How to Treat Ingrown ToeNails

How frequently do you get a pedicure done? Some people treat them as a total waste of money. While some prefer to get it done on a regular basis. As far as I am concerned I prefer to get it done once in a while.

Pedicures are great for maintaining or even improving our foot hygiene. They also help to prevent corns and calluses, keep cuticles in shape and most important of all prevents ingrown nails.

An ingrown toenail takes place when the corner of the nail grows down and into the skin of the toe. It is a very common and a painful condition affecting mainly the great toenail. Onychocryptosis is the medical term used for ingrown toenail. As the nail pushes on the skin the skin near the nail will look red and swollen. At times you may also notice pus and swelling near the affected area.

Causes of ingrown toenails:

• Shoes that do not fit properly exert the pressure on the nail to grow abnormally.
• Improper trimming of toenails
• Fungal infections
• Acute injury near the nail
• Poor foot hygiene
• Arthritis
• Excessive foot sweating
• Heredity factors
• Obesity
• Soft nail tissues especially on the side
• Picking or tearing the corners of the nails

Treatments and Preventions:

• Always trim or cut your nails properly. Nails should be cut straight across. Also, avoid to trim your nails too short.
• Soak your feet in warm water for at least 15 to 20 minutes. You may add 1 tsp of salt if you like. Repeat this procedure 4 to 5 times in a day.
• Add some drops of tea tree oil in petroleum jelly. Apply it on the affected area. Wrap your nail with a bandage and leave it overnight. It is very effective remedy in case you have thick nails.
• Few drops of lavender oil can be added to the foot soak. Lavender oil has antiseptic properties, which will help with the healing process.
• Sometimes a minor surgery, called ablation, is required to remove the part of the nail that is ingrown.
• Never try to remove an ingrown toenail by yourself at home. You may make the condition worse.
• Always wear shoes that fit properly. If possible try to wear sandals until the condition clears up.
• Try to keep your feet dry.
• If possible use clippers that are designed to cut toenails.

It is very important to get your pedicures and manicures done from a good place. Unhygienic condition may lead to bacterial infections in the nails.

  2. Hey Era
    That’s a pretty useful article.
We tend to ignore our toenails, but ingrown toe nails are extremely painful.
I say this because I have suffered & lack of care left me with no choice but a surgery!
So yes girls…do keep all the above tips in mind !!

  3. This is a very informative post. Just to add up an ingrown toenail infection or onychocryptosis is a common nail infection that often affects the outer edge of the big toe. However, it should be noted that the nail on any toe, or the nail on both sides of a toe, can become ingrown.

The most common signs and symptoms are pain, redness, and swelling at the corner of a toenail. During the early stages of the condition, you will notice that the end of the toe becomes reddened and painful with mild swelling. There is no pus or drainage and it feels warm to the touch. Later on, extra skin and tissue will grow around the nail’s sharp point and yellowish drainage will begin to develop.

Sometimes, people who have ingrown toenail infection may also develop toenail fungus. In this case, the swelling may get worse, and there may be white- or yellow-colored drainage from the area. It is also likely that the person will have fever, although this is not usual. In such event, the toenail fungus should be addressed immediately. Application of otc medications like ZeroFungus cream can greatly help in preventing the fungi from further infecting the nails. It would also be wise to see a doctor immediately in order to properly address the issue of ingrown toenail infection.
