How to Make Mehendi Dark and Long Lasting

by Moomal P.

Mehendi holds an immense importance in our culture whether it is the bridal mehendi or Karwachauth, Holi, Diwali, Rakhi. No occasion is complete without this. We also relate the color of mehendi as a parameter of love. I myself like mehendi so much that I apply it on my hands on every occasion. Applying mehendi designs is an art in itself. We spend money on getting those beautiful designs but if it doesn’t give the required color all money goes in vain. Also if the design doesn’t stay for long it hurts 🙂 . So today I will be providing you with some tips as to how you can make your mehendi look dark in shade and make it last long.

kiara mehendi

Celebrity mehendi artist Veena Nagda who applied Deepika Padukone’s mehendi is rumored to be Kiara Advani’s mehendi artist as well and has reportedly flown to Jaisalmer already.

Before applying Mehendi you should be clear on which designs you want on your hands so that at the end you are not stuck on something you don’t like. For best results you should use the home prepared mehendi but if that is not possible you should ask the mehendi artist to use good quality mehendi so that you get good results.

  1. Apply mehendi 1 or 2 days before the occasion. Its give the darkest shade after this duration so on your occasion your hands will look nice.
  2. It’s better to keep mehendi for long duration (maximum 12 hours). Best idea is to sleep with it and take it off in morning. It’s proven if you keep it for long you are prone to get better color.
  3. Warm some cloves in a pan and place your hand over it to get the smoke on your hand for the dark color. Remove your hand when it starts hurting.
  4. After mehendi dries a bit apply a mixture of lemon and sugar over it (powered sugar may also be used).
  5. When mehendi is fully dried out remove it completely and apply Vicks or pickle oil on it.
  6. Do not wash you hand after removing mehendi for at least 12 hours. Washing hands might lighten the mehendi color and you will end up having a light shade mehendi.
  7. Use the sugar and lemon mixture in required amount. Overdoing it might spoil your design.

I hope the tips mentioned will be helpful. Once you get that dark color, your hands will look so beautiful that no one around you will be able to refrain themselves from giving you compliments 🙂 and you can enjoy this for many days with the long lasting tricks of mehendi. Put in use these tricks and do let me know how your mehendi magic worked.

  1. I just loooooooove Mehandi a lot. My nani makes me put some oil from mango pickle to enhance the color and I guess, that works too. 🙂

  2. Great post Moomal. But the most annoying parts of applying mehendi for me will always be sitting still through the application and removing it.

  3. I wanna share the best tip. As soon as mehendi has dried, i just scrape it off (without water) and apply a layer of lime paste (chuna paste tubes that u get it at pan shops). As soon as u apply this limestone paste, your mehendi will darken instantly. Then u can scrape that layer off in a few minutes. Its just magic! I call this as the lazy girl’s mehendi 😀 😀 hehheee

    1. Hi Jyoti,

Thats a nice tip but chuna paste sometimes doesn’t suit everyone and also if while taking off mehendi you get some rash (if mehendi is not good quality) chuna might burn it more .

  4. I love mehndi…and I love its smell. But nowadays I feel the mehndi that mehndi artists use does not give very dark colour. Also, they suggest not to put lemon and sugar and to take off the mehndi once it dries. I don’t really know why!
When I apply mehndi next I am gonna keep these tips in mind definitely! Thanks Moomal. 🙂

  5. Yes, the mehendi artist use many chemicals in mehendi so I prefer to use mehendi which is trusted and prepared at home. Also the design fades away so quickly as if it was meant to be just for the occasion day 😛

    1. How do you prepare your own mehndi moomal? Do you get the powder from somewhere and then make a paste or do you do to from the leaves directly?

      1. Bhawana the perks of being rajasthani is used her… 😉 you must have heard of the name sojat in rajasthan and the henna is very popular of this place. My mother in law’s relative bring Sojat’s mehndi to us and I use that.I use the power only.

  6. gr8 tips!! I usually follow all of dis…. I wuld like to add 2 more to dis…

    1. Try to avoid sleeping in air conditioned rooms.
    2. Avoid applying mehendi on cuts!!( trust me on this my mom had to get an operation done on her palm)
