6 Tips on How to Spring Clean Your Wardrobe

spring cleaning

Hiya Everyone. πŸ™‚

I spent 4-5 hoursΒ cleaning/editingΒ my wardrobe yesterday. I am yet to finish up doing my complete wardrobe but I have been able to sort out my shoes, accessories, bottoms and tops. It feels so awesome, I have no words to explain. πŸ˜› So I thought I’d share some tips on ‘how to spring clean your wardrobe’. Hope you find these tips useful. πŸ™‚

  1. Let go of the clothes that you have not worn in past 6-7 months. If you have not worn them in such a long thime, it is highly probable that you won’t wear them in the long run as well.
  2. Let go of clothes that are either too small or too big for you. Especially in my case I had stocked up on so many big sizes because I was scared that I would need them if I put on weight again. Honestly, I dont think I am going to let that happen to me again. πŸ˜› Just stocking up a ton of wrong sizes in your wardrobe would only create chaos and confusion.
  3. Let go of clothes that may have developed holes or have been damaged – no matter how much you love those pieces.
  4. Color co-ordinate your wardrobe. I find that tip super useful.
  5. Fold / roll and stack your daily wear tees on the shelves. They really don’t need to be hung on the hangers.
  6. Get your woolen clothes dry cleaned / washed and stack them away in big suit cases or bed boxes. Throw some Β naphthaleneΒ balls / air freshners. This way you would have only those clothes in your wardrobe that are to be worn during that season. No chaos. πŸ˜›

So these are my quick tips. If you have more of them , please share them in the comments below. πŸ™‚

  1. Rati..very true is ur 1st point..i genrally get rid of those stuff whihc i dont use for say 4-5 months..I know i will never use them..
and every time i keep them aside, my mom advises me πŸ™ πŸ™‚

    1. one thing i wud want to share..though its nt related to wardrode organising..
I have the habit of picking up the dress ,matching accesories & makeupstuff the prev night, before i hit bed..so tat the nxtday morning i wud not waste time standing infront of the cupboard ,wasting time thinking abt wat to wear..
      Trust me..this saves time.. πŸ™‚

      1. thanks for the tip rama. I dont even want to mention how I get ready. loll!! standing and staring at the wardrobe is one of the many thing i do before getting ready. loll!!

    2. yeah rama. I have learnt it the hard way. my wardrobe goes insane and when I have to wear something i end up not finding it. so it’s best to keep it lean and clean. πŸ™‚

      1. I get ready very early to office..around 6 in the morning..so i m used with this..and i follow this no matter hw tired i’m in d evening..

        1. Omg Rama I do the same exactlyyy… Always i keep my dress and accessories (sometimes my eye pencils too ;)) ready the previous night itself as it saves my time in the morng.. even i had to reach office around 6.30 early in the morning πŸ™

  2. Nice post..u reminded me to clean my wardrobe asap..mom keeps on shouting to do it and i am too lazy..Wil do dis weekend..Useful tips:)

  3. you know i have stocked up sooo many clothes in a hope to wear them one day… n that day never comes… n this way i am always short of space in my wardrobe. πŸ˜› but i need a bigggg heart to let go… πŸ™ πŸ™

    1. I know what you mean but you know I always think that atleast someone else would wear it and find use for something that is useless for me. that helps me let go. πŸ™‚

  4. HOla Rati.. Good morning .. was wondering whr hav u been ??….good tips .. even i need to stack away winter stuff.. … it seems like a task… motivated now.. i agree.. it’s such a relief when evrything is organised.. and hhahaha no chaos … and with a wadorbe like urs.. organising is major help πŸ™‚ .. i am gonna raid mine today for sure ..will make some space to buy new ones hahhha.

    1. I took an off yesterday so just chilled out. πŸ™‚ And that’s what I did. Super excited . It’s like I am so sorted out and light in my head. πŸ˜› all the best. :)) I am an organization junkie. I keep organizing things every now and then. Works like a therapy for me. πŸ˜›

  5. good tips Rati. I dont like to let go of things easily so what i have started doing is i move clothes which i really like and dont use (never feel like throwing these out) to a box and keep it in another wardrobe so that way my daily wear clothes are not messed up. The other thing is that i separate my clothes by keep the salwars, leggings together; my kurtas/kurtis together; and my tshirts together. This way i can pick and choose. The good salwars sets/ trousers and formal shirts I hang on hangers. my sarees are usually on hangers and some in saree boxes. My shoes are in another cupboard. I had put up a post of my jewelry which is basically keeping all the similar colored ones together in boxes.

    1. i agree aruna. I also keep my things separated and color co-ordinated. I just donate my clothes. It feels good and keeps my things sorted. Initially I used to hold back but slowly I am learning. :))

    2. Hey Aru.. i have your tip in mind and is in the to do list. i have loads of earings and many of which i have alsmost forgotten. so was planning to organize them your way by keeping similar coloured ones together. in search of sleek boxes actually..

      1. πŸ™‚ Transparent pouches are nice where you can see the stuff inside BUT if you can find different pouches/boxes in different colors, then all the Reds can go into the Red box/pouch, blues in one etc..that way looking at the color of the box/pouch you know what color jewlery is inside. πŸ™‚

  6. These are some really good tips.. I just did my winter clothes last weekend.. I always try getting rid of my over or under sized clothes but the thing is 1) I love some of them and nvr have the heart to get rid of them & 2) I lose and gain weigth very fast so end up using some of them.. but will still try to do that.

As far as accessories organizing is concerned, this is wht I do – I order a lot of things online (after reading reviews here πŸ˜€ & otherwise) and they come in really nice sturdy boxes. I wrap these boxes with nice packing papers or nice old magzine pages or fashion section of newspaper & with a marker write bangles, earnings, neckpeices, anklets, lipsticks, lipbalms, pallets, etc. on them and thn keep them in my dresser.. it makes things super easy for me.. anyone cn try tht..

    1. lovely tips deepika. I keep them in open organizers and then inside my dresser. But labeling sounds super fun. i’d try that. :)) Thanks for sharing. πŸ™‚

I have kept on pair of jeans that is bigger in size so when I am bloated or stuff, i am pull it out. πŸ˜€

      1. Rati I have asked this before also.. asking again.. whenever I leave a comment on some post and someone replies to it, I am unable to follow it up as I get lost.. is there any notification system or anything that is there or I just need to keep a tab on my own??

  7. Awesome dear.. πŸ™‚ today only I ws cleaning my kachra wardrobe mixed wid myvclothes, baby nappies n many more.. :p need to devote one more day and stack clothes as per ur idea.. πŸ™‚ bt the prblm is I hv too big or too small clothes nt my size attires.. :p buhuuu. Seems its time for outfit haul.. lol..

    1. awww I myself hado so many wrong sizes in my wardrobe. i know I’d never wear them no matter what. So it’s best to let them go. πŸ™‚ all the best for your shopping haul. πŸ˜›

  8. Wow.. Rati, it’s a wonderful post .. i did this last week.. πŸ™‚ and I gave away a lot of stuff to other people who might still use it.. πŸ™‚

  9. Hey Rati.. loved your tips, just today morning i wrote this in my to do list to organize and bring out my summer wear this weekend.. there were a lot of clothes which i used during pregancy and they are big for me. like some good denims and tops.. i just got them altered from a tailor and they just fit me perfectly now.. feels nice that i am using them still.. other stuff which have gone completely out of shape i keep donating them..

  10. Rati..

These are such practical and doable tips. You are so right about the sizes and the ‘if not worn in 6 months’ thing. I buy smaller sizes hoping I would reduce.. but I hardly get to that level. πŸ™ But would keep a check on this now.

Also, Rati.. I want to ask a small favor. Can you please do a post for me on ‘how to pack for travel’. Rmbr I asked you once in comments if you plan your ‘entire’ outfit? I mean .. I travel here often to PB or to other islands for a weekend trip. While i decide my suits beforehand I find it so difficult to choose what slippers, watch etc to carry. How do you decide? Bcoz in my case while packing I want to keep less things but whne I reach there.. I feel I wish I had got the other sandal etc. How do you do it as you look picture perfect even on vacations.?

    1. surabhi, i personally feel that everyone spends time planning their outfits before travelling. I dont think i would exactly be able to tell you what shoes to pick with which outfits because I mostly go by my feel. there are so many outfit posts coming on IMBB. You may take clues from them and fit in your style. πŸ™‚ But I can show you how my suit case looks like after it is packed. And I am not a light traveller at all because i do fashion posts on my trips so I have to carry my complete outfits. I’d try doing a post though.

Here are some posts that may help you. πŸ™‚

      1. Thank youuuu… πŸ™‚ and I can understand.. if I have to carry complete outfits then yes, I have to carry multiple watches, sandals etc. Thanks for the links.. and I got the point too! Waiting for the post as well.. πŸ˜€

        1. hehehe Surabhi ji, question samajh mein nahin aaya… if Rati has to wear a watch with an outfit woh wahan par hawa mein prakat thode hi ho jayegi πŸ˜›

          1. Ha ha ha.. Yeah.. I now realize that my question was a lill weird. I basically wanted to know how to travel light and still carry a perfect ‘complete’ outfit.

Btw, Sanjeevji.. I am deliriously happy today. Got a major news.. shayad usi ki vajah se meri writing skills lad-khada gayi.. πŸ˜€

              1. Surabhi, i feel that packing for a trip, whether it is a small or long one, you should go by instinct. Planning a few days ahead is so important because you cannot carry all the stuff you have at home. Sorting out the stuff you would need at the trip is so essential. For me personally, packing for a trip (usually for 10 days) begins exactly a month before I travel. I keep the suitcases ready and fill it in through the course of the month. Planning before a trip is so important because you are only carrying only 1 or 2 suitcases at the max (in case of short trips, only one). I usually go for whole new clothes when I am travelling, shoes, and all. Its a habit I have right from childhood. Actually, even with such dedicated planning, I get nightmares that I havent’ carried enough on my trip πŸ™‚

  11. I have already packed my winter clothes my wardrobe was choked with sweaters and jackets and now I can see there is now space for summer clothes… πŸ™‚

  12. gr8 tips…surely need them as am relocating to pune in a fortnight…..do give us tips as to how to spring clean our cosmetic shelves too !!!!! πŸ™‚ πŸ˜‰

  13. Hey rati .. This article surely has wonderful tips was
Planning today itself to organise my wardrobe fr the season and yay u r post came up.. Will surely keep ur points in mind

  14. My wardrobe is always organized in segments similar to that of Aru’s.. Well I don’t have a separate cupboard for shoes here so I keep them individually wrapped up in poly bags and tuck them under oblivious spaces so that they don’t catch dust. I always keep a tshirt or kurta or any cloth in its own section after it comes back from the laundry so that no mess is created. Hope this helps.

  15. U mentioned right rati that we have to part with clothes that are ill fit, old and not worn since 6-7 months but i am having a weird problem, i cant part with my old clothes, everytime i look at them the old memories comes alive and then i keep them for the good old times sake…. due to this habit i am having a tons of clothes… and also i am hoping tht i got into them some day when i loose but tht never happen till date πŸ™

  16. Finished keeping the winter stuff but there is still organising the wardrobe and the kids section. Huge task huh. I keep my heavy outfits for special occasions in pouches in a separate shelf so know where to look when required. Also I keep daily wear and outwear in different wardrobe. same goes with accessories and watches too

  17. last tip is totally agreed upon
    as I follow the same.

apart from dat,I have a good stock of footwear, hard to stock dat. In my store room,I have a large drum of shoes πŸ˜›

shoe rack cannot accommodate my collection πŸ˜€

      1. lol…
u knw mom has warned me,not to buy a single pair now. only after I get married,I shall keep it in my new home πŸ˜› ha ha ha

  18. when it comes to make-up
I need to change my make up pouch/bag
it has become so heavy πŸ˜›
    courtesy:IMBB πŸ˜€

  19. Yayyy i understand the feel of having a sorted wardrobe.. I clean my wardrobe once in two months always and that helps me a lot!! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€
Well, always keep naphthalene balls between your dresses to keep weird smell away.. can also use the perfume bags (little pockets filled with some good smelling powder – we get it here in shops) as well πŸ™‚

  20. I just stacked my winter clothes in bed boxes and got out all my summer outfits…what a task it is!!! I’m seriously planning of getting rid of some old clothes bcoz i’m really bad at throwing stuff unless they have expired πŸ™ Cons of not-wasting-anything mindset i feel :-/

  21. Rati, I just love ur stuff whether dey are clothes, footwear or accessories or whatever ..
You are the most stylist person I knw so far …
I jus did lil bit of cleaning yesterday inly but putting some naphthalene balls is a great idea, will do dis … And i dont think you hv to kp ur clothes in any bag, i think
u hav a separate room for that bcuz u hav tonnnssss of clothesss πŸ˜€

  22. I have to do this!! what a rimely post :P.. just shifted back from hostel and everything is a mes.. i dont even know where my clothes are… will have to unpack all boxes and arrange everything from the scratch!
That coral and white lace thingy is sooo pretty..! πŸ™‚

  23. The comments are as lovely as the post πŸ™‚
I too cant throw away my old clothes .
    1. Because I have fond memories attached to them . Like , thisis the dress i stitched during my graduation days , saving money to buy that dress material I saw displayed in a shop .
    2. I have spend so much on buying it , I havent worn it enough times , now how can I throw it away ?
3 . Ye mere college ke dino ke kapde hai , kitne pyaare lagte hai . kaise phek doon ?
    4. Though old and out of fashion these clothes still fit me , why should i throw ( yes , i am audacious enough to wear out-of-fashion clothes hehe and its fun sometimes to flaunt around in old fashioned stuff )
    5. whom to give ? Biiiiiiiiig question

well , all the commenst and tips are so nice. And rati , like you i also stare at the wardrobe for looong time before getting ready and i atleast change into 3-4 dresses before i finalise one πŸ˜›
also , this stuff keeping things ready night before never works for me because jis din jo mood hoga wahi pehn na hai ! aaj synthetic nahi cotton hi pehna na hai . aaj pink nahi blue hi pehna na hai ! phir earrings ka confusion , phir , hair bow/hair clip/clutcher ka confusion phewwwwwwwwww πŸ™‚

  24. super duper helpful rati. i cleaned my wardrobe this weekend only but didn’t add naphthalene balls in the bed boxes. will buy them today only .
