How to Reuse Your Wedding Lehenga?

Hello Ladies,

Weddings are something we Indian’s are obsessed with. We do count money while buying vegetables but we spend with free hands on weddings. We buy the heaviest and mostly the costliest dress of our life for our wedding. And wedding lehenga is something which is the most expensive dress one buys but never ever wears it again. Some time we don’t wear it as we don’t want to repeat it and sometimes we feel it will be too gaudy for an event. So let me share some ways which will help you use your wedding lehenga time and again.

How to Reuse Your WeddingLehenga

Change to modern blouse or kurta: Mostly the wedding blouses are very traditional looking, with lots of work and latkans. So to reduce the bling go for a plain blouse made of velvet. If you are comfortable sporting sleeveless blouses then go for them, as such blouses add a bit modern touch on the whole attire. Or else you can chuck the blouse completely and can go for a mid length kurta, that will give your lehenga an old world charm. And if you are someone who likes edgy style and want to be the head turner at some cocktail party then go for a blazer in place of blouse and skip the duppata.

• Get a long sheer jacket: You must have seen the long sheer jacket over lehenga look on ramps, and you can transform your own wedding lehenga into one such lehenga you saw on ramp by adding a pastel shade seer jacket on. You can either wear one on tip of your blouse or can go for a jacket which has coverage at right place and skip the blouse. This seer jacket will cover the bling of the skirt without hiding the work on it completely. It will also give a gown kind of look to the lehenga.

• Make anarkali out of it: If you are someone who is not very fond of lehenga and feels more comfortable in salwar kurti or anarkali then turn your wedding lehenga into an anarkali. Just get the skirt attached with the blouse and get some nice zaree placed on the stitching part. Zaree will give a definition to waist and will also cover up the stitching. You can get a matching salwar or legging for same or if you want to do some more experiment with the look then put a matching plaint skirt underneath in place of salwar. This way you will get a beautiful anarkali with lots of work on it made out of your wedding lehenga.

• Get plain skirt with wide border: If your skirt is too heavy, which mostly stops you from wearing your wedding lehenga again, but the duppata and blouse are something that you love and have heavy work then give break to the actual skirt and get a new skirt stitched in silk or net kind of fabric. Go for a plain skirt with some jaree border or plain golden/silver border so that the work on your blouse will stand out. This way you will be able to partially use the wedding lehenga and won’t feel heavy or uncomfortable too.

• Make blouse out of duppata: If you don’t want to use the whole lehenga and have no problem against putting it under scissors then this can be a good bet for you. Especially if your lehenga is quite old, out of fashion and not something you would like to wear as it is then you can get a blouse made from your wedding lehenga dupatta. Wedding lehenga dupattas mostly have heavy embroidery or stone work on it and they have beautiful borders too. Using this you can get a normal length or long length blouse made, which can be used with plain saree. Heavy blouse with contrasting plain saree will look very elegant for weddings and other functions too.

• Wear same lehenga with different draping style: Last but not the least, if your love your wedding lehenga so much that you don’t want to do any addition or deletion in it then just wear it as it is with different duppata draping style. As I have shown in my post 7 ways of draping lehenga duppata, the same lehenga looks different with different duppata draping. I have attached here my own wedding lehenga picture. Left hand side shows how I wore it on my wedding and right hand side is how I wore it on my first karwachauth. Same lehenga but it does look different right. Also use different accessories and hairstyles too to stand out each time.

  2. Great post Sweta! Great ideas…really got me thinking on what could be done… I have lehengas and so many other untouched heavy sarees from my wedding trousseau which have been lying untouched since more than a decade. You put in some fab ideas to use them into something I am likely to wear today. Kudos to you for this post! *clap* *clap* *clap*

  3. or you can just use the heavy duppatta as saree pallu. use the duppatta as a pallu to make a new saree. attach/ get stiched 3 metres of crepe in contrast or same colour as dupptta for a new look. for the contrast colour get the border died as same colour of your lehenga duppata. use zari or tissue where you attach the pallu. for the lehenga get a plain duppta with tissue or zari border/
