Storing your Accessories 🙂
Many of us here own an enviable amount of accessories .As much we love buying them and have fun wearing them, storing them can be a big pain. Remember the time when a particular piece of accessory matched your outfit perfectly, but you couldn’t wear it for the simple reason that you couldn’t find it.
Ideally accessories should be stored by colour or pattern to make locating it easy. But since there is a long time till I own a walk through closet or that amount of jewellery to be classified by colour or pattern, I stick to normal storage so as not to damage them. So, I would like to share some tips on storing accessories and show you how I store mine. 🙂
Storing accessories needs a little bit of planning as to how they should be sorted and organised to make sure that we find them when we actually need them.
1. Belts – I own just two belts so storing them is not an issue for me. Ideally belts should be hung on one hook each, to avoid muddling of buckles. Stashing them in a drawer is not a good idea. The buckles tend to lose their shine due to scratching and rubbing together. Also the belts might get entangled lessening their life span. The pictures below show ideal storage options.
2. Bags– Bags need to be stored properly if we want them to last long. All expensive, or rather good quality bags come with their respective storage bags and it is best to keep them in those to protect from environmental damages like pollution and humidity. Also it is good to polish our leather bags once in a while to keep them new. I personally use Amway’s Leather & Vinyl cleaner to polish my leather bags.
Coming to the not so expensive ones, they are neatly stacked one on another. Clutches deserve special attention because they are not used often and are usually delicate. I happened to get the red bag with a wine bottle and have put it to good use. 😉
Here is what the bag section in my closet looks like –
3. Jewellery – Okay, this is the biggest challenge because we happen to own these more than belts or bags, or at least I do. For clarity sake, we divide jewellery into the following categories and then proceed to their storage.
• Trinkets – I have included all small jewellery here. Usually, they are delicate and expensive too. Storing them on a thin layer of cotton or a velvety box is good .It prevents damage due to friction and cotton prevents oxidisation, a good way to ensure your silver pieces stay intact.
I got this box with six varieties of handmade soaps, as a gift .You can take any compartmentalised box and make a cotton base to put the delicate items. It is not necessary to store such few items in each block. I did it just so that the picture comes out well. 😛 😛 Have multiple boxes and stack them.
• Necklaces– They deserve special attention so that they don’t break while entangled. Also the beads need to be wiped with cotton regularly to prevent build up of dust thereby scratching the surface causing it to lose shine. My beaded jewellery goes into a cute box I got from Spain. It is lined with velvet inside so I don’t have to bother lining it with cotton.
Each necklace is coiled up and stored, more like what you see in the second rack. And about the photo, sorry, I was just being filmy filmy types. 😐
The ones which you see above are delicate thus all the attention. The sturdy ones are hanged one on another on a hook on the inside of my closet door.
Three sets of hooks like these and most of my necklaces, baring the ultra delicate ones are sorted. It is important to keep an eye on wooden jewellery as they are prone to mites and insects. Never ever touch your wooden pieces with wet hands.
• Earrings – These again get divided into studs, danglers and loops and so on. We will try to store them in such a manner that locating them will be easier.
My studs go into this box I picked up from an exhibition, priced at just Rs.150 .It really doesn’t hurt to buy them. They are great for travel because of compactness. I picked all the pieces that lady had. Kept a few and gifted the others. It opens out flat and folds up to become a small rectangle. Super Easy to store and carry too.
I am a person who never throws away jewellery even if they are super outdated. So all the stuff I don’t wear often or I have grown out of goes into two hexagonal boxes picked up from a local shop for Rs.50 each.
Now, coming to jewellery I tend to reach out for more often. What I have done is just above where I have hung my necklaces, I put in two nails, cut up strips out of an old file, drew partitions ,punched it and my customised earring rack is ready. It is something like this.
So this is how the inside of my closet door looks in totality. You can customize according to your requirements.
• Bangles – They will be again glass bangles and metal bangles. They can be a huge mess with all the clanking sound, breakage and everything. Glass bangles are best stored in separate compartment type’s drawers or boxes. I personally do not like the tree branch out type bangle stands available, just one time it tumbles over from the dresser, everything breaks. A box or a special bangle drawer is much safer. I have very few glass bangles, so they go into my mom’s drawer. She has a bangle drawer which looks like –
It is great if you can find a carpenter and get a similar thing done; else you can hammer open a hanger and use it as a bangle stand. I took a metal hanger, opened the knot below the ‘c’ by using a hammer and a nail puller. Something like –
You can hang these hangers in a corner of your wardrobe. Its cheap and very useful.
So this was it, hope I made some sense because it would have been very boring with just explanation so I included pictures of how I store my stuff. Hope it proves useful to you. 🙂

i picked up original peacock feathers from rajasthan , cut them properly and gave to a sasta local jeweller to put the hooks 😐

Naina, i made a peacock feather earrings-necklace set too. i saw one on a US shopping site. they were very expensive. so,i made one myself.it’s very easy and peacock feather is so inexpensive naa? but they are very light. what do u do to keep them hanging straight? ?:) ?:)
bulbul , i cut up squares of old velvet fabric, like make a sandwich with the peacock feather in between the velvet (the fluffy said facing the feathers) and this way you can store it anywhere.. if u want to hang it then u can cut old strips and punch them to make a hanger kinda thing.
it is best to keep light weight stuff horizontally stored, rather than hanging it.
