How To Make Body Lotion Bars at Home

Hi Everyone,

How have you’ll been? It’s been some time since I last wrote a post here. Each time I think of being regular on IMBB, something or the other comes up and my plans are foiled. So, now I have decided to set up monthly targets, instead of daily targets. I promise to write a few articles every month, so that I remain in touch and you guys don’t forget me. 😉

How To Make Body Lotion Bars at Home

Moving on to the DIY, it is a simple one that you can try at home. I had made these body lotion bars or as I like to call them ‘Barfis‘ some time back, and I’m ready to share the recipe with you guys. Are you ready? Here, we go.

Things You Will Need:

1. Coconut oil – 4 Teaspoons (I used Parachute Coconut Oil)
2. Shea Butter – 2 Teaspoons

3. Almond Oil – Half a Teaspoon
4. Lavender Oil – 3 to 4 Drops
5. Rose Powder – Half a Teaspoon (optional)
6. Saucepan (for melting the oil and butter)
7. Container to store these bars/barfis

Procedure:

1. Heat the saucepan and melt the coconut oil.
This would be required as coconut oil becomes solid during winters.

2. Add Shea butter to it and allow to melt.
This should take about three to five minutes.

3. Once this is done, take the saucepan off the stove and add the almond oil, lavender oil and rose powder to this lotion.

4. In case you are running short of time, you could empty this lotion immediately into a container. It would slightly harden at room temperature. However, once you take it in your hands, it will be soft and would melt.

If you have some extra time and love to experiment like me, place the saucepan in the refrigerator and allow the lotion to cool for approximately one to two hours. Please note that for this step, you would initially have to place the saucepan outside till it attains room temperature.

5. After two hours, remove the saucepan from the refrigerator and you will see that the lotion has nicely hardened. It is now ready to be cut into bars or barfis.

6. Take a knife and slowly make lines on the lotion. This step requires a little patience. This is actually similar to what we do when we make edible barfis. The only difference is that, here the barfis melt a little because of the oils. However, you can still manage to cut them into desired shapes.

The barfis are now ready to be used as lotion bars.

Alternatively, you could also pour the lotion into cupcake or cookie molds and refrigerate them. I haven’t tried this method out, but this is just something that I thought of while penning down this article.

I had made roughly about 15 to 20 bars/barfis with this recipe and they should last me for a month, if I use them daily.I have been using these barfis for about one to two weeks now, and I have found them really useful for the winters. My skin tends to become dry and itchy during the winters and it requires a lot of pampering. These barfis are well suited for this purpose.

I rub them onto my skin after my shower and it keeps my skin soft and supple throughout the day. Please note that these bars may melt easily in the summers and may even feel a bit sticky on the skin. Hence, they are best suited for winters. The benefits of all the ingredients are well known to us, and hence I am not mentioning them here.

I hope you’ll like this DIY and will try it out. Do let me know your feedback and suggestions.

  1. Nice post vidya! But Coconut oil is comedogenic..so wont suit my skin!. Can you suggest any substitute for coconut oil! And can you please from where did you buy shea butter from! Thanks 🙂

  2. Thanks, Akshata ☺ I bought shea butter from ebay.in You could try Argan oil or Jojoba oil instead of coconut oil. I haven’t tried it myself, though.

    1. Akshata…in case you replace coconut oil with any other oil, you should increase the amount of Shea butter because coconut oil would usually solidify at room temp but not the other oil.

  3. Vidya how do you store these lotion bars?I had made it using beeswax, Shea butter and coconut oil some time back. I have kept it in a zip pouch and it is not so hygienic!
