Kate Somerville Quench Hydrating Face Serum Review

By Alaka S.

Hello friends,

In our quest for having beautiful skin, I think we all have tried different potions and lotions waiting to weave its magic and in one of these ventures, I discovered Kate Somerville.  In fact, I had been watching my daily dose of reality TV shows where one of the stars went to have her facial done with a noted Hollywood celebrity beauty expert named Kate Somerville. While in the TV show, the stars were raving about Kate, I was hooked and surfing the laptop, reading all about her and how she had developed her skin care line, which can make you look red carpet-ready. Now, how do you think I could resist from ordering few items from her skin care line 😛

About Kate Somerville Quench Hydrating Serum:

The serum comes in a bottle, which has a sleek metallic gray finish to it. The serum dispenser is very sturdy. Even though the entire bottle is opaque, the side panel has a small transparent column where you can see how much of the serum is still available for use. Good travel friendly bottle, which you can keep in your bag without thinking twice. The serum is transparent and fragrance free.  The Quench Serum comes in 2 styles – hydrating and oil-free. I picked up the hydrating one since I thought that it would benefit my dry skin more.

My Experience with Kate Somerville Quench Hydrating Face Serum:

I had already used Kate Somerville’s Total Vitamin serum earlier, which I had actually liked a lot. So, I was very excited to try the Quench serum from KS too.  There had been a lot of positive reviews about Quench serum, so I was sure I had picked up a winner.

When I took the serum in my hand, it felt a little viscous compared to how serums mostly are, but I owed it to the fact that it was the hydrating kind and not the oil free one.  For me what was more important was how the serum fared on my skin.  As soon as I applied the serum on my face, I felt something was not going right.  The serum which felt thick in my hand, now just sat on my face like an oily layer.  This was not the dewy kind of look that I was expecting as claimed by the product. The serum has lipids and retinol content but I did not assume it would result in the form of a greasy layer. I had to use a damp cloth to wipe off the excess. The only good point I observed was that I didn’t need to use any additional cream on the face with this serum.

I was not going to be disheartened with the first setback. So, I decided not to give up on this serum. I deduced that for most of the serums, I use 2-3 pumps of the serum on my face, as they get absorbed very fast.  However, for this product, I should use a very tiny amount of the KS quench hydrating serum and see how it fares, sadly no luck again! The serum refused to get absorbed into my skin.

Still not ready to take a no for an answer, I thought of trying it only in winter season when my skin is more parched than summers; still without any luck!

I thought I am not blending it correctly, so I tried spreading it out evenly…no luck again. The serum just sat there on my face like an oily layer; just like a cranky child refusing to budge.

Now, this serum sits on my closet and I look at it thinking what went wrong between me and the serum 😛 I am currently using this serum only during my night time skincare routine in winters. This serum has become more like a moisturizer than an anti-aging serum. After using this serum in the morning after I wake up, my skin feels moisturized but nothing which I feel raving about. Thankfully, it does not clog my pores either.

Pros of Kate Somerville Quench Hydrating Face Serum:

  • Can be used without requiring any face cream.
  • Only a small quantity is required, so can be used for longer duration.

Cons of Kate Somerville Quench Hydrating Face Serum:

  • Very viscous texture, which is not easily absorbed into the skin.
  • Instead of giving dewy look as claimed, it makes the skin greasier.
  • Even though it says hydrating, it did not benefit dry skin at all.
  • Not suitable for summers or day time use.
  • Difficult to blend or use with makeup.
  • Has silicones.
  • Did not provide any anti-aging benefits.
  • Not effective enough for the price charged.

IMBB Rating:

2/5, not at all happy with how the product fared on my skin.

Would I Repurchase Kate Somerville Quench Hydrating Face Serum?

No, I would not. I would rather prefer to try the oil-free KS Quench serum and I would recommend the same to you too. If you have used this serum, please let me know if you had had a different experience than mine.
