This is my first Do-It-Yourself post here. Today, I am going to share a DIY coconut milk shampoo recipe for curly/dry hair. Curly hair looks beautiful but managing them is not an easy task, really!!! I am well aware of all the frizziness and dryness that comes naturally with curly hair. But once you discover the recipe for maintaining your curls, then world seems so beautiful. 🙂
The principle rule of managing curly, dry hair is using a mild shampoo. I have always been experimenting with hair products to find out the best one for my hair type. Then, I decided to make a gentler version of my regular shampoo and came up with “Coconut Milk Shampoo.”
Ingredients:
1. Empty bottle (preferably a transparent one)
2. Coconut milk – 1/4th part
3. Your favorite shampoo – 1/3rd part
4. Castor oil – 1 teaspoon
5. Olive oil – 1 teaspoon
6. Lavender oil – 8-10 drops
(You can use a measuring flask to measure the exact amount of ingredients; I marked the bottle with a marker instead).
Method:
Step 1:
Fill 1/4th of the empty bottle with coconut milk (I used Chang’s coconut milk). You can also make it at home by grinding coconut, but I found the process a bit messy, so I purchased it from the supermarket.
Step 2:
Pour 1/3rd your favorite shampoo in it (I used Garnier Fructis Strengthening Shampoo).
Step 3:
Add about 1 teaspoon of castor oil.
Step 4:
Add about 1 teaspoon of olive oil in the mixture.
(I poured the estimated amount of oils directly; did not measure them by spoon, as it was a bit difficult to pour oils in the bottle through teaspoon).
Step 5:
Add 8-10 drops of lavender oil.
There you go!! Your coconut milk shampoo is ready to use. Use it as your regular shampoo and you will surely notice the difference.
Benefits:
- The main ingredient Coconut milk being extremely rich in proteins is very helpful in making hair soft and healthy. Moreover, it is natural, so it has no harmful effects.
- Castor oil is very beneficial in new hair growth, protects the scalp from drying.
- Olive oil acts as a great conditioner.
- Lavender oil will bring out a unique fragrance in your shampoo.
- Cost effective milder shampoo for curls.
Tips:
- Avoid adding too much of lavender oil, as it may cause discomfort to your senses.
- If you use lesser shampoo than coconut milk, you won’t get much lather while washing your hair.
- You can also add vitamin E oil/1-2 capsules in it.
- You can also replace lavender oil with any other essential oil of your choice.
- Shake well before use.
- You can keep this shampoo for about one month in the shower.
I am using this DIY coconut milk shampoo for a few months now and I just love my hair after every hair wash. I hope you guys will like it too!!
Here, I have washed my hair with coconut milk shampoo and then used a conditioner after that.

Hi Priyanka,
Good DIY recipe…. I have wavy hair which tend to become dry as well as frizzy after i wash them. Hence I need to oil them, keep them overnight and wash it the next day…. So do u think this fab shampoo will benefit my hair type??
With best wishes
Kirti
Okay, so I see what happened here 😛
I really like your hair, Priyanka! 🙂 🙂 I will try making this in tiny quantities and using it on my hair soon. I have curly hair too, and I like experimenting with it.
I have one question though; how will this stay fresh for a month even with the coconut milk in? I mean, won’t it go rancid or something? I really am a dunce, I don’t know much about how well coconut milk holds up in such a recipe, so I’m asking 😀
And, okay, okay, I have two questions; if I don’t add any essential oils, will it smell okay or will it smell bad?
Thanks 😀 😀
And Jomol, I wondered how come we finally got to see you 😛 😛 😀 And by popular demand, we want to see your piccy on here too!!! *puchhi* *puchhi* And we know you’re pretty, so no use trying to hide it! 😛
thank u samantha.. It has been in my shower for about a month with no ill-effects. 🙂 and i don’t think it will smell bad without essential oil in it though i haven’t tried it. If you do, please tell us how did it go. Btw I read your articles on your everyday hair care routine. I really love your curls *hifive*
