Indian Model Turned Actresses

Indian model turned actresses

While watching Love Aajkal, I noticed how poor of an actress is Deepika Padukone. She looks great at times but she cannot act at all (the scene where she is apologising to Rahul Khanna :O). Anyways that made me think of all the actresses who had a successful modelling career before they left it for movies. Here is my compilation of models who did not enter the movie business through pageants or through family connections. But have they succeeded as actresses? You decide:

Frieda pinto

Before Slumdog Millionaire, Frieda Pinto hosted a travel show Full Circle on Zee International Asia Pacific for two years. And for four years before that Pinto was a budding model. She walked the ramp for India’s biggest designers and appeared on the covers of the biggest magazines. She was also seen in commercials for Wrigley’s Chewing Gum, Škoda, Vodafone India, Airtel, and DeBeers. She was doing pretty well as a model but her heart was set on acting. After six months of auditioning for various big banners of bollywood, Pinto auditioned for Danny Boyle’s SM and was finally selected.

Bipasha Basu

Bipasha’s modelling career started when she was very young. She did modelling and ramp shows part time while studying in Kolkata. When she was 17, she met model Meher Jessia at a function in Kolkata who suggested that Basu takes part in the Godrej Cinthol Supermodel contest. Basu participated and eventually won the title. She became a supermodel overnight. She was flown to New York by Ford Company where she became the face of success at the age of 17. She later went on to win Ford Models contest- Supermodel of the World in 1996.

Anushka Sharma

Anushka Sharma is the newest model to join bollywood. She has said on couple of occasions that she wished to make it big in the modelling world but had no aspirations for cinema. She began her modelling career at Lakme Fashion Week for Wendell Rodrick’s Les Vamps Show. She was later picked as Rodrick’s Finale model for his Spring Summer 2007 collection. Since then she was picked for shows of biggest Indian designers. She also appeared in commercials for Silk and Shine, Whisper, Nathella Jewelry and Fiat Palio.

Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone modelled for her college fashion society while studying. She was spotted in a ramp competition in NLS, Bangalore. She was soon spotted in many Indian brands such as Liril, Dabur Lal powder, Close up and Limca. She was also made the brand ambassador for ‘Jewels of India’ retail jewellery show and the international spokesperson for Maybelline. At the fifth annual Kingfisher awards she was awarded the title of ‘Model of the year’. Shortly afterwards she was chosen for Kingfisher Swimsuit Calendar 2006. She also won ‘Female Model of the Year – (Commercial Assignments)’ and ‘Fresh Face of the Year’ at the Idea Zee Fashion awards the same year. Later she was chosen as the brand ambassador of Kingfisher Airlines, Levis Strauss Signature and Tissot SA.
Her increasing visibility in the social circles of bollywood got her the music video for Himesh Reshamiya’s song ‘Naam Hai Tera.’ Then she was picked up for Om Shaanti Om and the rest is history.

Malaika Arora Khan

Malaika Arora Khan was selected as one of the MTV VJs when MTV India started its operations in India. She instantly became a hit after shows like Love Line and Style Check. She started modelling soon after that. She appeared in many commercial advertisements like Pearl Pet, Bare Necessities, Mafatlal, Benzer, Arena, Tanishq, Tribhuvandas Bhimji, De Beers and more. Soon she was picked up for cameos for song and item numbers in Bollywood films such as Chaiyya Chaiyya in the film Dil Se.
Later, she appeared in two pop music videos – Gud Naal Ishq Mitha sung by British Asian singer Bally Sagoo and Pyar Ke Geet sung by Shubha Mudgal. She started her acting career with the film Aaja Meri Jaan (1993). Since then she has acted and appeared in various Hindi films such as Bichhoo, Indian, Maa Tujhhe Salaam, Kaante, Kaal, Hey Babby, Om Shanti Om, Welcome, EMI.

  1. aashima i agree with u complety.and i adore all the above ladies u mentioned.especially bipasha.and man shes hot!lol! :pompom: :pompom: :pompom: :pompom:

  2. i still remember MTV VJs show malai- kha :woot: and saw to Malaika to eat malaai………from that time she was my fav :yahoo:

    1. she is my no. 1 item girl Aruna……….munni………..and i love her dressing sense and style in real life :balle:

      1. ok..she carriies off stuff no doubt but she was judging a reality show once and sorry but her dress sense in that was quite horrendous..i mean there is a very fine line between sensual and vulgarity and she crosses that line many a time..item girl perhaps 🙂 i defy preferred munni over sheila

  3. and yes i think deepika should refrain froma cting and just go aorund with her arm candy and hot body!
like seriously love aj kal :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: :yuck:

    1. hey but one of the pics put up of hers is quite lovely..very model-like..the 3rd pic.. else she is quite punju girl-next-door types..but she is very refreshing out of the new lot

    1. ya..though like i said after seeing that 3rd pic of hers i can quite imagine her as a model..maybe she has a chubby face and that needs to be covered at the sides :methinks:

  4. Malaika also endorses Chaini Khaini..chain se mazaa lo!! 😛 😛 he he he eh ehe….

And Sush,Aish, Lara, Priyanka were also models na? Or they just beauty pageant winners?

    1. :lol2: :lol2: ya she is so silly in that..also that streaks hair color ad..horrible reddish pink color..that other babe in the ad looks better

    2. Yes Cali there were also models. infact Aishwarya was quite a big name in modelling..but i deliberately kept the pageant winners out of this list. the list is about models who entered modelling for modelling only and left a successful modelling career for films.

    1. hehe he he..I burst out laughing every time I see Malaika dancing in that ad wearing some bright green dress!! 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆

  5. anushka is nice…though she needs to gain weight..n few ppl tellin her to lose wt for a movie 😐 😐
god knws ab wo dikhegi ya nahi… 😐

        1. Heee Heee I agree Ratidoo … that Anushka is skinny enough as it is !!! and I have no idea who would tell her to lose weight she has nothing to lose ! :O

  6. out of all of them only Anushka is truly model turned actress, coz the others just can’t act!…what about katrina? She too is a model turned actress, & is definately the worst of the lot.Our bad luck we have to watch her!

  7. I also like Anushka Sharma’s acting. She is very natural and approachable and I am sure with right movies, she will be a great actress. Others are just for show. They merely have songs here and there and can never carry a film on their shoulders. I like Bipasha, Deepika for their well maintained bodies and confidence, but to be a actress you need to be like a real person. Katrina is a joke in Hindi cinema….she just happened to be lucky…I like her looks, but thats it.

    1. j doooooooooooooo oye baleee!!! :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: i had some meeting today toh usme hi half day gone. 😐 😐 😐 😐 😐 😐

    1. oh!! frandzz. :(( bt whatever keeps you happy. :puchhi: I have bene good J do.. same but more busy. weeks come and go kuch pata hi nahin chalta. :(( not that i am not liking it but sometimes I feel i’d get old one day and realize oh! I have missed enjoying my life. Two people have joined iMBB office now so the work load has shifted but other responsibilities keep getting added. ?:)

you liking new job? they paying you good paisa? :manicure:

      1. Wow two people at the IMBB office – I swear Ratidoo if I was in Delhi I would have begged and bugged you to let me join IMBB… hee heee … I know what you mean about that level of busy ness.. thats why i switched jobs, just to give myself a break for a while, mujhe to din raat ka kuch pata nahin tha .. and esp with work like yours and mine, weekends tend to have little or no meaning so you just end up going on and on na ? I dont know about liking new job – its too soon to tell but its definitely different 😀

As for the money – its not ideal but its a step in the right direction 😉 😉 😉 😉 😉 😉 😉

        1. oh that sounds awesome J doo… one should always keep evolving. :))

btw check IMBB on mobile now.. sanjeev did something something. 😀

          1. I checked … Is better 😀 but is there any way to view an article in totality without having to press “more” after every segment ? but yeah this is a gazillion times better      donkeyji ki jai 😀

            1. oh! he says it would be possible bt you’d have to scroll down a lot.. he would be working on it. he says thankoo. :))

which phone model are you using?

                  1. On the homepage I could see the Header, the tabs and then the headline of each post, the article pic and the writer … then after clicking on an article headline , you get to the article page which is pretty much exactly like the one on a computer … except the comments come in one long flow instead of the threads and the emoticons dont show 😀 Thats about as accurate as I can get 😀

  10. katrina deepika and sonam :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: in acting

    bipasha

    1. We can see your smiley Pia.. unfortunately, since we have made IMBB mobile compatible now, the look would change in normal touchpad mobiles..the previous look was the ‘desktop look’ which you used to see.

  12. ohhh.. This is super tho.. Actual very mobile compatible 🙂

  14. cool compilation Aashima 😀
    Anushka acts better any day
rest all are only here for their bodies… 🙁 I wish I had a body like that!!!
u know what- I just came back from the gym and I just dont feel like cooking now.. khi khi khi

  15. I liked Anuska’s acting in band baja baraat!!! :yahoo:
but i do like deepika padukone’s style as well
but regarding malaika arora khan… though she always looks fabulous, but i believe she needs to change her dressing style… i mean i genuinely believe, she has got all the backless dresses on earth with her… she looks gorgeous in them, but now its kind of a bit boring
