How to Switch up Your Skincare Routine for Cold Weather

I stay in Southern India where there’s no sign of winter. But over the few years, I have noticed that my skin starts drying up even when there’s no official winter during the colder months. The wind in the air dries up my skin and my hair and I’ve to up my moisturising game. That’s when I started to realise that I’ve to change my skin care routine. I started to apply coconut oil on my skin to keep it moisturised. Now that I’m back home (Assam) with actual winters, I have to follow a proper routine so that my skin stays nourished throughout the day. This is the reason why you need to change your skin regime with the change in the weather.


Change the moisturiser


During summer weather, we prefer a light moisturiser which can lock the moisture in and at the same time not feel heavy and oily on the skin. During winters, the same moisturiser is not enough. Even the same moisturiser throughout the day during the winters is not enough; you need to have a separate moisturiser during the day and during the night. The skin stretches out at night and gets even drier than the day. The most preferred type of creams for normal skin are the Vitamin E creams, for example from Aroma Magic and TBS.

Change your cleansing routine

During the summer months, gel and foaming cleansers are great for deep cleaning morning and night; however, these may be a bit drying once the temperatures cool down and less oil is being produced. A good rule of thumb is to use a non-drying, sulfate-free gel cleanser in the morning and a lightweight, lotion-based cleanser at night. The gel will offer a deep pore cleansing while a cleansing lotion, which is a bit milder, can do a more effective job of dissolving makeup on the face and within the pores.



Toners are often an overlooked step in a skin-care regimen. If you aren’t already using one, now’s the time to start. Toners that are alcohol-free are a perfect way to give your skin the water and hydration it so desperately needs in the fall when the temperatures are cooler. Skin cells are like fish and need water to live. Wipe an alcohol-free toner over the skin after cleansing and immediately apply a serum or a moisturizer while the skin is still damp to seal in the hydration and active ingredients.

This may come as surprise, but fall/winter are the seasons where a tremendous amount of UV damage is incurred. We often think that when the temperatures are cooler outside, the sun isn’t as harmful, but this is false. While the UVB rays (the ones responsible for causing suntans or sunburns) are not as strong in autumn, the UVA rays (the ones that cause skin cancer and premature wrinkles) are just as strong as they are in July and August. Protection is a year-round job, so be sure to apply a sunscreen formulated for your skin type to the face, neck, and any exposed chest area to shield from direct sunlight.



Because certain skin types can be prone to increased sensitivity in summertime from heat, chlorine, and the sun, exfoliation should be minimal. But come fall, exfoliation is imperative when it comes to repairing and brightening the complexion. For silky, smooth skin, a well-formulated facial scrub or an at-home exfoliating peel. Exfoliating is a must to remove the dead skin and the build up. It removes the dark spots, removes the dead skin and encourages the formation of new skin cells. It leaves you with fresh looking smooth skin.

Change the type of mask

Water-based gel masks are best for hydrating the skin, so they are beneficial for oily skin types where the goal is to add water to the skin, but not additional oil. Also, because of their naturally cold temperatures, they are also ideal for soothing redness in the sensitive skin, as well as soothing sunburns. During the fall, however, consider making the switch to a cream mask if you are feeling some dryness. These contain moisturizing oils that help to deeply hydrate and plump up normal to dry skin types.

Listen to your skin


You can follow a regime and it may not work for you. The trick is to listen to your skin. If something doesn’t feel right or your skin continues to feel dry, there’s something that needs to change. Try changing the routine or your diet. Always listen to your skin. Keep your skin and body hydrated and follow what suits your skin.
