Huda Beauty Liquid Matte Trophy Wife Lipstick Review

Hey lovely ladies,

I’m back today with a new liquid lipstick – a new formula – much raved on the blogosphere. I have been wanting to review it for some time now but had been really caught up with things. Ganpati celebrations in Mumbai resulted in a long holiday for kids – needless to say, no work can be done with maniacs around 😛

My Experience with Huda Beauty Liquid Matte Trophy Wife Lipstick:

Packaging:  The packaging is quite eye catching – refer. The lip gloss like tube is square cut, meaning, it’s cuboid in shape and has a doe-foot applicator. This is not the novelty element. Novelty is the external cardboard packaging which is about 4-5 times the size of the actual tube. You can see the tube through the transparent enclosure of the cardboard box, but no, not very practical for storage. To store, you would want to discard the exterior cardboard.

Apart from being busy with Ganpati celebrations and vacation, there was another reason that this review didn’t come to you earlier. Honestly, with this product, the reputation preceded the product. I generally don’t let myself be overwhelmed by the hype around a product, but I really did get caught up with the hype around these lipsticks. The whole social media network was abuzz with the launch info followed by all the glam shots all over the place of Huda Kattan’s lip swatches and everybody seemed to be raving about them. Insta sellers everywhere seemed to be pushing this almost as much as the Kylie Lip kits. The fact that most of the shades were constantly sold-out on the sites of the retailers helped build the hype. So, when I got this, I was super excited and the first time I tried it, I just hated it! I couldn’t understand. So, I tried it again after a day…and again….and again…and again, but I couldn’t come to writing the review. I kept telling myself, I really should try it one more time. I must have finished half the tube in the attempt to form an opinion. Finally, it dawned on me, it wasn’t that I couldn’t form an opinion about the product. It was just that my pre-conceived notion about the product was at stark variance with my experience and they both weren’t meshing. And so, I kept trying it again and again, hoping it would leave up to the hype. However, nope, this didn’t suddenly become my favorite lipstick formula. Nope! Now that I have the basic out of the way, let’s talk about the details of the product:

The first thing which turned me off about the product was the sick asinine sweet fragrance. It was so ugggh! And it wouldn’t die off. It kept on lingering. Hated that!

Color: The shade “Trophy Wife” is described as “rose wood.” I picked this shade because the online swatches made the color seem like a deeper version of Kat Von D’s Everlasting Liquid shade in “Mother,” which I really like. However, this shade is actually more like a dirty pink, so rosewood is a fair description. The shade is quite nice and easy to carry off with a variety of looks. Do note that like the Colourpop, the color changes to a darker tone within the first 20 minutes of application. So, while applying, the colour seems quite similar to my natural lips colour; however, within about 15-20 minutes, it does intensify to about two shades darker, to the color that you see in the original lipstick, this one too seemed to go a shade or two darker with pics. The Company does state that the colour will intensify post application.

Texture:  The texture of this one is quite interesting – it’s quite thin and very lightweight. If it wasn’t a tad bit drying, it may have felt like you had nothing on. However, the slightly drying texture of the product does accentuate the fine lines on your lips. I noticed this especially when I tried using a highlighter on it and my lips looked prunish. On its own (without the highlighter), it was still livable. However, it is definitely on the drier side and does not live up to the Company’s claim of it being hydrating. The good thing is that it doesn’t bleed. Also, it dries down fairly fast. There is no stickiness to this.

Pigmentation: Pigmentation is extremely good!!! It goes on evenly, does not apply streaky nor does the colour sink into the fine lines of the lips. If you use a bit too much product, there are chances of transference – of the excess product. However, if you stick to using a very thin layer, you still get “bam” pigmentation, but with quicker dry time and no transference.

Staying Power:  Here is the other issue with the product, it doesn’t stick around much. I tried it without any lip liner and I also tried it with a lip liner; however, this one was not willing to stay put for too long. With 4-5 hours, it disappears from more than half of my lower lip – even with minimal eating/drinking. And normally for me, any lipstick would stay put on my upper lip, even when it has broken down on the lower one. However, with this one, it cuts through half my upper lip too, just disappears! Also, there is no staining, which can be a good or bad thing depending on your personal preference. I quite love a stain. But this one will just leave you and go!

Pros of Huda Beauty Liquid Matte Trophy Wife Lipstick:

  • A beautiful pink shade, very easy to carry.
  • Lightweight texture.
  • Good pigmentation!!!
  • Fairly easy to apply with the applicator, you have to be a bit extra careful as the formula is quite thin.
  • It applies smoothly and evenly.
  • No feathering or bleeding.
  • Eye-catching packaging.
  • Easy to identify colour from the tube itself.
  • Transfer proof!

Cons of Huda Beauty Liquid Matte Trophy Wife Lipstick:

  • Very off-putting sickly sweet fragrance.
  • Can be a bit drying over time.
  • Breaks down extremely easily and just disappears.

IMBB Rating:
A 3/5 product.

Bottomline – it’s not a BAD product, it’s more like an average product. So, if it is average, why don’t I like it?

A couple of things:

1. I feel it doesn’t live up to the hype created around it by the “beauty influencers.” I guess when the owner is a Beauty Influencer, they do know how to work that aspect. As a customer, I felt let down. I wish the formula was as good as the packaging!
2. The fragrance is really off-putting for me. And trust me, I’m not sensitive to fragrance. But this one, just gets to me.
3. At that price point, you really have much better products available in the market.
4. If I have to look at re-application in 4 hours, why would I bother with a liquid lipstick. When applying a liquid lipstick – one has to be extra careful, it takes more time to ensure an even and clean application. If I have to do re-application after short intervals – I’d rather go with something in a bullet.

The product does seem to have a number of takers, so I guess, there are people who like it. I guess its just “different strokes for different strokes”! I personally will not recommend it or buy more shades.

  1. Nice and honest review, Kulpreet! The shade is beautiful and it looks stunning on you. I agree, at the price these lip colors are placed, I would any day pick up an Anastasia Beverly Hills or a Kat Von D over this one.
PS: I love Kat Von D and all your reviews of the same :), I finally bought Lolita 2 after reading your review.

    1. Thanks so much Shweta! I hope you enjoy Lolita 2. If the formula agrees with you – do check out Double Dare and Mother. Neha reviewed these 2. I personally love these 2 shades and have bought back ups – they are just so flattering on our skintone.

    1. You have the advantage Neha – you can go to the store and try these before you buy them. Do give it a shot – atleas in the store. Would love to have your take on it.

  2. Nice review as always KK!! Shade and the texture looks amzing. Apart from lippie I couldnt help but notice, your face is glowing now. what skincare/makeup causing this ? 🙂

    1. Thanks Kusum! Yes, my skin is improving with time – I’ve upped my skincare routine. Will be sharing loads of skincare reviews soon. As soon as my laptop issues get sorted. Its mostly chemical exfoliation. Kiehl’s Micro peel Concentrate is also part of this story – i reviewed it a few days back – do check that out.

  3. My insta feed is all about this lipstick hype… Thankfully someone is there to kill that hype. even I was dying to try these… but not anymore.. 🙂
Most of products are just marketed like that and they fail to impress.

    1. I’m sorry to “kill the hype” but I’m getting so through with all the drama around each of the new products being dished out by the “influencers”. All the products are “the best thing ever”!! And we all get caught up in the hype!

  4. you look grrrgeous here ,K. your makeup is looking so fresh and you are totally owning that look. 🙂 Sad it did not live up to the hype… Was really not expecting this review ! good one as always 🙂

    1. Thanks Rati! Imagine how bummed i was to realise that this wasn’t close to the hype created around it! I think i used up half my tube trying to give it another chance and another chance and…
