I am obsessed with Kat Von D’s makeup line at Sephora. She is truly a very talented woman and her products have impressed me time and again with their superior quality. A while back, I bought and reviewed the Kat Von D Shade + Light Eye Contour palette and had bought this corresponding brush along with it. Read on to find if this Kat Von D Shade and Light Eye Contour Brush impressed me as much as the eye shadow palette.
A two-in-one eye shadow brush specially designed by Kat Von D for eye contouring, with a tapered end for defining and a domed end for blending.
What it does:
This unique, dual-ended eye shadow brush is designed just for eye contouring—a groundbreaking technique once used only by makeup pros to define and enhance eyes. The tapered Shade end is uniquely shaped to precisely sweep on shadow exactly where you want it, while the Light end blends and softens product without removing pigment—creating a natural-looking, contoured eye look. This brush’s ultra-soft synthetic bristles feature gradient white tips to expertly blend and disperse high-pigment shadows. Specially-designed by Kat Von D for use with the Shade + Light Eye Contour Palette, the brush includes a sleek, hard casket case to keep your brush protected at home or while on the go. This set contains: eye contour brush and brush case.
My Experience with Kat Von D Shade and Light Eye Contour Brush:
Packaging: Kat Von D products have the most amazing packaging, which mirrors the creator’s sense of style which is very dark and gothic. This eye brush comes in a sturdy plastic coffin case. I do find dual ended brushes difficult to store as they cannot be stored upright like every other brush, so the fact that this comes with its own case is highly appreciable.
Brush: The brush is dual ended and the bristles are synthetic and very soft. The “Shade” end is a small dome-shaped dense brush. This brush is very useful for precise placement of shadow in the crease and outer V. It does do a good job of diffusing out harsh edges of an eyeshadow, but it is not so good at blending due to its denseness and small size. You could still use it to blend, but it will not do a good job like an eye makeup brush like Sigma E25 which helps diffuse shadows for a softer gradient effect. This end of the brush will be perfect for those with small eyes. It does a fantastic job and is the perfect size for applying shadow on the brow bone and this brush can also be used to help smoke out your eyeliner or even blend eye shadow base or concealer. Due to its synthetic nature, it does not absorb any cream product, hence can also be used with cream eyeshadows.
The “Light” end of the brush is a pointed tapered tip. The point helps with precise application and smudging shadow on the lower lash line, inner corner and can even help smoke out eyeliner to give it a softer appearance instead of a harsh line. The small size helps in controlled blending unlike the shade end of the brush which blends over a larger area. This brush can also be used to apply concealer in “hard to reach areas” of the face and which are usually missed by your foundation brush – like around the side of your nose, to spot conceal etc.
This brush cleans very easily with an alcohol-based spot cleaner and washes easily with soap and water without any staining on the bristles. I have not noticed any shedding.
Overall, this brush is really good, but it is not a “does it all” brush. Even though it will cover the functions of many other brushes and can be used in many multi-purpose ways due to its dual-ended nature, you might still need to pull in a few extra brushes for your eye look, especially if you are on an advanced level. This brush cannot pack on eyeshadow on the lid and blend like fluffy brushes.
I also own the Kat Von D Shade + Light contour brush for the face which I was highly impressed with and consider it a must-have brush for everybody. Though I don’t feel as strongly about this brush, I still consider this to be a very practical and useful brush and your vanity will definitely benefit with the addition of this. Hence I will recommend it.
