How To Mix and Match Darker and Lighter Foundation Shades To Get Your Perfect Shade

Amigo beautifuls,

Winter is the most appropriate season to best utilize your foundation. Summer is tough and really hot in most parts of Asia and we prefer going out with pressed powders and BB creams rather than wearing foundation; however, people living in cold regions are blessed with the opportunity to wear makeup all year round:D. When we begin our journey in the makeup fantasy world as a newbie or do the terrible mistake of picking up a foundation online with no or few reviews and swatches, we end up picking a wrong shade most of the times.  I did the same mistake, these both foundations were online picks and the Neutrogena’s Health Mix foundation (cream) is quite dark for my NC-30 skin tone and Luscious Oil Free Foundation (liquid) is disastrously light! As you see, one is a cream foundation and one is in liquid form, I will show you a DIY today to not only mix and match shades, but also make use of two different consistency foundations.

Things you will need:

  • Two foundations (those you want to make use of).
  • A container to mix and store, preferable glass container.
  • Small mixing spoon.
  • Hot water bath/microwave.
  • Pair of tongs (not mandatory).

How To Make:

Step 01: Keep the hot water bath ready, I couldn’t take clicks of it because the steam blurred the screen. The water level should not be more than 1 inch depth for a small container. You can make use of microwave too, but I prefer to keep my cosmetics and food away from microwave rays as much as I can.

Step 02: Scoop out some cream foundation and it keep carefully in hot water bath. It will melt in 3-5 minutes, depending on the amount of product you have scooped. I prefer mixing small amounts in one go. A microwave will do the melting job in 30 seconds.

Step 03: When the cream foundation melts, carefully take out the container from hot water. You can use a small pair of tongs as glass container may be warm enough and if you drop it, it will get messy and stick to the dropping surface. While the foundation is in a liquid state, pour in few drops (I added 3 drops) of liquid foundation and mix it. The quantities actually depend on the shades you own; 1-2 trials can easily yield desired results.

Step 04: Swatch the foundation on jaw line and check in day light for the shade. If it’s still dark for your skin, add a small amount of the lighter shade and if it has got lighter than your liking, add the darker foundation and melt in hot water bath again. Let the mixture of foundations cool down.  I will suggest going slow on the liquid foundation while mixing. Once it is done, you can use a blow dryer to set it for an even surfaced finish in the container (I skipped the step because of time restriction).  Once it cools down, the foundation mix will have a soft cream consistency.

Directions For Use:

Use as a regular foundation, blend with fingers, sponge or your favourite brush. It will serve you best for everyday use or keeping in purse for days when you have stepped out in a rush from home holding a sandwich and coffee in hand and then you have to get touch ups in the office.  My past two weeks have been completely dedicated to online shopping for cosmetics. When you pick up stuff for reviews particularly, choosing stuff and looking for review availability becomes time consuming. I will be back with product reviews soon. Till then, take good care 🙂
