How to Store Shoes : Shoe Storage

Storing your shoes!!

Cinderella is proof that shoes matter and matter a lot. So we all should own a lot of shoes. Period.

This is not my shoe closet, but how much do I pray that it was πŸ˜›

And just like every other good thing (think boyfriends), shoes also deserve care and attention. Because they carry our body weight, face the sad state of Indian roads almost daily. So here comes the maintaining and storage part. A lot of shoe care depends on how you store them; else they are no longer in their original shape and are left unwearable.

Keep in mind the following tips for, shoe maintenance –
1. Clean your shoes after each and every wear. Keep a semi hard brush. Brush the underside of the shoes so that no dust is there. Keep a soft cloth and wipe them. Since shoes have detailing like bows, buckles, clasps. A lot of time dust settles into them and the shoe life is reduced and its looks old.
2. A lot of people advise against it, but I have seen that keeping shoes in mild sunlight for 15-20 minutes, actually works. It kills bacteria, helps any sort of dampness / sweat go away. Be sure not to keep it for too long or they will get dehydrated and start flaking.
3. Leather needs polish on a regular basis; use a good quality leather vinyl.
Am not going much into details of maintenance because am pretty sure all of us maintain our shoes pretty well.
All of us might be having one shoe rack at least, but trust me that doesn’t suffice. So here come other ideas.

Shoe storage is a little tricky because you cannot stuff it in corners and just cannot stack them here and there keeping in mind hygiene issues. But its nothing that cannot be handled with a little intelligence.

β€’ Ideal Storage –

The ideal storage for shoes will be storing them in a shoe rack or shoe closet, of course. It gives ample breathing space to the shoes and looks more organised. Also if kept properly in racks, shoes are easier to locate and it saves a lot of hassle. Shoe racks are available in the market, nice design ones with a decent price tag. So finding them will not be that much of an issue. This is how one of my home’s shoe closets look like.

β€’ Drop Down Shoe Rack –

how to store shoes

I had seen this kind of a shoe rack at β€˜my dollar store’ for just 99/- rupees and god knows why I didn’t buy it then. :headbang:.

Anyway this is a great storage way. Just hang it behind the door or behind a partition and you are all organised. These don’t take the weight of heels and heavy shoes. Its best to store ballerinas and flip flops in them. You could find a spare corner and hang multiple of these hangers to have your own little walk through closet.

β€’ Store under hollow seatings/beds – This is a really nice space saving

way of keeping your shoes. You can make use of all hollow spaces under your beds, or under your dresser seating, like I have done. It is best not to keep stuff you regularly wear here, because it will be a pain taking them out so often .Store shoes you wear, once in a while, like only for weddings, or shoes that match with just one outfit so that it becomes easier for you. Here are pics of the seat in front of my dresser and how I can keep shoes inside it.

β€’ Store shoes in old blanket bags –

how to store shoes

I used to store my shoes in a blanket bag when I was staying as a paying guest in Pune. It is an easy and smart way to store stuff when space is really a constraint.

Blankets come in those transparent no, so just get one of them and put your shoes in transparent seal bags and store them flat in them. The beauty of this idea is that you can put a label on top or in front of the transparent bag saying which shoes you have in them. Also you can stack up one on another, thereby storing lots of shoes in a small rectangular space.
A tiny demo for you lovely people . πŸ™‚
This is the mess before –

And this is after you neatly arrange it in a blanket bag –
( I was doing this post at night, so sorry for the flash)

Taking out shoes and rearranging is easy because of the huge zipped mouth –

Well on a serious note, I have just one huuuuuuuuuuuuuge rack to keep my shoes, and hence what I do is I use the shoe dabbas to create steps in my rack…This has become really helpful in creating steps and using the space efficiently for storing my shoes :)) :))

      1. er..noo…There are like huuuge dabbas na..so I keep them vertical, with the hollow space facing towards my side. Just line them up in rows keeping some distance between each row..now you can keep a pair inside the hollow and one above it…just that instead of keeping it in normal way, you have to keep the shoes above the dabba in the dabba’s orientation!!! I donno how much clear I am with my explanation now!! :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ πŸ˜› πŸ˜› πŸ˜›

  7. Seriously naina, that blanket bag idea is really innovative.
Being in a hostel,I keep all my shoes in a small travelling bag and push it below my bag .That saves a lot of space for me

  8. thats a nice informative post naina…!! gud one…!! :waytogo: :waytogo: :waytogo:
all thz posts make me realise how bad i am at organising n maintaining my cupboard/shoe rachs/drawers/dresser etc etc

  9. loved that dropped down shoe rack. i loved ur shoe rack too.
wanted to bob off all ur sandals . too pretty they are
by the way I tooo keep blanket bags for organising my things. i bought a bed for my baby recently. so I got a bag like this. i think everyone must be aware abut it. but u can use saree bags also for storage .
I keep my unwanted lotions and other stuffs in these transparent bags and seal them..

  10. I have that shoe thing to hang behind the door..not like the one you have shown..is wider and kind of flatter..but you know somehow it’s not the same as keeping them in boxes or in a proper shoe rack. I have a shoe rack too..but it’s shared space with my hubby…and seriously…what’s with guy feet sizes…a pair of shoes occupies as much space as China!!!!

  11. nice article Naina
    waise a much needed one
i so wish to have a shoe closet….i have one shoe rack….but its small……..

  12. Very nice post Naina.:)..will make my husb read it…cos he just keeps his shoes in the drawer without cleaning n all of that and he thinks that i m too particular n all when i wipe my shoes with wet wipes before storing them back…

Ive seen these travel bags for shoes at Amarsons..they are so kewl…they are like mini versions of the blanket bag….u can store shoes in them in ur closet-drawer etc and also put them straight away in ur bag when ur travelling….Im gonna get those this week πŸ™‚

  13. ha ha naina i adoreeeeeeeeeee the start.hoes matter hence we should own a lot period.ha ha ah
