channa/ 1bowl popcorn (not the buttery act 2 ones but air popped popcorns without the butter)
7:30 pm – 1 bran chappati and 1 bowl vegetable.
8:30 pm – one fruit of your wish

By the end of the month you will definitely lose 3-6 kgs I lost 4.3 kgs in a month with PCOD. I’m sure u can do better.
He also gave me some really good gyan as well. According to him when on a diet your social life won’t stop but you can still manage your weight without locking yourself at home. Some pointers for it:

  1. When you go out with friends try to have your lunch or dinner at subway. The healthiest option out there. Take a veggie delite sub in brown bread and eating out won’t harm your diet and weight at all. Tell them not to put mayo in it though.
  2. If you don’t have a say in the place of eating then make your choices sensibly. If you go to eat Chinese have rice rather than noodles. Order stir fried veggies instead of Manchurian. And control your proportions. Don’t take fried starters. Avoid those thick soups they are no good.
  3. When going out just pick 2 fruits before sitting in the car and eat it on your way to the venue. When you are already a little filled before going out. Your somewhat filled stomach helps your mind take the right decision.
  4. If eating Indian, order tandoori chappati rather than butter naan or parantha. Take less gravy since it is the most fattening.

Even if you don’t want to lose weight keep these points in your mind and you will be able to maintain your weight easily.

So go on a diet now and get your svelte figure back.

  3. Hey Priyanka, is it okay if I replace the morning toast with a fulka/roti?
    Is there any difference in the calories?

    1. Mrunmayee it would be best if you stick to the plan. but if you really dont like bread then you can substitue it with a bran roti but make sure that its a small and light roti not a heavy one..

      I liked bread in the breakfast because having bran roti in all the 3 meals would get monotonous..

    it’s good to hear that you’ve been losing weight through this diet plan. i gained and then lost a lot of weight doing nothing in particular. all thanks to hormones i guess!
    i didn’t know that there was a common misconception among people that diets are based on blood groups. where did that come from?!
    as far as dieting is concerned, can’t do it! i don’t like fried stuff and neither do i like fizzy drinks. good for me eh? but i am a slave to my taste buds and lack vegetables in my diet. boo!

  5. This diet is superb, even i had joined Shikha Sharma’s program. I followed it pretty dilligently and I lost 8.2 kgs in one month. I was so damn happy for the entire month and weighing machine was my best friend…….
    Then ofcourse I stopped it and as no more weight loss was required.
    It brought in some discipline in my life but there is a word of caution …..I was also told to have Chapattis mixed with Wheat Bran and it just became a way of life… body got habitual of getting so much of fiber that when I stopped mixing it in my chapatti for a few months as I wasn’t home and didn’t have the luxury of having food according to my whims and fancies I had consti******
    So my suggestion would be to stick with natural fiber like fruits etc and not adding bran to chapattis.

    1. One of my friends was following that diet and god it was awful.. living on onion roti one day, then fruits without salt the other and panner diet for another 2 days.. god i can never do that..

      Even im addicted to the bran rotis now, not had a normal chappati from dont know how long.. but if im out or sumthing *touches wood first* havent experienced consti****** ever..

      You know sometimes when you stay out the junk food and the lack of vegetables in diet and the heavy food you get from outside could also become one of the reason for const*****..

      1. Onion Roti…yuck! I’m a non vegetarian and had requested them to have a lot of non vegetarian food along with vegetarian. Luckily I was never told to have all that..I could have roasted chicken, missi roti(which I like). I mean the diet was pretty much like what you have written. I guess it depends from person to person….And i had consti****** as I didn’t have chapattis with bran for about 3 months when I wasn’t at home, my diet was devoid of any junk food whatsoever just had plain wheat flour chapattis with veggies…not having it for once a while won’t affect. Again I guess it might vary from person to person and it did affect me 🙁

      1. please don’t visit or opt for shahpur jat center , you wont loose even one kg…and they’ll ask you to have green mong dal in morning , lunch and evening …i turned sick with the diet plan….. maybe other center are fine but pls totally avoid this one.

Thats the whole idea of this diet ”LIFESTYLE CHANGE”.. it actually affects your skin as well i got such nice skin and all. because eliminating the junk and having 2-3 servings of fruit and all good foods does makes a difference.. And the best part is that when you are doing something you know is good for you, you actually feel really light and happy. But when you step onto the weighing machine and notice the pounds melting that is some other worldly bliss..

        1. Yes drinking hot water is believed to eliminate toxins from our body and increase the metabolic rate as well. But i feel two glasses of it is sufficient you dont need to have it all the time.

          Totally true.. coconut water helps a lot in water retention and also it balances the electrolytes in human body. The most healthy drink out there with the least calories.

    1. Your welcome Renuca.. The peppercorns help in absorption of Vitamin B and many other nutrients. Enhances metabolism leading to weight loss. Helps with bloating and flatulence, prevents bacterial growth in the intestines. Pepper also helps to stimulate the secretion of digestive juices or hydrochloric acid which is responsible for breaking down protein in the stomach. If we don’t make enough hydrochloric acid, we develop conditions like poor digestion, heartburn or symptoms of indigestion.Has antioxidants. So this little tiny kali mirch has a lot of benefits for our health.

  19. i want to do this diet. But i wake up early morning and prefer having a fruit on waking up since i workout at the gym and need the energy . Also i eat a fruit after workout.

    1. hi Sunita , with ur working hrs u can prepone the whole schedule instead of 8 start at 5.30 or 6 am ,carry ur fruit to school n also pack ur lunch.Can have ur tea the moment u come home n then dinner n fruit . Im also a working lady rather a doctor with very erratic schedules but i make it a point to carry my tiffins

I have tried everything and anything, I have lost 15 kg but now since two months its all constant no wt loss whatsoever! x( I cant digest milk so i have 2 roti veg in mrning, 1 fruit at 11, lunch 2 roti+dal+salads in lunch, 3pm 1 fruit,5 1 tea with oats biscuits, 8 2roti+veg+salad. have green tea all day through and hot water. i have no constipation problems so all well in dat way. i will folow this as well and see.I have 15kgs still to lose:( i dnt knw what to do wedding in jan n now m all nervous!

    daily morning i ll do yoga for an hour and 15 mim meditation and i ll also tak dumbells for 7min..

Thanks a lot to u…but in the second week i m unable to follow diet properly …i get tempted…. sometimes i jus loose the tempo and start eating without caring about weight….specially when i am upset or not in a gud mood… :silly: pls suggest me something to control and can we have a diet holiday on Sunday’s???

    1. hi aagnya.. i thought to reply you. sorry if u feel this wrong actually i have the same problem.. when i got upset or iritated i loose my control. i had not yet follow this diet but i keep following different yes to control cravings is really difficult. i can only suggest yes you can have a diet holiday but just once in a week but can cover it with little extra workout next day if u do any(as i do same). and u can keep the diet so flexible that there will be no requirement to break it. like some intresting ideas.. bye tk cr

    But i like to follow your diet its easy to follow and very convenient for me.

    i have been following this diet chart from gone 3 days. Albeit,there has been certain tweaking.
    I go for brisk walking, followed by jogging and some yoga and exercises to reduce by belly fat.(around-1 hr:20 mins in all)
    i take almonds and methi water and pepper as per your guidance.
    Take 2 toast with salads.
    Do not take chapatti and dal for lunch but soaked grams,moong and peanuts.
    Do you think these would help. Please guide , as i do not see any loss in my weight yet..:(
    For evening i take my dinner by 9:00 PM, as i return quite late from the office to dine at 7:30 PM.

  55. Hi Rati – I have put on lots of weight without any reason. My doctor checked my thyroid, PCOS, sugar, etc etc. Everything is negative, so she suspected that I might be insulin resistent which is making it hard to lose weight. Now that I have your diet, I am going to give it a shot.

      I have almost similar case. I can understand your condition. It has been six months to my delivery. I was 72.5 after delivery and not reducing even half Kg. I made some changes in my diet after reading this blog and started doing 30 min exercise in the office since 10 Aug, 2012. During this period, I had to eat outside for 4-5 days due to some family outings but still I reduced 3 KGs and now I am stuck at 69.5 Kgs. Lets hope for the best.

    Firstly accept my heart felt thanks for posting this diet plan. Being vegetarian with strict indian palate and living overseas , it has been impossible to get a diet plan that includes chapati ,dal subzi etc. Today is my fifth day of third week on the diet and although I have not weighed myself yet, i can feel the clothes fitting more easily already. Like so many others I request you to post or email me the second month’s eating plan. Also since I do not have access to tulsi , i had two options ….one continue with methi seeds or use basil. I opted the first one. Can u also suggest a substitute for paneer…i just used hommus…. hope to hear from u soon… lotsa love …Taruna

Hey All, read all of ur blogs actually looking for sum help myself..i have been overweight all my life ya in between for mayb 2 yrs lost weight and attained a perfect shape with lots of exercise and diet …..but now after marriage n tight work schedule i m unable to work out at all.I have been following a diet from ages like you all have mentioned but i guess my body has got used to eating less and no difference is seen at all. I am also unable to workout but thinking of buying a treadmill and starting for very half an hr….but do i have to make some changes in my diet plan..?     Hey I am planning to start a diet from Sunday and I have couple questions…

    First of all I want to ask if I have to soak a methi over night to drink in the morning..?? and I also want to know if I have to stick with the same timings of the diet schedule or can change the timings… I work from 8AM in the morning so I wanted to know if I can have that methi water with almond and black paper at 6 in the morning..??
    I also want to know if it is fine to just walk/run for 30 to 40 mins instead of following other exercise like skipping and breathing… Because of the busy schedule of my work.

    Your plan sounds great, have a couple of questions,
    I have been taking this drink from some time , it claims a lot of health benefits, but does this also help with weight reduction
    A glass of milk, 3-4 soaked/ skinned almonds/ pinch of black pepper powder / pinch of Cinnamon powder and honey. Blend and have it in the morning.
    Most of the ingredients here are essential for weight reduction, does combining it all help further.

    I am insulin resistant too… have tried my hand at the gym / yoga/ surya namaskars/ swimming, but i have not been able to lose weight at all. Will this help me ?

    Do you have any special tips for this routine as well.
