How to Become Comfortable Wearing Bright Makeup

Being a young girl and being brought up in Kerala, I am not comfortable wearing bright makeup anywhere, even if it was a suitable place to wear bright makeup. If I decide to wear purple eye shadow to a relative’s house, someone will wash it off me with a steel wool and Lux liquid. After becoming a makeup lover, I really wanted to start wearing brighter makeup, so I started small and worked my way brighter. I found out that there are 2 restrictions keeping people from wearing bright makeup in Indian community-Criticizing by family/society OR fear of bright colors [thinking they will make you look trashy etc.]

So for the people afraid about the criticizing:

The first thing I noticed was that, it is all about the situation and function. If you are going out with your friends to the movies, you can easily sport hot pink lips or if you are going to the mall. But to tell you the truth I am one of those judgmental girls-when I see a young girl wearing bold red lips at a family function, I would think and even tell my cousin sister that, that girl is trying too hard. If you are attending a wedding, or family function where there will be a lot of your family [especially where your dada, dadi, nana, nani etc. are present] you should never attempt to wear such “in your face” makeup. Mine is an orthodox Muslim family so my basic family function makeup is: flawless skin with foundation and concealer, a light pink blush, some eyeliner and clear or light pink gloss.
Now for those who are afraid of color, here are some tips that helped me get over my chromophobia [fear of bright colors :D]

  • The first look I tried was colored liner.
Coloured eye liner
Coloured eye liner

It is “IN” but it is not “In your face” loud makeup. Begin by changing your normal black liner to dark blue, or brown, then to a darker greens and purples and slowly into jewel colors. And always remember to keep your shadows to the minimum when sporting this look. It is all about the liner.

  • Next thing you could try is wearing less pigmented shades of bright colors. Especially if you are a beginner, purchase cheaper eye shadows that are less pigmented and use it to give a light wash of color all over the lid. You can build the intensity of the color as you get comfy with it. I suggest trying shades of pink, gold, bronze, peach etc.
  • In case of wearing lip colors, If you are no or nude lipstick person, begin by using a lightly tinted lip balm like Nivea lip balm in strawberry. That will give your lips a slight tinge of color.

Next would be to try gloss sans shimmer.try lighter shades of gloss that is, colors close to your lips color. Then you can start experimenting with different shades. One thing I have learned is that in case of lip color, matte and frosty texture usually seems over the top. But satin finish and glosses seem more normal.

  • And never forget the key rule to wearing bright makeup-play up only one feature of your face. If you go for bright eyes, keep lips nude. If you wear bright lips, keep your eyes matte and neutral. If you want to play up your cheeks, keep your eyes and lips light. You don’t want to go out of your house looking like this:

  • Last but not the least; keep tabs on latest bright makeup trends. Someone who always gets colored liners and any bright makeup trends spot on is Rihanna. I like keeping tabs on her public appearances to see latest bright makeup trends. Another thing I like is that she has skin tone similar to us Indians, so it is easy to adapt her looks. I save every picture of her I can find, here are some of my favorite of her colorful and non-colorful looks[which would be great for those function where you can’t do bright makeup]

  2. Hey Fathima…
This is one great post. I’m an almost no make-up person, mainly because I’m not spunky enough to just start off all of a sudden.. But this is a great way to build the necessary confidence.. 🙂 Thanks a ton.

Welcome To IMBB….looking forward to seeing u around..:D

  3. Hey Pathu….I do know what you mean………………I was not allowed to wear lipstick for a long long time …….no shiny lips either…………………no danglers except that typical mallu gold umbrella one….so many restrictions and you are right about the bold colours……………………………either we will sit and criticise or too get conscious wearing the colours ourselves…………… 😀

  4. and about the Rihanna pics….except the fact that she silently put up with the violence and beating  :sidefrown:  crap, I admire her……………

    1. the critizing habit is more for mallus…its in our blood…no gloss??how did u survive??? and by danglers u mean..jimikki???
i kno wat u mean…but she is really talented too..i love take a bow….and Mr DJ..

  5. Fathima, nice post :rose: :rose: :rose: ,

am a mallu, but a fraud mallu, (born and brgt up in middle east)

whenever i come down to india for a vacation my cousins used to stare at me like i was some kinda freakin alien :alien: …………….

now am settled here, still my cousins feel that am too far modern (according to them, :silly: )

    1. oh another fraud mallu??? am i the only asli mallu here??Jomol,rads,Poorni..all are fraudddddd mallusss….and as i said..,mallus have a tendancy to be rather judgemental…let them be..my cousin sister is the same…she critizised me for wearing jeans 2 years ago[when i was 12] and now everyone is wearing it..she is wearing too.. really wanted to say something to her face when i saw her wearing it ..but i repressed the temptation….and BTW…do u live in kerala now???

  6. Fabulous and super useful post Fathima…I love Rihanna’s makeup. Except the fact that he foundation colour keeps changing, her makeup is always crisp and sharp…

      :-* :-*

    1. thanks rati! :-* :-* :-* ..i know…in d video for take a bow..i think they were trying to make her white…. :razzmad: :razzmad: i hate it when they do that…i also saw an ad where they whitened Beyonce…she looks so much better in her dusky avatar….

  7. Your advice on bright colors is spot on girl         After years of sticking to black eyeliners and lots of nudey corals and finally beginning to experiment with bright colors and it feels good 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

Also I don’t like frosty lipglosses – they look really strange on dusky skin sometimes – esp if its a silvery shimmer. But I do like Matte lipsticks – but they have a tendency to work better on someone who is maybe in their mid twenties and older, they look yuck on younger girls.

Great article – adore the Rihanna looks !!! Wanna get me some of those very sexy colored lippies ….

  8. Nice 🙂 im comfy using bold n bright colors on the eyes but never on the lips n nails 🙁

ive tried like reds fuschias etc…but i always end up removing the lipstick/eyeliner 🙁

    1. *** just realised i made a mistake while commenting….

      i meant *lipstick/nail polish

guess i was kinda    this morning…

  9. I love to experiment with makeup..although I have to be prepared to accept taunts and jeers if they turn disastrous..but one thing I follow strictly-not to use bright colors on both eyes n lips..and another sin-to use a brighter shade of foundation than my skin tone..chanting these two mantras can help carry almost all sorts of colors..and bring accolades from every corner  :-))

  10. i like the thought of young women wearing bright lipstick. by young, i don’t mean girls in their teens. somehow that never works out well. but i know women who are well in the twenties who don’t like to experiment with colour. i would always give two thumbs up to any woman who carries off bright lipstick.

  11. fabulous post fathima.. i’m pretty shy about bright colours too.. mostly a kajal / mascara n gloss person.. i really need to try out eye make up.. i’m getting married soon!! need to pull up my socks!!

  12. Fathima, herez th same situatn .. Mallu, orthodox muslim family.. Juz luv to do make up.. Vl xperiment in hom nd wash it off wen go outside..
Now am too happy to find dis article..itz too helpfull…gonna giv a try…step by step.. 🙂 🙂 🙂
