Is it safe to use Expired Makeup Products? Ask IMBB

Ask IMBB Gang

Shilpa Asks:

I do have loads of makeup & beauty products which I am sure would expire before I finish even half of ‘em.. But I have noticed in my already expired products that I dun get any altered look/bad smell…or even no diff sensation even when I have accidentally used ‘em. Probably because of colder climate than India..?! Am not sure.. My Q is is it safe to use such products which look+smell+feel normal but xpired..?!

  1. 1.Its ok to use expired products AS LONG AS NO OTHER ALTERATION IS NOTICABLE IN PRODUCT.
2.if it start smelling funny, stings your skin / eyes(even the newly manufactured products stings !!!)
IT IS BETTER TO TOSS IT IN BIN WITHOUT ANY SECOND THOUGHT.!!

Jus be careful and listen to what ur skin respond to the product.!

It is merely the tactics of companyies to force customer to buy regularly.

As v are not ingesting the cosmetics,IT IS SAFE TO USE..
    GUD LUCK

  2. NO!! NEVER :nonono: :nonono: :nonono: the expiry date is just a rough indicator about when the chemical degradation reaches the harmful stage…. is doest mean that the product is beyond use THAT VERY DAY.. it just means that every day after that you are taking a HUGE risk of harming yourself. 9 out of 10 times maybe nothing noticeable will happen but the one time it does, you will have no one 2 blame but yourself!!! and the damage may be temporary to permanent!!!sorry far the lecture .. no amount of money is worth your health!! i see 2-3 patients every month with rashes or discolouration of even swelling and ulceration because of using expired/ low quality lipstick of other products!!! :-/ :-/

  3. never ever…!!! nothing is more important than your skin…why take a risk….?? you might end up spending more to undo the harm caused by expired products…

  4. i would also say never… i keep discarding my products every now and then. it pains to throw away unused products but honestly, I am love my skin more than the products.

  5. Better not to but if you have a lot of makeup it doesn’t make sense to just throw everything away in a year or two. As a rule, DO ditch all kajals, mascaras after they expire…actually mascaras in a few months when the smell changes. Eyeshadows, eyeliners (that you don’t use on the inner rims of the eye) can be used for much longer if you store them well. Also, clean the tips of the eyeliners after every use especially if you have watery eyes. Ditch lip glosses when they start to separate. Lipsticks can be used for quite a few years if you store them in the fridge and clean the tips after every use…though, it would be better to ditch very watery/moisturising ones sooner than later. Most other powder items can be used for long. Be alert and watch out for any signs of fungus, change in odour, separation in the products and you should be fine.

    1. i clean the tips of my lipsticks , eyeliners and lip liners after every use and they stay in pretty good condition. actually it also feels good to use clean stuff all the time.

      1. i throw away my mascara after every 3 months..i read somewhere that that’s the max they should be kept…is that right? it’s difficult to tell with some mascara bottle that are opaque

        1. It depends on the brand. I had an avon mascara that expired in just 3 months or so. But the maybelline colossal ones last for at least 4-6 months. I guess throwing your mascara away in 3 months is fine but if you can make out the change in smell of your mascara then you can keep it till it starts to smell different or rancid 🙂

  6. Oh, and it’s better to throw away foundations especially cream ones after they expire. It’s better not to risk skin problems on your face…
    Hope this helps 🙂

  7. i have a simple funda about my products….all oil based and liquid ones need to go to the bin after expiry…or even before that…for example mascara after 3 months…

but powder products…such as my loved loved loved pigments….they are safe for a long long time if i keep them well.
also i have loads of eye pencils…i sharpen them often…clean the tip…only use on me….so…till i don’t feel any harm on my eyes…i don’t feel it necessary to bin them!! 🙂

  8. o ya…and mone more thing….most of the packed products including food items and cosmetics of course….have a shelf life much longer than the expiry put on them….infact medicines too…

ultimately it depends much more on how you take care of your product cleanliness than just a date on the product.

    :haanji: :haanji:

    1. Thats sumthing I din’t knw at all @ longer shelf life than xpiry date..!! Must be sum Factor of Safety.. :methinks: Thanx for the info

I have always wondered @ the generalness of xpiry date of any food/beauty/medical product for the entire country..!! Ingredients surely react differently to different climates of different places naa..!! Temperature+Humidity of Srinagar is apparently diff than that of Jaipur..so how can a mascara xpire at same xpiry date at both the places.. :methinks:

  9. A lot of cosmetics and make-up do not have expiry dates. It’s safe to use them as long as you don’t see any changes in their composition. But as soon as a change appears, it belongs in trash.

For the products which do have expiry dates, I’d never use them after the expiry date. Products which come in direct contact with the skin such as foundation are an ABSOLUTE NO.

  10. No. NEVER.. :nono: I clean up my makeup collections once in a while. When i notice an expired product, even if i have not opened it or used it, it goes straight to the bin. :haanji: one advise: never compromise on the expiry date issue. the cosmetic product is already loaded with chemicals right? so y take risk. :haanji:

  11. i think No.. u can just try expired ones(and expnsve too) for other purposes.. like bronzers for legs after some protecting lotions…. (and that too if u r nt supr snstve) O:)

bt how to clean lipsticks and liquid eyeliners regularly??????? i mean i do clean n cndition my brushes all d time.. bt wanna knw abt odr thngs as well..

  12. A Big ThanQ to all lovelies for paying attention to my Q & replying with their respective perspectives… :puchhi:

With this mixed bag of replies..am yet to get sorted out :chewnails: Lemme again read ’em carefully to weigh their pros & cons :specs: And thanQ again for sharing your views backed by reasons for that.. :teddy:

  13. hey great question becos after all the hoo haa i did abt olay yday i had to buy an Olay cleanser today becos mine was getting over and when i opened the tube it was really watery (compared to the thicker consistency it usually has). I used it anyways and nothing has happened so far (i used it abt 2 hrs ago). there was no expiry date either..so am wondering if i shud hold onto it or buy another. what is your advice?

    1. It happened with me too..Two of my *New* Fair & Lovely Anti-blemish cream tubes went to trash even when they had 6 months left for their xpiry dates.. :haanji: Coz when I squeezed ’em out..contents were totally separated into coloured water & solid mass.. So dint dare to try even once & threw a not-so-happy-farewell-party for both of ’em.. :zombiekiller:

      1. ah ok…then i think i shall throw them out..i will try and be sneaky the next time and see if i can open the tube in the store before i buy it
